Damsel Trailer Released by Netflix

News, TV Movies

Millie Bobby Brown is Elodie, a young woman who must survive after becoming a sacrifice to repay a debt in Netflix’s Damsel.

Written by executive producer Dan Mazeau and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the movie finds Brown’s character as a “dutiful damsel” who “agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her” to be “thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon,” per its synopsis.

Elodie must utilize her wits and will to survive. Her determination is displayed in the trailer when she says, “I will escape. For every innocent woman whose life has been stolen.” Damsel premieres on Friday, March 8, on Netflix.

The streaming service confirmed the premiere date when sharing the trailer. “They messed with the wrong DAMSEL,” the post on X (formerly Twitter) read.

“She’s a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved. She saves herself in many ways. It subverts what you expect: You’re expecting the prince to turn around and save her, and… no. Don’t wait for the prince,” Brown, an executive producer of Damsel, told Netflix’s Tudum.

Robin Wright portrays Queen Isabelle, who spells out Elodie’s role by saying she joins “a long line of women who have helped to build this kingdom.” There’s a sacrifice in every generation in the name of protecting their people, dating back centuries.

It’s no wonder Angela Bassett’s Lady Bayford distrusts the royalty.

Damsel‘s cast includes Nick Robinson, Brooke Carter, Ray Winstone, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

The fantasy adventure film is an exciting undertaking for Damsel‘s director. “What I really loved in the script from Dan Mazeau was embracing the idea of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story, but taking it into a place [where] it’s completely upside down,” Fresnadillo told Netflix’s Tudum.

“It was a very intense journey that I was so excited to design and to develop. At the core, this is such a beautiful story about a young woman becoming a strong, independent, and empowered adult. Elodie doesn’t have any kind of support. It’s a real survival experience,” Fresnadillo added.

Joe Roth and Chris Castaldi produce, while Emily Wolfe co-produces. Robert Brown and Zack Roth executive produce Damsel. Sue Baden-Powell is a line producer on the Netflix movie.
