Will Trent Gets an Early Season 3 Renewal at ABC
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s best Special Agent will continue his pursuit of justice in a third season.
ABC renewed Will Trent for Season 3 after five episodes of its current sophomore season, according to Variety.
The crime drama returned with Will Trent Season 2, “Me Llamo Will Trent,” on Tuesday, February 20, at 8/7c, on ABC.
The premiere pulled “4.8 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day), up sharply from its freshman average to easily mark a series high. In three out of the four episodes since, the series has matched its demo high rating of 0.4, and its March 5 outing set a new audience high of more than 4.8 million viewers,” per TV Line.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling book series, Will Trent follows the titular character, portrayed by co-executive producer Ramón Rodríguez, after being abandoned at birth and enduring coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system.
As an adult, “Will uses his unique point of view in the pursuit of justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI,” per the show’s synopsis.
Will Trent‘s ensemble cast includes Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner, Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, and Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood.
The show’s renewal came only a day after Will Trent Season 2 Episode 5, “Capt. Duke Wagner’s Daughter,” aired on ABC. With this news, Will Trent joins three other ABC shows that received the same treatment during their current seasons.
The network renewed Abbott Elementary for Season 4, only two episodes into its third season in February. 9-1-1 received a Season 8 renewal earlier this week after the first three episodes of Season 7. Its renewal marks 9-1-1’s second season on ABC since its move from FOX after Season 6.
ABC then renewed Grey’s Anatomy, the longest-running primetime medical drama, for Season 21 after only three episodes of its 20th season.
Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen developed Will Trent. They executive produce the series alongside Karin Slaughter and Oly Obst.
