Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 9 Review: I Carry Your Heart

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

We all knew that couldn’t end well, right?

On Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 9, “I Carry Your Heart,” Catherine gets close enough to finding out about Meredith and Amelia’s research that Teddy decides to come clean. That plan, unfortunately, backfires.

It’s all a game of chicken with some really bad timing that brings out some of Meredith Grey’s worst qualities.

After Amelia finds Catherine in her lab, she panics and takes the bulk of her research to Boston to leave with Meredith. They’re close to getting the data they need, but they still need more time.

Teddy rushes them over the phone, saying Catherine is going to figure this out soon, so they enlist Blue and Jules to help with data entry to speed up their process.

Meredith and Amelia have two different ideas of what will happen next, though. Meredith wants to publish an abstract, continuing to go behind Catherine’s back, while Amelia thinks they should present a strong case to Catherine to stay on her good side.

Both of them have good points. Curing Alzheimer’s is monumental, and they’ve done a heck of a lot of work to get to this point. On the other hand, Amelia still works for a hospital that’s largely funded by Catherine and her foundation, and she’s also doing other research that Catherine is funding.

Amelia, ultimately, has more to lose than Meredith, at least as far as her career is concerned.

Amelia is also wary of erasing Derek. Meredith and Amelia’s research would mean that much of Derek’s research would now be obsolete. Meredith’s response to this is logical but a little too cold.

It does reflect the long-standing dynamic between these two women when it comes to anything Derek-related, even from when he was still alive, which makes for consistent writing and is an interesting thread to continue in this type of setting.

Yet Meredith has become a bit too much of a flat character, likely because we only see her when it’s absolutely necessary these days.

That carries into her relationship with Nick, too, which is just the same old conflict repeated in different ways. If we’re going to see Meredith and Nick together on screen, it would be nice to see something different out of them for a change. It’s exhausting at this point.

Back to the research, though, Jules and Blue come through with the data just in time — it seems. Meredith and Amelia confirm what they need to confirm, but they don’t know what’s happening back in Seattle.

After revealing to Owen what she’s been doing with funding, Owen realizes it’s because of his going to Catherine over his project idea that she started looking into the budget in the first place. Owen suggests Teddy be honest with Catherine about what she had done — advice from a former chief to a current one — and she does just that.

It would have been too easy for Catherine to be understanding and let this slide. She reads almost as a villain at this point, which is frustrating because her character has become one-note as well.

Either way, the easy thing wouldn’t be interesting television, so as upsetting as it might be to see Teddy get fired, it was really the only thing that could happen.

Not only is Teddy caught in the crossfire because of helping Meredith and Amelia, but also because of something Owen had done. That can’t be good for them moving forward.

Maggie is also back on this episode, which brings about some closure for her and Winston. She’s there for a patient she’s worked with for years and who’s about to hear some bad news about his heart transplant.

Meanwhile, Monica and Winston have another cardio patient, and the stars align to allow both be saved with a domino transplant surgery. It’s the sort of risky, elaborate surgery involving several doctors that makes watching surgery fun on Grey’s Anatomy.

If anything, this entire storyline deserved a little more attention.

Not only is it an emotional one that results in two happy endings, one for a teen and one for a very much in love couple, but it also becomes a way for Lucas to shine right when he needs to.

At the beginning of the episode, he is told that the council recommends that he repeat his intern year because of everything that happened with Sam Sutton.

The poor guy can’t seem to catch a break at Grey-Sloan, but Maggie sees potential in him when they work together at the hospital and offers him a special resident position in Chicago.

He says he also figured he’d do neuro — he’s a Shepherd, after all, right? — and Maggie suggests that cardio is pretty great, too.

This is also just on the heels of Lucas and Simone reconciling, but it’s a good offer for Lucas, especially right now.

Speaking of romance, there are several highlights in that department from this episode, some good, some tragic, some surprising:

  • We learn that Jo and Link are insufferable when they work together, especially with Jo as an OBGYN resident and Link as her superior. It’s an entirely different dynamic, and Mika feels awkward when she’s caught in between.
  • Mika seeing that dynamic, though, forces her to break things off with Taryn. She says it just can’t work because their feelings aren’t strong enough for either of them to put the relationship over their careers.
  • Jules and Blue are one of the more fun will-they/won’t-they couples right now, perhaps because of the honesty. Jules easily admits to having a crush on Blue, but swears it will go away. Yet they fall right into bed together, and more importantly, they really seem to understand each other.
  • Winston and Monica! You almost see this one coming, but not entirely. Now, just imagine how complicated it’s going to be when Amelia finds out.
