Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Episode 1, "Gold Star" -- Joe Mantegna as David Rossi and Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Homesick

Criminal Minds, Reviews

It becomes more and more obvious with each passing episode that Voit is playing the long game. On Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Episode 3, “Homesick,” he is still controlling the team’s feelings even though we don’t see him.

The episode opens our eyes to different secrets being kept within the FBI and among the BAU members. These secrets will play in Voit’s favor; they are how he can control them.

Sadly, it might be these secrets that bring Emily Prentiss down.

Luckily, it doesn’t take long for us to find out what Voit told Luke on Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 2, “Contagion.” But even though we find out the truth, we also discover Emily knew the secret and hadn’t told the team.

Like Luke, the viewers are upset that Emily knows something terrible is happening behind the BAU’s back but doesn’t share it with them. We can understand she has been trying to protect them, but at what cost?

Things take a turn when we find out JJ also knows about the BAU-gate. However, Luke still does not tell her the complete truth. He asks her if she’d like to know if it was something dangerous, which makes us understand the secret goes deeper than the website and is actually about JJ.

As important as it is for JJ to know the truth, it is also true that Voit is trying to control them by handling this information. Once again, Voit has the upper hand.

In the end, Luke does what any friend would do and tells JJ the truth. How will this affect her relationship with Emily?

Emily is keeping all the secrets this season. Not telling the team about the dark web site might cause them not to trust her moving forward.

However, her secret meetings with Brian might cost her more than her team’s trust.

It is obvious that someone inside the FBI is telling Brian details that no one should know. He claims they are sources and can’t reveal them, but is it someone we already know?

The fact that Rebecca is the one who puts Emily in contact with Brian makes us wonder if she is conspiring against the BAU. Is she the one to tell Brian that Emily’s boss made a deal with Voit?

Whoever Brian’s source is, they clearly are trying to get rid of Emily. The moment Brian calls her to meet at the garage again and Emily arrives to see him being beaten up by two other men, it is obvious that he is setting her up.

Can Emily get out of this situation? Or will she be held responsible for the attack?

It is definitely refreshing to watch the team work on another case. Even though it saddens us not to see the BAU work together like they used to, it is still important that the show doesn’t solely focus on Voit and Gold Star.

The best part about Rossi and Tara working on another case is that they are both distracted from Voit. Rossi doesn’t see him everywhere he goes and can focus on the case.

We only connect Rossi to Voit when he hears his voice after solving the case.

However, Luke and JJ are deeply invested in Voit’s case. This time, they must convince his wife and daughters to see him.

Obviously, things with the three women aren’t as expected, but it becomes clear that they are worse. Luke notices this immediately by watching the eldest daughter pull her hoodie sleeves down and have an attitude.

Once again, we go back to his question: wouldn’t you want to know if it was dangerous? That knowledge pushes Voit’s wife to agree to meet him. It’ll be interesting to see how that encounter goes.

Voit relies on secrets to bring the BAU down and turn the agents against one another. However, as JJ implies on Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Episode 3, “Homesick,” they are a family and can’t let him play with them.

Sadly, he has won the first round and will see his wife and daughters. Will this work in their favor and get them the information they need?

Hopefully, the team will be one step closer to finally catching Gold Star and getting rid of Voit for good.
