The Way Home Cast and Creatives Share Pond Secrets and Season 3 Tidbits | ATX Television Festival

We still have a ways to go before The Way Home Season 3 hits our screen, but the ATX Television Festival brought some of the cast and creatives together for a discussion of the show so far, with a couple of teases about Season 3.

In attendance at the panel were Chyler Leigh (Kat Landry), Sadie Laflamme-Snow (Alice Dhawan), Evan Williams (Elliot Augustine), Heather Conkie (Showrunner/Co-Creator/Executive-Producer), Alexandra Clark (Showrunner/Co-Creator/Executive-Producer), and Marly Reed (Co-Creator/Executive-Producer). The discussion was moderated by Emily Longeretta (Variety).

A wide range of topics were covered, so let’s dive into a few.

The Logistics of the Pond

We got a little bit of a peek behind the curtain when it comes to shooting with the pond, which Leigh said is “a real pond that gets real cold in Toronto.”

Prepping for those scenes takes “so much forethought and work to make sure that, you know, safety is number one,” Leigh shared, and so a shorthand was created on set.

“We should explain. PP-1 means just come out of the pond, Post Pond 1. Post Pond 2, you’re like still dripping, and Post Pond 3, you’re like damp, but Dell’s not going to be like, ‘Have you been swimming?.’” Laflamme-Snow shared. “I find myself half the time being like, ‘I’m sure we can play this as a PP-3, right.'”

Leigh said that when they can, the cast will “at least wear like a wetsuit top or something, but the only problem with that is you can be too buoyant, so trying to stay under the water, you’re really under there huffing and puffing.”

She went on to say that if fans go back and re-watch the show, they’ll notice a change in Kat and Alice’s wardrobe.

“We actually started to wear darker and darker clothes intentionally because it doesn’t read as much as it would be if we were in a light pair of pants or something, you gotta be soaking wet. There’s no way around that.”

“Alice’s ripped jeans went away really fast,” Laflamme-Snow joked.

Alice and Nick

One of the surprises of Season 2 was that Nick learned that the present-day Alice is the same Alice he fell in love with in the ’90s.

“It was really fun, I think, to give that sort of respect and love for that really formative relationship for both of them,” Laflamme-Snow said.

“It’s also fun to have someone in the show that gets to find out about time travel, believes it, and kind of has nothing to do with it. He’s not like, ‘oh when do I go in, and where is Jacob?’ He is along for the ride that we have all been on watching this show, so that was really exciting for me.”

Season 3 Teases

Fortunately, the panel didn’t end before we got some The Way Home Season 3 scoop.

First off, Season 3 will feature a time jump. “I can confirm that we have to do a time jump purely because of when shoot. You know we left them obviously in November of 2024, and we are going to be shooting in August. That’s just the nature of our show, we do have to jump,” Clarke said.

“But TBD on how much we do cheat things and pick up right where we left off, very similarly to how we started Season 2, and then jump,” she added.

When asked if we would learn more about or see Elliot’s mysterious ex-wife, Reed commented, “I think there’s a lot of Elliot’s story left to tell.”

Earlier in the panel, Williams was asked about Elliot’s journey during the show so far and had this to say:

“The arc of Elliot, I think has been moving from a man who was being everything he felt he had to be and maybe had no choice to becoming a man who is discovering what he wants to be and what he can aspire to be. And so, hopefully, we’re seeing Elliot become a fuller, taller man… That’s the kind of man that’s required to love a woman like Kat Landry.”

And one last little teaser, the creatives shared that we would learn about why there’s a sticker of Thomas’ last name (Coyle) on Colton’s guitar.
