Ghosts’ Danielle Pinnock Discusses Alberta’s Love Life and That Season 3 Cliffhanger [Interview]

ATX Television Festival, Ghosts, Interviews

Danielle Pinnock says she’d love to see a “modern-day loved interest” for Alberta on Ghosts.

Alberta’s a talented jazz singer from the 1920s whose ghost talent is that the livings can hear her when she hums — she can also communicate with Alexa. Season 3 saw her getting a short-lived romance with a visiting poltergeist.

I recently sat down with Danielle Pinnock during the ATX Television Festival to discuss some of Ghosts Season 3’s big moments, Alberta’s love life, and hear about what she’d love to see explored in future seasons.

When asked who she’d like to see Alberta have a romance with next, Pinnock shared she’d like to see a “modern-day love interest for Alberta.”

“I have this hope that a rapper from the ’80s shows up and that’s something great for Pete too because he would have been around during that time. And Asher [Grodman] would have listened to that music as the 90s ghost,” Pinnock said.

And, of course, we had to discuss Alberta’s potential feelings for Pete. While Pinnock doesn’t know what the future holds for those two, she hopes the show explores their dynamic further.

“I would love to see more about her relationship with Pete. We kinda saw a little bit of that sparkle in this season. And so who knows if they get into a full-blown relationship and if they’re even compatible.”

Pinnock believes that Alberta’s romantic tendencies may be the reason she hasn’t been sucked off yet, despite solving her own murder during Ghosts Season 2 Episode 21, “Whodunnit.”

“You know what, I think it really will be up to her giving a good guy a chance, an honest chance. And she loves bad boys, though bad boys are eventually kind of what got her killed in the first place. But I think maybe Pete unlocks that secret. I’m not sure. But I want to be on the show as long as I can. But when it’s our time, it’s our time. And it’s been an honor.”

During Ghosts Season 3, Alberta had a romance with poltergeist, Saul, played by Lamorne Morris.

“The thing that I thought was so charming and really special that Akilah [Green], our writer of that episode, wrote is that he [Saul] was the Negro Baseball League,” Pinnock said. “He’s on her level. She was a kind of famous jazz singer and he was a famous baseball player, and I’m like, of course, they would be falling for each other.”

Pinnock also loved working alongside Lamorne Morris, and she hopes he returns in Season 4.

“Lamorne is a master of the craft when it comes to comedy. And I just was so honored to be working alongside him and being able to play and all the nerves that Alberta felt when meeting someone new with all the nerves that I felt as an actor. I was like, ‘Oh, I just want to impress him, and I hope he thinks I’m good’.”

Ghosts Season 3 Episode 10, “Isaac’s Wedding,” delivered a couple shocking twists: Isaac and Nigel don’t get married and the return of Patience. I asked Pinnock how she thinks Alberta would’ve cheered Isaac up after breaking things off with Nigel — you know if Isaac didn’t get taken into the dirt.

“She’d probably just sing him a song and to be honest,” Pinnock said. “They would learn Heartbreak Hotel by Whitney Houston, and I can just see them putting on their own karaoke and drinking their fake whiskey and wine to get through it.”

“Alberta does give some great advice, but she’s pretty much a hot mess,” Pinnock added.

Pinnock is just as curious as we are about what Patience living in the dirt for all these years means for the show.

“The thing that I keep asking the showrunners is, in Season 4, do we now all go into the dirt? And other other ghosts? And what does that look like? It’s just gonna be one big Blair Witch Project episode. That’s really what I want to want to know.”

We were blessed this season with a Halloween episode, Ghosts Season 3 Episode 4, “Halloween 3: The Guest Who Wouldn’t Leave,” despite the fact the episode aired nowhere near Halloween (we’re not complaining!).

Pinnock shared her ideas for future holiday-themed episodes.

“I can’t wait til we get to do a Mother’s Day episode or Father’s Day or just like random you know… There are so many random holidays.” Pinnock continued, “Maybe there’s a pizza day or something that I know Sasappis would absolutely love.”

After mentioning that I could see Isaac going all out for the Fourth of July, Pinnock started laughing and was immediately on board.

“Oh my god. Absolutely. Oh, that would be fabulous. That’d be absolutely fabulous. Oh my gosh. Covered in flags. No Hamilton memorabilia at all. Just Isaac’s face. And oh my god, can you imagine just Sam photoshopping Rushmore of just all of them being him?”

Alberta has had the opportunity to sing a couple of times throughout the show, and Pinnock said that she enjoys those moments as much as we do and hopes Alberta broadens her repertoire in future seasons.

“It’s always an honor when I get to sing, and I’m really I’m excited to see what other songs Alberta learns and adds to her lexicon of just shenanigans.”

Pinnock continued, “I don’t know why I’m so interested in her rapping this season or learning about rap. Just because Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Jay, is such an incredible rapper, and I want us to utilize those skills. But who knows, we’ll see. It would be great if they had like a duet. I’m ready. They can be like Salt-N-Pepa.”

There’s one aspect about Alberta that the show hasn’t touched on that Pinnock is hoping they do.

“I also really am curious about the origin story behind Alberta’s hat because Thorfinn rags on her all the time about that hat. And I’m like, ‘Why is this hat so special to her? Why did she bring it the night that she got murdered?’ So yeah, it would be a great back-in-time thing.”

Ghosts returns this fall on CBS.
