The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie Review: Not For Randos

Reviews, TV Movies

The abundance of great television shows (it is the golden age of television after all), makes it easy to miss a few or dozens of impeccable TV series, especially if they’re not on a major streaming platform. The Real Bros of Simi Valley suffers from this issue. However, The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie may offer some justice.

With it streaming free on The Roku Channel, many may now decide to binge the YouTube and former Facebook Watch series. Unfortunately, the show may be too niche to appeal to a broader audience.

However, for those open-minded, like the series, The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie is a must-watch. It’s unapologetically hilarious.

Jimmy Tatro has been in some of the best spoof movies and TV shows of the last decade. He stole scenes in Theater Camp and was one of the best parts of American Vandal. He thrives at this type of content.

Therefore, it surprises no one that he’s excellent as real bro Xander. The movie and TV series not only show off his perfecting of this type of character but also highlight his directing and writing abilities.

Xander may be a lovable dummy but Tatro’s intelligence far surpasses his onscreen persona.

It takes a certain level of brilliance to write a movie and series as ridiculous as The Real Bros of Simi Valley. Tatro and writing partner Christian A. Pierce succeed in creating a film that feels true to the original.

Many TV shows that become films seem to feel the pressure to go bigger and bolder. They want to take things to the biggest scale possible. The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie doesn’t follow this pattern.

It has plenty of cameos and bigger-name actors, but the overall vibe just feels like an extended episode, rather than a movie.

Overall, this works because even if all the characters became billionaires, you’d expect them to maintain their lifestyle with a few obvious signs of wealth, like bigger trucks.

The characters are funny as always and long-running jokes, like Wade not burning, remain as strong as ever. The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie, however, does make you appreciate the ensemble cast more.

Everyone commits to their characters. Tatro remains the perfect person to lead this band of misfits, but we also must give props to some of the other standout performances.

Colleen Donovan’s performance as Molly has kind of been underappreciated. It took the movie to really realize the hilariousness of her character.

Bryce has always been one of The Real Bros of Simi Valley’s funniest characters, and this remains true in The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie. He gets one of the movie’s best moments: the Hawk funeral scene.

It calls back to their earlier beef with an added extra emotional level. You laugh but also feel grief in that moment. Getter plays the character so well.

Peter Gilroy has become one of the best memes because of his role as Johnny. We’re always straight up having a good time when he’s on the screen. Johnny brings a sensitivity and natural feeling of hilarity to the group.

Zoey Deutch’s Agoura is a new character specifically for the movie that fits right into this world. Tyler Posey’s Jatthew is also great, but Agoura is really the standout (by a mile) of the new characters.

If they ever do a sequel or bring back the show, Agoura definitely needs to make a few more guest appearances. The parody of Selling Sunset and those types of reality shows is one of the funniest gags of The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie.

Every cast member elevates their character in The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie. They’re just as funny as their show characters but with an extra sprinkle to push it even further.

The film has no shortage of things to praise, but it’s not flawless.

The biggest weakness is the runtime. The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie could work a little better with fewer minutes. Some of the storylines start to drag.

Things like the Duncan, Tessa, and Dani love triangle and Xander’s quest for the best truck could have retained their hilarity with a tighter runtime. About 15 to 20 minutes less and this could have been very close to a perfect movie for the series.

The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie works because it stays true to its roots. It doesn’t attempt to put the characters in too many grand situations because it’s a movie. This allows the actors to slip right into their familiar hilarious characters.

Overall, fans of the original TV show are going to love this movie.
