AT&T data breach: Am I affected? What Tennessee's past and present customers should know

Nearly all AT&T customers were affected by a data breach, the phone giant said Friday.

Customers' call and text message records were exposed in the breach, the company said, but the breach doesn't include the content of calls and texts. The company said it's working with law enforcement to arrest those involved and at least one person has been apprehended.

If you're an AT&T customer in Tennessee, here is what you need to know.

What data was exposed?

The company said its investigation found the data included phone call and text message records of "nearly all of AT&T cellular customers" from May 1, 2022 to Oct. 31, 2022 and on Jan. 2, 2023.

The records also identify other phone numbers that AT&T numbers interacted with during the time.

The company also said it does not believe the data is publicly available, as of Friday morning.

What data was not breached?

The downloaded data doesn’t include the content of calls or texts. The breach also didn't have time stamps.

No social security numbers, birth dates or other personally identifiable information was revealed.

Customers' names were not breached, but the company suggested there are ways still to find names associated with phone numbers using other publicly available tools online.

How do I know if my data was part of the breach?

The company said it will contact affected customers by text, email, or postal mail.

The company said it has invested nearly $2.3 billion in network infrastructure from 2019-2023 in Tennessee, out of which over $250 million was invested in Knoxville, over $450 million in Memphis area and over $800 million in Nashville, Davidson, Murfreesboro and Franklin areas.
