WASHINGTON DC – West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat, officially filed as an independent Friday.
“My commitment to do everything I can to bring out country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation,” Manchin posted on the social platform X.
Manchin announced in November that he wouldn’t be running for reelection this year, after serving in the Senate since 2010. Before coming to Congress, he served as the governor of West Virginia from 2005-10.
“Throughout my days in elected office, I have always been proud of my commitment to common sense, bipartisanship and my desire to bring people together. It’s who I am,” Manchin said in a statement released Friday. “It’s who I will always be.”
He signaled Wednesday that he would not enter the governor’s race this year, shooting down rumors that he may campaign again for the office.
In a statement Friday, Manchin said partisanship on both sides has jeopardized democracy. National politics in America is broken, and neither side is willing to compromise, he said.
“To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America’s sensible majority,” he said. (read more)

Sundance, true, but there is great value in the symbolism of it. The two-party system continues to break down. I don’t mean that from a day-to-day operational point of view. Nothing will change in terms of legislation, policy, or abhorrent behaviors. But it breaks that mental log jam people have that there’s a Democrat and a Republican party and you have to pick a team.
The timing also matters. We just had a Democrat judge, a Democrat DA, working with a Democrat federal government and a Democrat jury to carry out a kangaroo court against the leading candidate for POTUS. The next day, a Democrat Senator leaves the Democrat Party. And Trump’s chief rival for 2024 – DeSantis – just called the whole case in New York a total scam and kangaroo court. That matters, even if in both cases their motives are cynical and self-serving.
That “We cool?” statement? They’re not cool. Manchin leaving doesn’t lose them any votes in DC. But it calls into question the legitimacy of the current, fraudulent, 2-party system. These are not intelligent people. Remember when they used the nuclear option? They thought they’d never be out of power. Then Trump and the Republicans used that tool like a broom handle on a constipated Yorkie.
Don’t underestimate the impact of very public people abandoning the stated 2-party construct. People use frameworks like the 2-party system to organize their lives. If you blow up that framework, anything can happen. And that’s a good thing for us.

The only reason I can think of is that he doesn’t want to be connected to the Democrat party for whatever his next endeavor is after politics. Especially if he stays in West Virginia.
If he truly wants to be independent, the caucus with independents! There are enough independents in the Senate to move the needle!!

He’s going to run for Governor of WV as an independent. He missed out on the primary, so he can’t run as a Democrat unless the nominee steps aside (and he won’t). But, the Republican candidate for Governor is MAGA so the GOPe wants an alternative they can stomach. Manchin was popular as Governor 20 years ago, so the thought is he can take most of the Democrat votes and independents and the GOPe and maybe win.
