Are you guys reading for your semi-annual update about the possibility of a “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel? Well, it’s here. And no, it doesn’t sound like it’s any closer to happening. That said, it’s not dead either.

Speaking to Empire, filmmaker Doug Liman continued to tease the possibility of a sequel to his 2014 acclaimed sci-fi action film, “Edge of Tomorrow.” While it’s clear the film is still in the “potential” phase, that doesn’t mean the project is dead. In fact, discussions are ongoing.

“No, we keep talking about it,” said Liman. “We love that world.”

If you’re not hip to who he’s talking about with that “we” comment, it’s Tom Cruise. Apparently, Liman and Cruise “keep talking about” the possibility of a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow.” Unfortunately, that’s not a guarantee.

Even if they started production today, there would be a massive time gap between films. But that doesn’t bother Liman. He actually compared that gap to another sci-fi action franchise.

“I don’t know how long [James] Cameron took with his ‘Terminators,’ but at the time it felt like a long time,” Liman said.

It’s really difficult to believe that we’re going to see a day when a “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel gets made. Not only is Tom Cruise not getting any younger (though that probably won’t stop him), but he has a number of projects on his plate before he would consider a sequel. There’s the final “Mission: Impossible” film that is still being made. Then there’s that space movie with Liman that he is supposed to make. And Liman has “The Saint” remake in the works. It just seems like there will always be another, hotter project on the docket. Let’s not forget that “Edge of Tomorrow” was a hit with fans, but it wasn’t a massive blockbuster.

Doug Liman’s next film is “The Instigators,” which arrives in theaters on August 2.
