All Unfortunate things must come to an end. Neil Patrick Harris confirms that his Netflix dramedy A Series of Unfortunate Events will fade to permanent black at the conclusion of Season 3.
“It was always the plan to do [just] three seasons, which I really liked,” the How I Met Your Mother vet tells TVLine. “It makes me feel like we’re doing a specific piece of art, as opposed to just hoping that the zeitgeist holds us up for as many seasons as people can stomach.” Although Netflix has yet to formally renew the series for a third season (perhaps the streamer is waiting until after Season 2 drops later this month), Harris reveals that the farewell season will consist of seven episodes — which is one less than Season 1’s eight and three less than Season 2’s 10.
Regarding Season 2, Harris teases that the Baudelaire children — who quickly flee their new Prufrock Preparatory School digs — have upped their game considerably, much to Count Olaf’s frustration. “They’re more active because they are out of the fog of dismay and passive upset,” he explains. “Before they were being shuffled; now they realize they have to shuffle themselves… So Olaf is more chasing moving targets as opposed to plotting against static ones.”
Violet, Klaus and Sunny “realize that they don’t have any adults in their world to help,” Harris continues. “They’re the only ones that can solve their own problems. So they’re working towards a conclusion that’s satisfying to them.”
Unfortunate Events‘ second season makes its Netflix debut on Friday, March 30.
Makes sense. Not sure about the episode count. 2 eps/books works. 4 books in S1, 5 books in S2, leaves 4 books left… which either means one of the books will get shorted an ep, or they’ll combine the last two books into three eps. IIRC, the final book was long and complicated enough to warrant 3 eps on its own – 8 or 9 eps for the season would’d’ve been much better.
.
But it’s early days yet, plenty of time to up the episode count!
It’ll be two eps each for books 10, 11, and 12; and one long episode for book 13.
That would make sense. Almost like ending it with a mini movie.
This is a good way to go about planning this series. Imo most series, except some staple procedurals and others with inherent longevity of their plot, should map out their seasons and have a general idea of where they’ll end.
Agreed. Too many shows drag on after the first few seasons, and it’s pretty clear that the showrunners had no overarching vision. It would be nice if more shows were actually mapped out ahead of time.
This is what, the third time this has been confirmed?
Also the show was renewed for season 3 in April 2017.
“A Series of Unfortunate Events Renewal Extended Through Season 3 at Netflix
By Michael Ausiello / April 4 2017”
This has been confirmed so many times previously that I thought for sure my phone had accidentally loaded an old page.
Three seasons was always the plan to begin with to cover all the books.
I really wished that more shows have done that. If the broadcast and cable nets would have talked to Revenge producers early on, and say let’s have 3 seasons and wrap it up, then they wouldn’t have to wreck their brains to come up with “new ideas” (which are really just ridiculous subplots) for each new season. Same with Once Upon A Time and Scandal (should have just said let’s wrap it up in 3-4 seasons).
Meeeeeeeeeeeoooooooowwwwww!!!
Boo! I never want it to end! I’m going to miss it and so will my grandkids!
