Warning: The following contains spoilers for Thursday’s Imposters finale.
Imposters fans, how badly do you want another season after that ending? The recently cancelled Bravo drama wrapped up its run on Thursday with a tantalizing twist: After the group defeated the Doctor, Ezra answered one of the boss’ phones and pretended to be the doc.
As for how we got to that final scene: Sally was actually the one who killed the Doctor, while Maddie played decoy. Both women then took off — but Maddie was intercepted by Patrick, who arrested her for the murder. Elsewhere, the Bumblers agreed to meet up in six months before going their separate ways.
Below, creators Paul Adelstein and Adam Brooks reveal whether Ezra’s gone to the dark side and if fixer Shelly Cohen — who got knocked out by Jules — is still alive. They also discuss what they had planned for a third season. (For the latest on whether the series will be shopped to another outlet, click here.)
TVLINE | The Doctor is dead, but his operation seemingly lives on in Ezra now. What does it mean for Ezra to take on that persona?
ADAM BROOKS | From the beginning of the show, we often described him as a puppy dog… and he turns into a man. And that would have many different implications, one of which is that the con itself was something that was very seductive for him. As Maddie says, “You got the adventure you always wanted.” And then about a year ago, as we were starting to think about Season 2, we had this image of him as a kind of Michael Corleone, sitting into the Doctor’s chair, in the way that Al Pacino sits into the chair of his father at the end of The Godfather. So we were always playing with that notion of: What if the seduction of that was strong, especially after all of the things that he’s gone through — the loss of his father, his guilt, his increasing distance from his former life? It’s a really interesting twist. Of course, it would’ve been really fun to investigate what happens with all of that, and how deep it goes. But the idea that he was moving toward the con as Maddie tried to have a normal life was always at the center of the show, and at the center of their tension as rivals and lovers.
TVLINE | There isn’t that same darkness in him that there was in the Doctor. What kind of a leader as the Doctor would he have been? Did you give that any thought?
PAUL ADELSTEIN | We did, only a little, because we thought, “Well, how deep is he going to go into this?” There were various ways to go: He could abandon them immediately. He could find it disgusting. He could try to do it, and do it right. He could make it a Robin Hood thing. Or he could go totally to the dark side. We have all that written down on a piece of paper somewhere, but we certainly didn’t make any of those decisions yet.
BROOKS | But I don’t think it’s like, two days later, he’s the Doctor, [ordering] Shelly Cohen to, like, mutilate somebody. It’s not who he is, so that’s not what it would be. He’s more curious than he is settled in anything yet. He’s not done with this life, with the idea of being unmoored and living this kind of life. It’s sort of like Max’s character, [who is] in love with the life, the job, the con. He accepts the downsides of it because he feels alive doing it. And that’s what’s happening to Ezra. So I think he’s going to investigate if there’s a version of himself that can do that. I’m sure he’ll find out it’s much more complicated than he thinks.
TVLINE | Has Ezra shaken Maddie?
ADELSTEIN | I don’t know if any of them will ever shake Maddie, or if Maddie will ever shake them. But certainly, he was ready to move forward with Sophia. Of course, we had some complications planned for that relationship, as well.
BROOKS | Whenever Maddie and Ezra are in a room together, neither one of them is safe from what might happen. And that won’t change. She, too, is not completely in control of herself when he’s nearby.
TVLINE | Everyone gets away fairly unscathed except for Maddie, who’s arrested. Why did you decide to give her the one potentially sad ending?
ADELSTEIN | I don’t know if she seems sad. There’s a sense of relief that she has. Her goal was accomplished, which was to free herself from the Doctor. One of our themes for Season 2 was consequences, and Maddie and the Doctor, obviously, have to pay the heaviest consequence. It seemed appropriate that after she comes to terms with herself a little bit at the Harbor, and then she moves forward into the world to try to make things right by eliminating the Doctor, that she has to face the music. It felt right to us.
TVLINE | Is Shelly Cohen still alive?
ADELSTEIN | Yes, he just has a bad headache. [Laughs]
TVLINE | With the Doctor out of the picture, would Shelly Cohen have become the primary antagonist?
ADELSTEIN | We never decided that. We certainly always relished the idea of getting Shelly and Lenny together to see what those two would be like in a room together. But Shelly and Lenny exist to do other people’s bidding. They’re not really interested in calling the shots. They just want to go out and be the sword of justice.
BROOKS | They’re a very fun potential wrinkle in anything that would’ve happened in Season 3. Paul’s always said, they’re a little bit sort of magic. They’re like from another universe a bit, and whenever they land on Imposters planet, it wakes and shakes the whole thing up in a great way.
TVLINE | Did Sophia keep Sally’s secret that Sally killed the Doctor, and that it wasn’t Maddie?
ADELSTEIN | Well, so far. The question would become: Does Maddie get charged with murder? Do they actually have proof that she murdered him? And does Sophia become a linchpin in all that?
BROOKS | And by the way, just to be clear: Sophia didn’t see the Doctor getting murdered. So what exactly happened or didn’t happen, she doesn’t know herself completely. And she has her own reasons to always suspect Maddie. We decided that nobody really breaks down and analyzes the whole thing. The Bumblers hate the idea that Maddie would have done it, and yet, there it is. They’re struggling with that because of what she means to them. And then they know that Sally is gone. It’s running through everybody’s mind, and all of them want to, but don’t want to deal with it.
TVLINE | The show’s greatest love story was the friendship between Richard, Jules and Ezra. Where do you imagine they are in six months in light of that ending?
ADELSTEIN | We felt that it was time for them to go their separate ways, that they concluded this journey, but that they had developed a bond that was undeniable. We wanted to do justice to that, and we wanted to leave it open that they would be able to find one another again. So we didn’t really know what form that was going to take, but we certainly knew that they weren’t going to be out of one another’s lives.
BROOKS | We’d see how strong the “all for one and one for all” thing would go, and what their lives are like without each other and without all this adventure. Does Richard actually try to run for office? What are the issues [with] that? What’s it like for Jules to have a relationship now, or for Richard? So I think that by the time they do catch up to each other, there’s going to be a lot to unpack for them. Plus, whatever crisis is ongoing for any or all of them.
TVLINE | The Doctor’s phones made me wonder if we were ever going to meet any of the other teams working for him.
ADELSTEIN | We thought about Ernie from Cincinnati, sure. That’d be fun.
Imposters fans, what did you think of the series finale? Grade it below!
So pissed at Bravo for canceling this show!!
Im hoping Netflix revives it or maybe we could even get a movie. I’m not over the cast or the cons!
l just finished watching this series which I never heard of.. I think the problem was that Bravo never advertised the Show .
Too bad
They should have promoted. it. Bad decision.
“Maddie” should have been on all of the talk shows. It must have been the same executives that almost canceled Seinfield.

Season One was terrific. Season Two, with the same outstanding cast, was a serious disappointment. No surprise that the ratings went downhill. I’d hope for the show being rescued from the dead except that I’ve lost confidence in the writers.
I felt like that after watching the first two episodes of season two, it just didn’t have the fast pace and excitement of season one, but then they where really setting up the season in those first few episodes. I just finished binge watching the last 8 episodes and have to say that by the end, the second season was much better then it started, but it was a little too much like the first in it’s move towards the end. I’m glad The Doctor story was wrapped, wished for more Lenny and Shelly, and was ultimately satisfied with the ending and the hint of what was to come if a third season happened. All in all I will miss the show, such a great cast, but as far as endings go (even unplanned finishes like this), it was a really good way for the show to finish, wrapped up enough to satisfy with just the right amount of hinting at where it would go if it continued.
For me, among other problems, Season Two took WAY too long to really get going.
Would the third season have picked up at the 6 month later meet up?
If they thought about Ernie can we get a hint of who they’d want for him or at least what type of character he’d have been.
When watching Ezra throw the phones over the falls I called that one would ring and he’d answer.
Whats the point of a network cancelling a program just before the finale? I watched up until the 2nd last episode, and knowing there’s no true end, I just gave up.
Love the show.
That said, Ezra is the worst.
As finales go, this one was pretty satisfying. It resolved The Doctor’s storyline, had Patrick catch Maddie, let the three exes go their separate ways (for now), and left enough of a cliffhanger to keep it interesting. I thought the scene near the end with Ezra, Richard and Jules saying goodbye was terrific and really showed the chemistry that was built up between these characters. I always knew Sally was the true bad-ass of the group! Season two wasn’t as good as season one, but it was still a fun show with a good cast and interesting storyline.
I agree – really good ending!! It was almost like the end of a movie, where you think “oh awesome, they’re probably going to make a sequel to continue that story!” Unfortunately, we don’t get that here, but the majority of the story was still wrapped up nicely.
I thought I was the only one who found it satisfying as well. I was disappointed that it was cancelled but the finale wrapped up the main storylines pretty well and left enough room for you to wonder what would happen next. I certainly hope this is not the last we see of the actors because they were amazing and made the characters easy to root for.
Here is the play.
Start the push for Inbar Lavi to be Batgirl in the DCEU.
She can certainly handle the acting. And those eyes looking at you from behind the Batgirl cowl would be perfect.
So she would be bank, and anyone would want her on their network.
See you in the game.
Interesting idea. And here is a prediction. Back in 1992 a large promotional poster for Batman Returns–a life sized picture of a masked, latex clad Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman– was placed in the New York Subway System. It “disappeared” within several hours. Any posters of Inbar Lavi as Batgirl would undoubtedly suffer a similar fate. Until then, I sincerely hope and pray that we are all granted a special gift. The opportunity to watch Maddie’s transformation in Season 3 of Imposters!
The filming of the end with the hotel almost get like a dream sequence. The initial shot of the motel had this fuzzy effect around the edges the background music… Also I’ve never seen a hotel/motel with a window in the door and there wasn’t even a curtain on the inside of the door to close. A window making the bed visible from the outside with no way to obscure it? Seems off to me.
Hi,
I get so sick and tired of watching the Housewives and Married to Medicine and below deck and Southern Charm or whatever else. Bravo please bring the Imposters back for season 3 so many people enjoyed it. It was so good. At the end such a great twist.
Please bring it back with the original cast don’t change a thing. #perfection
Hello…..
You will regret your decision if you don’t bring back the Imposters. It’s a great entertainment show. So many things are boring on Bravo.
So tired of the housewives. We need more shows like the Imposters.
And while we are talking about Bravo you need to bring back Brandi Glanville and a few others. The OC is going to be so boring this season. I won’t be watching.
I love comments like this. “You will regret your decision….” Does Vasey think that Bravo will completely fold if IMPOSTERS doesn’t get another season? Or that IMPOSTERS will go elsewhere and become a spectacular hit? It wasn’t this season; the ratings took a dive from Season One and that’s why it was canceled. Despite a disappointing Season Two, I’d be very happy to see the show return to life somewhere. And I couldn’t care less if Bravo lives or dies. But, wow, “You will regret your decision….” Is there a guarantee on that ominous warning? :-)
Love the comparison of season 2 ending to the Godfather ending. Deep down we know that Civilization cannot survive if we condone vigilante justice. But the Doctor was such a horrific sociopathic monster, he HAD TO DIE!
The Finale was so well done that I pray for a resurrection of the show in a Season 3 somewhere. The major theme of “things are not what they seem” makes so many new twists possible. Sure, Patrick puts the cuffs on Maddie. He was so close to nabbing the Doctor that he had to arrest somebody. But what if Maddie repeats her offer to “run away together?”. Or what if he lets Maddie go, so that the case is not closed, at least until there is time to investigate the possibility of Maddie being innocent of murder? And what if the Bumblers meeting in six months is not a sappy high school reunion event., but rather a high octane pursuit of Maddie’s Theme me of Always Forward, Never Back. It would be amazing if they all became the Dexters of the Con World, Conning the Cons, and using the proceeds to truly make the world a better place.
Please, PLEASE bring Imposters back for a Season 3!
This show was awesome! I want there to be a season 3 and maybe the doctor wasn’t the actual boss. So the actual boss continues and the FBI guy let’s Maddie go since he loves her. And all the gang still has to figure out how to get away or something. I don’t know but that was a great show. Whoever wrote it should make a lot more shows. I loved it.
I’m sure going to miss this show. Excellent finale
I would love you guys to find a way to continue season 3. Streaming, bravo, Netflix..freeform, ect.. i think is a really good series to continue.
personally I liked the whole series and can’t wait for series 3
Okay people we need a season 3 so let’s hope that Bravo can get it together and let us have a season three! This show is the best on tv and it gets cancelled, not cool! Someone please pick this show up so we can see if Maddie gets free and if Ezra can be any kind of doctor? We want a Season 3!
It took a few episodes from Season 1 to get into it, but once I did I was hooked. I watch NOTHING else on Bravo and now that ‘Imposters’ has been canceled I will delete them from my list of channels. Very bad move by Bravo.
I will truly miss Imposters. So sad to see that Bravo did not pick up a season 3! The Season 2 finale was superb but left you hanging wanting more!
I contacted USA to rescue the show. A long shot but worth a try. I am a huge fan of Katherine Lanasa! ‘Imposters’ is better than her last drama ‘Satisfaction.’
This show is awesome!!! Please bring it back. This show could be on every day and never get old!!!!
I *just* discovered “Imposters yesterday morning. I fell in love. Binged S1 on Netflix, then S2 today. Just finished it, Googled S3, and I find out it’s been cancelled. Devastating. :-(
I think Maddie was really in love with Patrick. I was hoping that she would get immunity and maybe reconnect with Patrick. When he took her hand on the bus I was waiting for him to say that he loved her…. Not arrest her
I agree – that’s what I was expecting. Mhat a lousy ending. And one of the writers said , “Maddie’s getting arrested seemed rights to him”
I’m in agreement as well. I watched all 20 episodes to see Maddie find some kind of relief for her tortured soul. Having her get arrested by a vindictive Patrick was a terrible ending. Very disappointed. I was totally sold on the series until they wrote Maddie off in the 4th last scene of the movie…it wasn’t even the last scene..and she was the main character! Also very disappointed that one of the writers thought Maddie having to face the music was right to him. (Remember she didn’t commit the murder despite her intentions…).
I have been hooked on this show since the beginning so sad to see it go it has got to be picked up somewhere so sick of the reality shows every time it seems I get into a show it gets taken off the air but maybe luck will be on my side this time and some network will pick up Imposters again
So tired of good shows being canceled. I feel like not even watching tv anymore. Everytime I get hooked on a show that’s not a reality show..they cancel it. what’s with the industry today? Back in the days shows ran more than 2 seasons and in fact have reruns even 50+ years later.
I vote to continue the series
Im addicted
So sad to see Bravo did not pick up a season 3 of Imposters! Great twist with season 2 finale and was looking forward to seeing the new season and how far Ezra was gong to go…. so goodbye Maddie…fairwell Bumblers! You will be greatly missed!
