One of The Resident‘s upcoming medical emergencies might hit a little too close to home.
Ahead of the Fox drama’s Season 2 debut, executive producer Todd Harthan is hinting at a character death that could rock the halls of Chastain Park Memorial Hospital moving forward.
Harthan first alluded to the death earlier this month, when he cryptically hoped for viewers “to get attached to all of these characters this season, because… not everyone survives Season 2.”
Pressed for details in a subsequent interview — tied to our forthcoming Fall TV Preview — Harthan tells TVLine it will be “a bit of a guessing game” as to which sophomore-year character could potentially leave the show — and there will be more than one possibility.
“What you’ll find in the first six episodes are several characters on the board that legitimately could exit our world, one way or another. That’s both returning and new,” he teases.
The Resident has already set a precedent for major character exits: In addition to the death of cancer patient Lily, the show has written out Dr. Lane Hunter (played by Melina Kanakaredes) and Chastain Park’s ex-CEO Claire Thorpe (Merrin Dungey).
But in Season 2, according to Harthan, “there are more characters on the board that you’re going to be invested in, that you’re going to care about, that you’re going to be rooting for, who are either in medical or physical danger.”
The Resident returns Monday, Sept. 24, at 8/7c on Fox. What are your early theories on a potential big death in Season 2?
An excellent show with great acting by everyone. I’m thinking the death will be one or more of the S2 additions. Looking forward to S2.
I could be and addition of a character from S2 however given the medical issues Dr. Bell has it could be him as well. I think we just have to wait and see.
I hadn’t thought about Dr. Bell when I was thinking that could be a great choice if in addition to the CEO factor he also continues to try to be a surgeon. Which lends itself to the possibility to phenomenal errors hmmm there could be potential for quite the story arc with him.
Conrad’s dad dies, leaving him a millionaire with many unresolved issues with his father.
I hope not! I would love to see more of Conrad and his Dad and navigating their relationship. It’s one of the things I am most looking forward to!!!!
Looking forward to Conrad and his Dad too. I hope it’s not Conrad’s Dad but humanitarian Conrad with a huge inheritance with which to do good must have crossed the showrunners minds at some point.
This show surprised me with how well it was written and acted. I came across it on Hulu. I stop watching shows once they kill off main characters. Why is it necessary for shows to do this. Can’t they hire writers to think of creative stories. I am tired of this plot trick.
Major characters are often killed or otherwise written out because the actors want to leave for some reason or parties can’t come to a contractual agreement. I agree that too many die. But if producers feel an actor is being unreasonable, they may be tempted to kill off the character for spite. Other times, it could be a situation that a character wouldn’t leave for anything short of death.
Sometimes actors want to move on. Sometimes it’s because of pay or contract issues. But it also allows for story progression and the introduction of new characters and plot lines. It’s how fiction works. Duh.
My guess is the doctor that works in the ER. I can’t remember his name and he hasn’t been focused on too much, but everyone else in the cast has interacted with him at some point.
I think you mean Dr. Irving Feldman. I hope he’s not leaving. He is very funny and interacts well with the entire cast.
Hope Conrad’s dad doesn’t die . Conniving Bell needs someone to throw s monkey wrench into his corruption
