Three weeks into Lifetime‘s YOU, it’s becoming hard not to feel like the universe is secretly rooting for Joe to succeed. For someone who spends most of his waking hours stalking people, he simply isn’t very good at it, leaving paper trails and sending up literal smoke signals after committing various misdeeds. He may be the luckiest, worst stalker-murderer in this fine network’s long history of stalker-murderers.
Let’s look back at all the ways Joe’s dumb luck saved him this week alone: When the power went out at the bookstore, his co-worker called ahead before having the electrician bust the lock on the basement door, where he would have discovered Benji’s corpse; when the police were looking into his suspicious purchases, they didn’t immediately check the trunk of his car, where Benji’s stinky body was rotting at record speeds; and when Beck asked how he knew her room wasn’t big enough for a king-size mattress, he pulled that recovery line (“It’s New York”) out of his butt. And it actually worked.
Speaking of Beck, she seems to have found a new rival in Blythe, an insufferable girl in her writing class. They have a very Elle Woods/Vivian Kensington dynamic at the moment, with Blythe effortlessly undercutting Beck’s confidence and judging her for not completing required assignments. Tensions are also growing between Peach and Joe, who appear to be the only characters with working noses. Not only was Peach repulsed by the Benji-corpse stank in Joe’s trunk, but she also told Beck that she thinks he stole a book from her library.
Of course, I can’t even think about any of the above after witnessing Joe’s sexual misfire in the final shot of the episode. I can’t say I’m surprised that his first time with Beck ended in under a minute, but I can say that I’ll never get the sound of Penn Badgley’s nervous ejaculation out of my head. It will be with me always.
Also worth discussing…
* Joe bringing Beck a box of pancake mix is super gross, right? Like, arguably the least subtle exploitation of someone’s daddy issues that I’ve ever seen.
* As someone who hasn’t read the book, I’m excited to hear what really went down between Joe and his ex-girlfriend.

I’d say about a fourth of tonight’s episode happened in the book. Usually I’d be annoyed but the show is really good. I’m not going to say anything about Candice because it may be spoilers for the show.
I’m loving this show. It’s proving to be not only a pleasant surprise, but a guilty pleasure. It’s a shame more people aren’t watching this gem. It takes the stalker troupe & turns on it’s head. I find that very refreshing. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
Saw the first episode and really liked it. Sat down to watch the second to find that Spectrum removed Lifetime and replace it with the damn Movies Network. Was so peeved.
Deus ex machina reigns supreme on this show. Hard pass.
Love the show. He manages to get himself in deep doo doo and somehow miraculously wiggles out of it in the nick of time. I find it hilarious and charming.
The fact that he came in under a minute will probably be harder for him to explain than if Beck had found Benji’s body, lol.
I’m really loving this show – creepy and charming – love it
I love this show and i feel like i’m pervert for rooting for Joe, i was stunned when he shoot inside her, that’s really was awkward thing! but the act is really super
After watching the first two episodes I devoured the first two novels in two days. I love the series! My only issue is Peach. Compared to the novel, her tv counterpart seems to be toned down, which just doesn’t feel right. Peach was hated by Becks friends and Peach hated anyone who spent time with Beck besides her, the friends included. The reason Peaches nose is as fine tuned as Joes, is because *SPOILER ALERT* she’s a crazy obsessive stalker as well. The main difference between Joe and Peach, is I think Peaches motives are more self centred. Not that Joes a saint by any means, but Peaches desire to absorb every aspect of Becks life, and isolate her all under the guise of a friend in need is just wrong. Joes obsessions typically stem from generally unhealthy situations, like Benji, or Peach, or Dr Nicky. Granted we never get to see him deal with genuinely healthy and well adjusted people for comparison, but this seems to be the runnning pattern. Generally bad person, Joe overkill’s where most would simply run or report. I can’t wait for season 2 with Love Quinn, of all the girls Joe dates, she’s my favourite. Her name is Love for Pete’s sake. Fingers crossed for Book 3 and Season 3!
