The apocalypse is nigh at Netflix. The streaming service on Saturday released the first footage from its live-action adaptation of The Umbrella Academy (premiering Friday, Feb. 15), based on the Dark Horse comic book series of the same name.
The ensemble is led by Ellen Page (Juno), whose Vanya Hargreeves (aka The White Violin) was one of 43 infants who were “inexplicably born in 1989 to random, unconnected women, who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before,” according to the official logline. Vanya is among the seven children who are “adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy, and prepares his ‘children’ to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing, and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.”
In addition to Page, the series’ ensemble includes Tom Hopper (Black Sails) as Luther Hargreeves/Spaceboy, David Castañeda (Switched at Birth) as Diego Hargreeves/The Kraken, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves/The Rumor, Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) as Number Five/The Boy and Robert Sheehan (Fortitude) as Klaus Hargreeves/The Séance.

I know nothing about this show or its universe, but I’ll give it a try. It’s nice to see Robert Sheehan again.
He’s a fantaaaaastic actor! Loved him on “Misfits”.
hey, everyone! If you haven’t watched “Misfits” yet… yeah it’s super weird but it’s also brilliant!
is that Dickon?
Hard to say from the trailer – is it targeted more at adults or tweens?
The comic series was geared toward young adults (high school and college age), but I would say it has appeal beyond the target age group. The overall tone of the books was fairly tongue-in-cheek, so far from the dark, gritty realism you often expect to see from subscription services. But it does deal with some darker themes, like addiction and child abuse, that wouldn’t necessarily be appropriate for a very young audience.
The write up says they adopt 7 chilxdren, he says 6 in the trailer.. There are 6 on the photo in the trailer then when it goes through the numbers it skips number 6 and does number 7.
Are there 6 or 7 of them???
“the six surviving members” might be your answer. I’m guessing either he adopted seven and one didn’t even survive until his announcement or number seven was an addition made after number six’s death.
In the trailer there are 7 children when they first show them, and the portrait on the wall has 7 children. According to the Wikipedia page for the comic, one of them subsequently becomes a supervillain.
There were 7 but something happened to No. 6 since the start of the comic. I’m sure the series will follow suit.
I’ll need there for a bit of Dickon 😁
Netflix’s answer to the Marvel replacement. Spiraling down that rabbit hole along with mass exodus of their subscribers.
Why are they different ages? Well at least one of them is?
Minor spoiler, but the younger-looking character, Number Five, has time-travelling abilities. As a side effect, he ends up trapped in his ten-year-old body (though it looks like Netflix aged him up slightly). He’s actually older than everyone else, having come back from the future.
