As we near the two-year anniversary of the balls-out crazy Blood Drive‘s unceremonious cancellation, series creator James Roland has given Bleeders another taste of what Seasons 2 and 3 would have looked like.
The ending of the Season 1 finale, which aired on Syfy in September 2017, suggested a new Blood Rock prison setting for at least bare-naked Arthur (played by Titans‘ Alan Ritchson), whom Grace (Animal Kingdom‘s Christina Ochoa) had forced through a blood gate to safety as Heart HQ collapsed on top of her, Karma (Alex McGregor), a dying/dead Slink (Colin Cunningham), a dying/dead Christopher (Thomas Dominique) and a tearful Aki (Marama Corlet).
Previously, Roland said that Season 2 would actually be titled Blood Rock, as in the name of the aforementioned prison, and tell what was “in many ways a brand-new story that took place in the same universe,” with “a bunch of grindhouse sub-genres all crammed into a prison island.”
As cast member Ritchson told TVLine last fall, Season 2 “was going to be this prison island with a bunch of crazy prisoners and horrible people, and Arthur sort of going from section of the prison to section of the prison,” Snowpiercer-style.
As for those who appeared to have been crushed in the Heart Tower collapse, Roland avowed, “death is real in the world of Blood Drive … but that doesn’t mean if you die, your story has to end.”
Now, in a response to a fan tweeted over the weekend, Roland further teased that the Season 2 premiere would have delivered one of “the coolest plot twists ever,” adding: “I don’t think another show has done it yet.” From there, the show would have gone in a “whole new direction with lots of new characters.”
Season 3 would then have “collide[d] these characters with those left behind in Season 1.”
Even dearly departed, lollipop-loving Grace?! “I speak for myself and I hope most of the cast when I say that… we would be honored and lucky to tackle these roles again — whether they take it the anthology route, or a movie, or a streaming thing,” Ochoa told TVLine ahead of the Season 1 finale.
Blood Drive Season 1 averaged 470,000 live weekly viewers, fewer than Syfy’s Dark Matter (which had been cancelled just prior) but on par with that which earned Wynonna Earp a Season 3 pick-up. Roland has said that Syfy’s failure to sell Blood Drive into a “second window” for revenue-enhancing streaming, such as on Netflix, is one of the reasons a pick-up was less attractive. (Read much more on that here.)
Even so, Roland said at the time of cancellation, “despite canceling us, Syfy was the only network with the steel to make the show in the first place… and for that I’m forever grateful.”
I never heard of this show. Interesting read. I wonder what the unprecedented twist may have been.
Re-read paragraphs 4-7. You’re welcome.
I don’t see how this is a never before done twist. It sounds like what American Horror Story has done with characters from new seasons meeting returning characters from older seasons.
You misread; he didn’t say what the twist was.
This was one of those shows that should have been terrible but wasn’t because of the cast especially Christina.I’d love more seasons.
God, I loved this every week a different genre they talked in the world of grindhouse and horror. The cast was more than great Christina was awesome but the character that I thought stole the show was Slink. I really wish we would have got a second and third season.
No reason for not having more seasons. Especially now. I mean… HAPPY!! That show is more demented then an elephant eating Irish babies! Grind house gives people that sickening desire in a viewing way. Just so “F***ed” up, but still very addicting to watch. Great graphics, amazing story, incredible cast!! I have a huge idea for season 2, 3, and 4 so let’s get it back!!!!
This show was completely bonkers and should not have been as good as it was, but it was kinda awesome. I’m still mad it was canceled after just one season.
I think sci-fi should bring back blood drive I think sci-fi it’s a little too weak I think they need to make this as a storyline I think they need to make this from season 1 keep going from season 1 to season 2 to season 3 and make it to season 4 I think we need to see more of it I know they had 470,000 viewers I was one of them but I didn’t like how the first one ended I wanted to know what was going to happen I want to see more so can we bring it back please I want to see more blood drive I want to know what’s going to happen in the prison I want to know about Grace
Please bring back blood drive, there is nothing like it and so many way you can take it… it is unique, glorious story line, and with proper marketing based on todays si-fi can beat the competition with a simple trailer and try… make a trailer and see the response.. it will be wynonna which I like as well and has great potential if marketed the correct way… the audience is there and will our current state in the country… good story line compiled with exquisite, different stories will overtake the other, again based on proper marketing (one of my masters).. I would help for free if need be.. please consider.. thank you!
You can’t find “Blood Drive ” on the SYFY Or any of the other streaming sites. Even youtube doesn’t have any full episodes that you can download or watch. What happened to being able to stream anything at anytime? Typical NBC SYFY they got a show that people like and want to watch and they can’t kill it off fast enough. It’s as if they try to drive viewers away with gusto and will do anything to ruin a show that the average person will like, but then they will bend over backwards and turn themselves inside out to promote and make crap that never should have made it past the highschool English teachers trash can let alone on a cable network TV channel, even one as crapy as SYFY AKA where Marvel’s re-re-reruns go to live on as Vampires. Whoever is in charge of programming needs to consider upping the Voltage and Ampridge on their home do-it-yourself Electroshock system to 440v instead of 120v. And get it done with, So that we can get a break from Captin unless and the mouscachearrs.
