Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s Riverdale season finale.
Riverdale wrapped up Season 4 by adding another twist to the videotape voyeur mystery… but we were left thinking about what we didn’t get to see.
Wednesday’s finale was originally slated as the 19th episode of Season 4, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it ended up becoming the season finale. And it was certainly eventful: After Principal Honey pushed the teens too far by threatening to cancel prom, Jughead penned a short story about them taking deadly revenge on him. In real life, they discovered Honey manufactured a fake video from the voyeur and got him fired because of it, but he insisted he was just trying to keep his students safe. Indeed, Jughead found out that Honey wrote him a warm letter of recommendation to the University of Iowa’s writing program, and Honey took over as Stonewall Prep’s new headmaster. But then they received the voyeur’s latest video: a macabre depiction of the teens stabbing Honey to death, mirroring the events of Jughead’s fictional tale.
Still, Riverdale fans were left asking: Where’s prom? Where’s graduation? Don’t worry… they’re coming. TVLine chatted with Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who detailed the thought process behind ending Season 4 on that “shocking, gruesome” cliffhanger and also gave us a sneak peek at what we can expect at the beginning of Season 5. Plus, he addresses Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols’ departures from the show — and promises we haven’t seen the last of the Archie-Betty-Jughead love triangle.
TVLINE | This week’s episode ends up being the season finale, even though it wasn’t written as such. Did you discuss any other options for ending the season, like adding narration or footage from Episode 20?
We had shot about half or two-thirds of Episode 20, which was our senior prom episode. So when we shut down, the first thing I did was I looked at all the footage from Episode 20 to see if we could cobble together a finale from that, or if we could steal footage. And honestly, though we’d shot the prom, which was amazing spectacle and had great emotional stuff, there were so many scenes between Betty and Jughead, and Archie and Veronica, which we hadn’t shot, that it felt like, “Let’s let that episode be.” And then I saw the cut of Episode 19, which I loved. The fun thing about [Episode] 19 is all of the kids are in the story together, which is very rare for us. It had a really fun conceit that made it feel special, which is the story that Jughead is writing. And it had a really shocking, gruesome cliffhanger, which really took the videotape mystery to the next level. So I thought, “You know what? Since we are cutting the season short, maybe the best thing to do is end with [Episode] 19, which is a really strong, fun episode, and then come back and have prom as our season premiere next season.” So we made that decision, and I’m feeling good about it.
TVLINE | Speaking of prom, there were a few things like that and graduation that we were expecting to see at the end of this season. So will those things get tacked on to Season 5?
Yeah, it felt like since we have such big events like prom and graduation, and we’d already written [Episodes] 21 and 22… they’re big, emotional episodes, and there’s a lot of stuff with the characters that we’re still playing out, so it felt like maybe what we’ll do is start with the last three episodes. After being with the kids at the high school for four years, you kind of don’t want to take graduation away from them. So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes.
TVLINE | We’ve reported that Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols are leaving the show at the end of the season. Since this is technically the end of Season 4, is this the last we’ll see of them, or will they be back for those three episodes?
No, they’ll be back for those. When this all went down, I reached out to all of the cast, and I reached out to Marisol and Skeet and said that we haven’t finished those stories, and we want to make sure that you guys have great sendoffs. I think Marisol knew what Hermione was going to do. I don’t think Skeet knew yet what F.P. was going to do. The truth of it is, and this isn’t a spoiler, but neither Hermione nor F.P. are being killed. So my hope is that they are a part of Riverdale in a real way as long as there’s a Riverdale.
TVLINE | This season’s Archie and Betty scenes set off such a frenzy within the fandom. Betty ultimately put a stop to their relationship before it started, but is that door really closed for good?
The answer is no. We’ve definitely not seen the last of that story. On a basic level, Veronica and Jughead don’t know anything that happened in the bunker or in Archie’s garage, so there’s still absolutely that to play. I think coming out of last week’s episode, it was clear that, whatever had happened with Archie, Betty was reinvesting in her relationship with Jughead, and Archie was sort of more lost and confused than ever. So they were basically in very different places about it, and I think we’re going to play that. In [Episode] 19, because it’s such a fun episode and there’s a conceit in the story, it’s sort of status quo between the four of them. But definitely, there are major, major repercussions for what Betty and Archie did that go down at prom, in true teen drama fashion. So no, we haven’t seen the end of that story by a long shot.
Alright, Riverdale fans, it’s your turn: Give tonight’s Season 4 finale a grade in our poll, and then grab a a booth in the comments below to share your thoughts.
That was actually one of the better episodes of the season. That last shot was so creepy!
This episode actually pretty much made sense, so all in all it was a good episode.
Interesting that they will finish the final 3…Will that reduce the episode order for season 5 or will the 3 be in addition to season 5. It makes total sense that they will jump ahead in time as all arw heading in different directions, different schools, etc. So I assume they’ll jump after the final 3.
…. Madchen Amick directed a decent episode. It kept my attention and was one if the strongest episodes thus season.
It might depend on when dramas can resume production. There’s a good chance all scripted shows end up with less episodes (unless they are shorter runs to begin with), possibly excepting animation. And networks will want to recoup lost profits from ad revenue being down. But we can always hope we get extra Riverdale.
I’m gonna be blunt. Riverdale is trash lol. I only tune in when I see Betty and Archie crumbs being thrown again because that’s the only likable thing about this show.
I am still confused by Mr. honey regardless if he wrote a recommendation letter for jughead And help to get kids scholarships he doesn’t explain his canceling of prom the yearbook refusing to let Archie walk in graduation yeah and what he was doing in the back room of that video store and with Mr. honeys voiceover playing over the video does that mean he really is the bad guy after all I am confused also besides Jughead and Betty who had access to jughead story to be able to film that reenactment of his story And it looks like somebody’s been living in the cabin Mr. honey wasn’t living there Charles isn’t living there cher is still in prison and what was with the projector and the homemade movie screen and then there being a video for them to watch and while jake had mentioned a project reminded him of the driving it made me think of The Home movies of betties father the black hood
I think that is the questions we all have which makes this episode a good cliff hanger. I did like Mr Honey as a (well intentioned-but misdirected) villian (Kerr Smith did a great job) I do hope he is not the Video guy, but not sure what he was doing in the video store back room. Someone must have hacked or cloned Jughead’s computer. Guess we’ll find out next season.
I haven’t watched in a bit, but I think it’s pretty funny when The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has more believable storytelling and character arcs/motivations than Riverdale.
I think the Archie and Betty storyloine is the best thing to happen on this show for years. I was surprised by their chemistry on screen and I’m actually rooting for a Riverdale couple for once, which is a teen drama aspect this show was lacking for me. For next season I’d like to see more of relationships and friendships and less crazy plots (although I did enjoy the Black Hood mysteryand the season 1 mystery).
No as if they’ll never have the same understanding and connection as bughead team bughead all the way what a full 4 seasons of a true love gone to waste think abt how much they have in common the investigations and everything it would ruin riverdale all together I think they just miss the fact there growing up that’s all plus Betty burns her diaries and regecys Archie plus since then from the last episode Archie seems happy with Veronica and jug seems happy with Betty there’s no way riverdale would be the same if barchie was to become a thing
I’m sorry but if so will prep is trying to clean house and restore its reputation the second I find out about the scandal that got Mr. Honeycutt fired from Riverdale he can kiss that job goodbye
Riverdale really stepped it’s game up this season. That finale was probably one of the best episodes too! Good job Madchen!
What if the video tape voyeur is Jellybean (or she at least has ties)? Think about it…she’s always around and on the sidelines, getting scolded and rushed out of the room when “the adults” are talking and reviewing the tapes. She hand delivers them after being “left on the porch” and has direct ties to the storyline’s major players. Her getting sent away to get some help after a reveal could be a good excuse for FP to leave and get his daughter away from the craziness of the town/better parent her, not to mention deal with his apparent failures as Sheriff and a father. And it takes both of them off the board to make a time jump after high school if they go that route. Just sayin’…
I’m hoping the first 3 episodes are their final days as seniors and then they are leaped into the future as adults for episode 4. I’m ready to see them grown up at least moving forward the show can make more sense because the things they have done from season 2 to 4 has not been high school like.
I just want the triangle to be over coz I do not want bughead to end as they have a true connection which no one else has with their crimes and it’s obvious Betty truly lives hug as she shuts Archie down the fans of riverdale would be crushed if bughead ended Ik I will be and probably never watch riverdale again as their realationship really makes the fans happy
If bughead ends I’m never watching this show again yes it’s abt archies comments but their realationship impacts the fans by a lot by introducing barchie will ruin everything put all the bughead chemistry in the bin for nothing Archie and Betty will never have the same effect on the public as her and Jughead as there connection is so strong and understand each other truly and it’s obvious how in live they are me and my friends have all agreed if that ends for barchie we’d never watch riverdale again what a full 4 seasons of a special couple for nothing the show would be a joke
Plz whatever u do do not replace bughead for barchie u don’t understand how much people connect to that couple and how happy they make people feel seeing their realationship in riverdale as if it was reality they have something else it is true love if barchie is introduced it would be a waste of 4 seasons of true romance they just miss there childhood that is all u can tell from the last episode Veronica and Archie and happy and Betty is more than happy with jug after rejecting Archie coz she knows what is love and what is just misses of childhood
Imagine all the investigating and the fun crime experiences without the connection of bughead in between it it wouldn’t be the same
Riverdale would not be the same without bughead
Bughead all the way barchie would never have the same connection as bughead
This triangle better end and with bughead together I can tell the difference between love and just missing childhood habits Archie just misses them joking around and getting married but Betty really lives jug she burnt her diaries for him and rejected archie
I swear to god if the triangle ends up with barchie I’m never watching riverdale again a full 4 seasons gone to waste for a couple that have no chance winning over the public like bughead did 💖💖💖💖
And I want to make an idea the one thing I have been waiting for is for Jughead to be there when Betty is suffering like if she got stabbed or shot I think it would be cute to see how angry and upset Jughead gets over her being hurt but he’s never there like with the phone calls or when she was at the sisters he just says I’m sorry I wasn’t there but I think it would be cute to see how much jug truly lives Betty through the way he reacts when something happens to her
I think everyone would live to see Jughead watch or find something bad has happened to Betty and like rushes her to hospital and starts crying over it saying he wishes he was there and telling her how much he lives her and her on edge of dying or something but obviously doesn’t die coz remember how he reacted abt fang imagine how he’d react with Betty it would be the most cutest scene ever
This was a strong episode reminiscent of season 1. Clearly Madchen Amick picked up a few vibes from her time on Twin Peaks.
Things that were great about the episode:
– a genuine air of creepiness and menace (even better than the Black Hood, Farm, Gargoyle King or Stonewall prep storylines)
– a great mystery – which may involve our fave teens as murderers!
– tight storytelling – the parallels between Jughead’s story and current events builds tension
– light comedic lines
– participation of characters such as Reggie
– twists and red herrings – is Honey the bad guy or just misunderstood? Well done Kerr Smith
– our teens playing up their dark sides – twisted Bughead (although it’s just in Jug’s story) – great job Lilli Reinhardt, you can act really evil, I’m scared of bad Betty
– parents coming together – thank goodness no gangster Hiram this episode
– a sense of the stakes rising at the end of the episode
Some say Riverdale has lost its touch but I think we’re back in fine form.
I hated the archie and betty romance a really hope that it doesnt ruin bughead because that is literally my favorite part of this show.
