In the latest TV show ratings, NBC’s bicoastal and mostly virtual broadcast of the 78th Golden Globes on Sunday night not at all surprisingly delivered one of the gala’s smallest audiences in … well, a while.
Averaging 6.9 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating in updated Nielsen finals, the Globes were down more than 60 percent from last year’s numbers — and delivered their smallest audience since 1995 (which was the last year that TBS hosted the show before turning it over to NBC).
TVLine readers gave the ceremony an average grade of “C-,” while cohosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s monologue earned a “B.”
Last year’s Ricky Gervais-hosted telecast, which led out of an NFC Wild Card Playoff game, averaged 18.3 million viewers and a 4.3 rating, marking eight- and 12-year lows. The 2019 Globes, hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, reported 18.6 million viewers and a 5.2 rating, which was on par with 2018, when the Seth Meyers-hosted Globes posted 19 million viewers and a 5.0 rating.
Elsewhere, in fast nationals….
ABC | AFV (5.7 mil/0.8) and American Idol (6.5 mil/1.0) were steady, while The Rookie (3.4 mil/0.4) tied its demo low.
CBS | The Equalizer (7.6 mil/0.7) and NCIS: LA (5.7 mil/0.5) each dipped, while New Orleans (4.9 mil/0.5) was steady.
THE CW | Batwoman (477K/0.1) and Charmed (340K/0.1) were steady in the demo, though the former slipped to a new audience low.
FOX | Cherries Wild (2.5 mil/0.5) and Bless the Harts (1 mil/0.3) were up, while The Simpsons (1.3 mil/0.4), The Great North (1.1 mil/0.3), Bob’s Burgers (1 mil/0.3) and Family Guy (1.1 mil/0.4) were all down, with many if not all of the latter bunch hitting demo lows.
The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our daily-ish ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increases in delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms. These Live+Same Day numbers instead are used to illustrate any trends or high/low superlatives. Happy Fun Ball may stick to certain types of skin.

Bob’s Burgers is so good and I’m loving The Great North. I’m saddened to see these shows slip so low. And FOX has been ordering so many more animated series too.
But they order to many and then have to cancel shows like Bless the Harts or Duncanville to make room.
I thought Bless the Hart’s was renewed.
Yes Bless was renewed for season 2 in 2019. We are now in season 2 and there are no signs that the show is going to be renewed for season 3.
Bob’s Burgers makes a lot of money in merchandising like the Simpsons and with the movie coming out, its stock is only going to rise.
I think people just aren’t interested anymore.
I can’t remember the last time I saw an article about viewership of an awards show that didn’t indicate that ratings fell again. Celebrity award shows seem to be a dying practice.
Glad Bless the Harts went up
It’s likely not getting a third season.
How is Stanley Tucci doing with his Italy series?
Renewed last week 👍
Chris Noth’s ‘hold my glass’ moment on the Equalizer was priceless.
… it really was.
While you (the TVLine crew) were all watching the Globes, you missed an amazingly awful episode of The Rookie last night. It was truly one of the worst things to air this year. Can’t wait to see Q’s this week! It deserved to reach a low in the ratings.
I really like the ROOKIE I just think this was a filler episode. Looks like it was filmed pretty early on and they decided to ir it before the show went on a month hiatus.
I totally agree- a wasted hour!
Because no one wants to watch how those rich narcissists will pad themselves on the back for being so awesome. And they are too stupid, tone deaf and self-obsessed to understand it.
So they will embarrass themselves until viewership will fall to 200 000 and 0.0 in demo. Then channels will finally cancel those awards shows by stop producing and airing them.
And then those celebrities will gather in their mansions and continue to give each other awards, streaming on Instagram live because they cant help themselves. )))
Now imagine future Oscar ratings. With zero interest from public and no one watched a single movie nominated.
No one forces you to watch awards shows, so no need to think so hard about it. The real reasons have a lot to do with theaters being closed this year so there weren’t a lot of films that reached a wide enough audience to want to tune in.
You guys are so delusional. Do you think any of the right wing elites are going through what you do. Do you think Trump is one of you and cares about you. He was born of privilege. How much is he worth yet still asking you for money to help him with fill his coffers using his lies. Talking about Narcissists retreating to their mansions. He doesn’t even pay taxes like us or pay his debts to everyday ordinary hardworking people who provide services for him. He has been fleecing people all his life and now he is doing it to the whole country. He is just playing on your fears and for some using their blind rascist hatreds to make him seem like them. He is not even Blue Lives Matter, Mr. Law and Order. His only genuine concern is for himself. Stop believing the rhetoric and the lies, and look at his actions. He only does and says things that will benefit his need to money, power and relavance. STOP THE STEAL, the steal of your hearts, minds and your souls.
👏👏👏
They’re too far gone to see the irony. They think Trump and Co actually care. Award shows have been doing bad for a minute now.
Good God what Trump has to do with low ratings of an award show? ))))
Do you people are not even allowed to have your own thoughts on things? In order to be good leftie – you have to think and say what your left wing rich elite tells you to? You must watch those awards shows to 4 hours, loudly laugh at unfunny jokes and then write on Internet that you enjoyed it and praise their stupid “powerful speeches”? ))))
What will happened when you will refuse to do it? They will cancel you and take away your kids and bank accounts? )))
Dear Bennington, you can be a good and abiding leftie and hate celebrities and their awards shows! Stop being sheep and blindly follow every order that your masters tell you to. This is what happened in Soviet Union, happens now in Russia, North Korea, China etc.
You willingly put yourself in cages. Being free means you can have different thoughts on things. Stop blindly follow what white rich elite tells you to. Why on earth would you do that is beyond me. All of them (celebrities and left political elite) are superrich and privileged people. They look down on you and think that they are better and smarter than you.
Once again – you dont have to put down your “left wing communist members ticket”. You can hate entitled celebrities and still be leftie. You dont have to watch those stupid awards show and pretend you like them. )))
Truth, good god.
It’s called lithium baby. Take a pound of it and get some rest, and if some creepy socialist comes around you again offering you some candy to get in his van, just say no and run away.
The viewing has taken a hit because people are tired of politics and social agendas being promoted on television. I watch television to take a break from normal life and have an entertainment break. In some instances characters are changing because of the sensitivity around the country. People get butt hurt too easily. Grow up.
Or, you know, it is about RESPECTING other people. Nothing “butt hurt” about simple civility and respect of other people and situations.
You’ve hit the nail on the head, Wendy! Funny how some people will shout for civility in certain situations yet complain people are getting butthurt too easily.
Says the one who’s “butt hurt” over awards shows. LOL.
Sounds like you are getting butt hurt too easily by things changing. Take your own advice, grow up.
Politics, social issues, etc have always been part of the fabric of television and movies.
No surprise GGs plummeted in ratings. Pandemic-closed theatres made moviegoing impossible. It just is not the same streaming. And who can keep track of all those TV series!?!? Really, the product and the people are not so familiar and THAT makes awards shows less appealing. I feel like a last-minute invitee to the party. As for the politics and speechifying, I tire of it too. I am older, yes, and I just want to see accessible product in media I know and understand and enjoy without the judgment of celebrities who sometimes seem out of touch and/or poised to fall from their pedestals i our harsh social media world. I miss the fun and sparkle… and artistry.
Good… it was a horrible “show”!
Yeah, I can only speak for myself but as somebody who used to love the Oscars and even the Golden Globes growing up, I’m so turned off by them lately. I remember loving watching Billy Crystal just have fun out there, going back and forth trading hilarious insults with Jack Palance. Sure there would be the occasional celebrity who got all political and everyone just rolled their eyes and moved on. But now it feels like the whole point of the ceremony is to virtue signal and/or proclaim political points of view typically coated in hypocrisy. If I have to hear one more celebrity who just flew in on their private jet talk about how we have to do something about global warming I’m going to barf.
Another awards show tanking in the ratings. Perhaps the entertainment industry will realize, in these times when many are struggling, few want to see a bunch of rich, self-absorbed celebrities congratulating themselves…
More importantly, the discussion should be about the undue influence of the Golden Globes when only 87 people of the foreign press vote in determining the nominees and winners.
87!
I just have lost interest in the awards shows bc it seems like we see the same group of people at them routinely, and at each one too. Whoever wins at GG and SAG does at the Oscar’s and Emmys etc… I might watch if some of the great lesser-known under-rated actors out there got their due, but that never happens unfortunately. We need a show for them. 👍🏻
Is everything, everywhere always supposed to boil down to political differences? Enough nonsense.
Viewership was down on the GG because a COVID version of an awards show simply doesn’t work. It was just awful. I bailed about 15 minutes after the opening. If the Oscars are doing the same thing, and most likely are, I’ll just skip it entirely, since even the opening won’t be worth it.
COVID, schmovid! I think interest in awards shows is dropping because they are boring and there are far too many of them. One would think people staying at home because of the pandemic would watch more TV, not less. Maybe quality has something to do with it.
TV awards shows are going the way of soap operas…DOA.
I watched 4 episodes of new season of The Rookie and I’m dying from second hand embarrassment every time Brandon Rouths character shows up.
I just press FastForward button to all of his scenes now.
Rookie was surprisingly a good light hearted show about cops. Fantasy like all Hollywood criminal shows. But it was fun to watch.
Now all cops shows are forced to include “white raHcIst cop who hates bLaCks for no reason”. I’m sure Brooklyn 99 will create one too. Just to show how “woke and self-aware” they are.
And its so cringy to watch. This looks so embarrassingly bad and fake. You could just see how writers have no idea how to execute it naturally and were given a task “write in RaHcIsT cop” and they try by giving him motivations: “he hates blacks for no reason and is walking around telling everyone he does and attacking law abiding good black people”.
While in reality all those “bad cops” were actually shooting real life criminals, with numerous arrests for robberies, murders and woman abuse. But stereotypical “RaHciSt cop” from cop shows will now be walking and attacking black college students or single moms who work two jobs.
Im just gonna FastForward all those scenes until show will resolve that “obligatory story line” and move to normal pace. Otherwise Im gonna roll my eyes and laugh the whole time
