An extremely heated moment — and not necessarily the good kind — would have led to MacGyver and Riley sharing their first kiss, had the CBS drama been renewed for Season 6.
As previously revealed in TVLine’s exclusive, post-series finale Q&A with showrunner Monica Macer, the discovery that Desi’s onetime fiancé is in fact alive — in an early, Black Hawk Down-like Season 6 episode — would have paved the way for the dissolution of her relationship with Mac.
But what would have then (and finally!) brought Mac and Riley (played by Lucas Till and Tristin Mays) together?
What if I told you that The Brink, as in Riley’s merry band of young female hackers, would play a key role?
As previously reported, at the start of Season 6, Matty (played by Meredith Eaton) was going to send Riley undercover with the nefarious organization that is looking to use the nanobot tech to create Manchurian Candidate-like operatives.
To establish Riley’s cover, the team’s resident hacker was going to ask that Brink members Brooklyn and Sara (Harlan Drum and Emerson Paige) be added to the Phoenix team on a full-time basis. When Phoenix financer Russ balked, “that was going to cause a rift between him and Riley, leading Riley to resign — but this was all planned by Matty,” Macer tells TVLine. “That’s how we were going to put [Riley, Brooklyn and Sara] undercover, because Riley would say, ‘I get to bring my whole team with me to this new job.'”
That is when Mac himself would weigh in. And truths would get told.
>Riley’s resignation “would lead to a knockdown, drag out, huge argument between her and Mac,” Macer says, “and that was ultimately going to end up with them confessing the truths about how they felt, how they feel about one another. And it was supposed to end with a kiss, too.”
To recap: “Desi (Levy Tran) would get back together with her ex-fiancé, Evan,” Macer said, while “Mac and Riley, they’re the hero couple. That was always the endgame for us; we just didn’t know the end was coming at the end of [Season 5].”
I thought they’d probably reveal Desi’s ex somehow survived and wasn’t killed after all. CBS released several long term shows this season. I really thought MacGyver had one more season left in it and wondered if that “spinoff vs reboot” lawsuit lead to its cancelation.
As much as I love all this info I sort of wish they had waited a while to reveal it. Gives me zero hope of the show ever coming back if they’re willing to spoil the entire next season.
This is all in the first few episodes, not the entire season. There is so much more they had planned outside of these storylines. These are just teases that bring publicity to the cancellation and the #SaveMacGyver campaign. I am all for it.
yeah, no… that’s not how tv works, pal. Unless they plan to ditch the ex-fiancé, the mac&riley relationship and russ’ baby, then it’s spoiled. It doesn’t matter if the missions change, the basics are there and are now ruined.
mac and riley should’ve never gotten together, they were like jack’s children!!
I agree Mac and riley should not be together, Jack was like there father ,I like Mac with Desi
Riley was like Jack’s Daughter but Mac was not like his son. Jack & Mac were like brothers.
Mac, Riley and Boz were all like Jack’s kids. They were like siblings, to be quite honest. I wish they had kept it that way.
With that reasoning orphans growing up together won’t be able to marry later in adulthood because they were “like siblings.
They were all ”like” but they WEREN’T his kids. Trying to force “incenstuos” interpretation among people/roles that aren’t DNA/blood-related is nuts. Those three were really good friends they WEREN’T siblings, brothers and sisters don’t behave like they did; only those w/o siblings misunderstand the interactions.
Could not disagree more. They belong together.Do not like tattoos, especially on girls.
I am so hoping that someone will surprise us and bring back MacGyver with the storyline scoop j just read it would be awesome.
Well, that’s me being glad that it ended with season 5. Making everything about a will they-won’t they relationship is not what the show is about, yet it’s all it’s talked about. Not for me.
Right there with you! It has truly ruined the show. The obsessive behaviour of the fans didn’t help, either…
So happy those stupid shippers didn’t end up getting what they want. Made the cancellation a little less disappointing
With everything that they have spoiled so far, there is no way of saving the show now. There is just too many things against it. And now the fandom is putting money on CBS’ pockets by streaming everywhere, all for nothing. It is sad.
Well maybe if there were to put them together sooner the show might have still gone on . But there’s no way to tell how many fans stop watching because they got tired of the will they or won’t they . To put this info out now about what season six was to be about is kind of sad . It’s over you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube . I know there lots of fans who watch because they like the characters but when you keep dragging the will they won’t they stuff it turns fans off . I know it’s kind of a tough spot to figure out when to put them together but most fans today don’t like to Waite . With all the Chanel’s out there along with the services there a fine line you need to walk to keep fans or they jump ship . To keep saying we were going to do this or that is just sour grapes just learn from the experience and next time don’t Waite to long to put people together .
Try using spellcheck.
I actually like the will they wont they tension myself. It is GREAT for fanfic writers to play with.
But then again, maybe it is the Drama/Procedural audience vs the Nerdy/Scifi/Conspiracy audience that is the difference. (I am the latter)
Stargate SG-1 played that game with the audience for 10 years, two made-for-TV movies and even one season of the spinoff and the fans held on.
The drama shows, on the other hand, do have different audiences. Donut from Veronica Mars was written out because that fanbase were clearly not able to wait. (when TWoP was the fandom playground and TPTB participated too the interaction did shape the results)
Wise words.
Are they looking at a spinoff with the Brink? Where MacGyver stars can guest star and get closure to their stories
Maybe a spin-off on the CW might be interesting.
I started this show because it was so intriguing it helped me to escape the reap world if just for a little bit I was hoping mac and Riley got together but no dice that just broke my heart
I feel for everyone that lost their jobs but I’m so glad that storyline never happened.
the ratings would’ve been EVEN WORSE if these plots ever saw the light. let the show die.
This hurts. Please renew the show. Ugh.
Mac and Riley would be an excellent couple love the idea and hope it happens. She is not his sister she is the love of his life. I like Desi a lot but not with Mac maybe Russ.
6
I wish another network picks up series! 6 million viewers? Whoa!
This is why you don’t wait to put couples that have potential together. Enough with this endless slow burn nonsense. Now nobody gets what they want because the show is cancelled.
So glad that did not happen. Riley was like a sister. Mac was good with Desi.
Hi TVLine team, quick questions:
did CBS cancel their lowest watched shows?
Is it possible to see the rankings of their scripted shows this season?
Was MacGyver one of the worst performing shows in terms of viewership?
Thanks!
Now I think that the cancellation was a good thing.
What is wrong with you folks at CBS every time you all get a hit the older people like you take it off the air what is wrong with you
I really wish they would keep MacGyver going. Very disappointed that its been canceled
No, no, no, why end MacGyver????? It is so good, bring it back please.
Why does anyone really care? Just like every other good series that has been cancelled by CBS in the past, they leave everyone hanging without any thought about the fans.
Not to Burst anyone’s Bubble on the idea of
“I hope ___ Picks up the show for Season 6.”
but the Series is Produced by CBS (and occasional Corporate friend Lionsgate) if they saw enough value to sell it to Competitors ABC/NBC/Fox they’d also see the Value in Moving it to Paramount + (as was recently announced is their plan for Seal Team and Clarice) if only as a Series of ‘movies’ to get people to come behind the pay wall…
(The Original was a Paramount Production, which is why this New Series was on CBS in the first place, rather than ABC like the Original, as CBS and Paramount had since become corporate family)
I can’t believe CBS is canceling MacGyver. The show and fans deserve a proper ending! I hope Netflix picks it up for at least a Season 6.
