Don’t call it a reboot. [pmc_inline_gallery]
That was the plea from How I Met Your Father co-creator Isaac Aptaker during the Hulu comedy’s virtual appearance at Tuesday’s Television Critics Association winter press tour. “People keep referring to the show as a ‘reboot,’ and it’s not a reboot,” he said, before referring to HIMYF as a “standalone sequel.”
“It’s set in the world of the previous show, but it’s really its own thing,” the executive producer clarified. “That said, we love How I Met Your Mother,” and original series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, as well as original director/EP Pamela Fryman, are all “very involved” in the making of HIMYF. “There are going to be lots of little rewards for people who love the original if they stick with us.”
Premiering Tuesday, Jan. 18 with its first two episodes, the HIMYM follow-up “catapults us back to the year 2022,” where Hilary Duff’s Sophie and her close-knit group of friends — Jesse (Veronica Mars‘ Chris Lowell), Valentina (grown-ish‘s Francia Raisa), Charlie (The Royals‘ Tom Ainsley), Ellen (Space Force‘s Tien Tran) and Sid (God Friended Me‘s Suraj Sharma) — “are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options,” according to the official logline. Fryman, who directed nearly every episode of HIMYM, is once again behind the camera on HIMYF.
“One thing that I can take away from it, having been on How I Met Your Mother for so long, is that this is not How I Met Your Mother — and I loved How I Met Your Mother,” Fryman said. “This is How I Met Your Father, and it is so spectacular in its own right…. From the first day on stage with masks on, we started rehearsing and instantly knew we had something.”
Added Duff, who is also a producer, “I think it’s important to know that we are our own show… We’re trying to create something original [while] stealing a few things from them that worked really well.”
‘HIMYM Universe’ if there is no crossover between the two it doesn’t really matter where it is set…
We will probably see peripheral characters like the wife’s roommate and the crazy stalker girlfriend. Maybe even the girl from the bar. Little things that will be Easter eggs from the original.
After that bs ending for the og show I’m certainly not spending years of my life watching another show those two weirdoes are involved with. But hey, good luck to the rest of you guys
I’ve never really understood how people hated the finale _that_ badly. Yes it could have been better, but the whole story of how Ted met the mother was never really what the show was about, it was really just a story-telling device. The show as whole was still incredibly decent and the finale doesn’t take away from that.
The show was literally called “How I Met Your Mother.”
So? Doesn’t change the fact that it was merely a story-telling device. The show was really about the characters and their lives, the mother was just the end-game.
But she wasn’t the end game. Robin was.
I agree with the original poster. I have never seen a show that I love so much get ruined so badly by its final moments. The finale was horrible. The ending was crushing if you follow the show. It was a total slap in the face of everybody who spent all that time watching such a wonderful program.
It was a complete bonehead decision. And because of that decision, I retain the bitterness of that finale, and I have no desire to watch this new show. And I would’ve beven all in if the finale actually lived up to the title of the original shell.
There have been many good to great shows with bad finales. This is the only one that ruins the whole rest of the series to the point that it makes reruns unwatchable. Worst finale ever!
Part of the reason behind the hate was fans had guessed how it was going to end like around Season 2 or 3 online just in going “What’s the worst way they could end this” and people’s answers just flat out nailed the ending dead on in the process of course long before it was aired.
And the fans online had all basically said “that would absolutely be the worst ending they could come up with”.
And then that’s EXACTLY what the ending was. And you had people saying for years in messages posts they would hope it would never be that ending.
THIS! Thank you!
The ending was perfect. Cluelessly cry harder you pathetic weirdo man-child.
It was far from perfect. Spending a whole season leading up to a marriage that ends soon after, combined with “it’s Robin he really wants,” after how many “I’m ABSOLUTELY over Robin. For GOOD” episodes?
What’s your definition of “perfect”? Or do you just like to snark? (You’ll probably just resort to calling me “Karen.”)
I didn’t love the ending, especially with Cristin Milioti, but that doesn’t make rest of the series stink. Just as the GoT finale didn’t make the rest of that show stink. Some of the fan hate for TV shows gets over the top.
But it wasn’t “Robin he really wants”. Ted and Robin were totally wrong for each other at that point in their lives.
Ted totally and completely loved Tracy. The point of the ending was that real life doesn’t have a “happily ever after”. Loved ones only have a limited time together and then they have to find a way to cope when they’re gone.
It was only after Tracy’s death and a significant amount of grieving time that Ted wanted to remarry and both he and Robin realised that all of the things that made them wrong for each other before were gone.
And also this!
I still hate that Robin and Barney didn’t work out, they really made me fall hard for that, and that does stink. But life happens! There’s still so many unforgettable moments in the series and in the final season too.
Plus Marshmallow and Lilly Pad were the only couple that ever really mattered anyway. ;)
Found the original producers account. Should it be CB-CT, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas?
I can’t see this lasting long even on Hulu. The original show worked cause of the cast and wanted Ted to find the Mother. This just sounds like the new main character is going to bang a bunch of guys and end up doing Maury and in the end fall in love with her male best friend.
So it was ago for Ted to sleep around New York on his search for love, but for the female equivalent it’s not? Double standard much? 🙄
They may as well hang out with a certain former Canadian teen pop star. Cobie Smulders is only 5 years older than Hilary Duff (and 2 years older than Chris Lowell).
Oh, Hilary Duff is a producer! You know that the show will be amazing since she’ll bring her incredible producer skills to the table.
I love you TVLine but did we learn anything bc new here? I mean, haven’t they always said it was a sequel? Did anyone think it was a reboot? You tricked me because I thought you were actually going to say what the tie in is lol
It had previously been referred to as a “reboot” or a “reimagining,” which implied a gender-flipped remake that stood entirely on its own (a la Netflix’s One Day at a Time, or ABC’s Wonder Years) and shared no continuity with the original.
>> There are going to be lots of little rewards for people who love the original if they stick with us.”
LOL no
Put me in the minority once again, but I loved the ended of the OG, and honestly, this is the biggest premiere of a new show in years to me.
Even if you didn’t love the ending of the original, how does it make you hate this one already?? The writers aren’t even the same.
Unless that Easter Egg is one of the new cast going to visit there uncle Ted in the insane asylum and it is explained he was committed after he went crazy when his wife died and to cope created a made up reality in his head in which he married one of his best friends wife I have no intent to watch this show.
Ok, this one at least made me laugh a little. If you’re gonna hate, at least be funny like this person :)
Brilliant. He could be in there looking at a snow globe.
Or just have him come out of the shower.
Man HIMYM was good. Why couldn’t they just leave it at that? I want more original content. No more sequels, please…
Personally, I loved the ending to HIMYM. Ted and Robin were my favorite couple. I think the bitterness comes from the fact that a lot of the fans fell in love with Barney and Robin as a couple. NPH and Cobie had so much chemistry together that it pretty much ruined the ending for a lot of people. IMHO, Barney and Robin were way too much alike to ever work. Ted balanced Robin out. They were meant to be together. By the way, I never give enough love to Pamela Fryman for all the incredible episodes she directed. She created a lot of magical moments for HIMYM. So, thank you, Miss Fryman.
