The Resident co-creator Amy Holden Jones knows that the Fox series’ long-term future is ultimately out of her hands. But as the medical drama embarks on its sixth season — bringing inevitable speculation about the show’s endgame — Jones, at least, feels that its creative pulse is still plenty strong.
“I consider it to be one of the biggest triumphs of The Resident that what we’re doing is showing people’s evolution — the lives of being doctors over time,” the EP tells TVLine, when asked if the show’s creative team sees the upcoming episodes as a potential stopping point. “I watched ER when it was on years ago, and I never found it got old. They changed characters, new doctors came in, ones we thought we couldn’t live without left, just as it’s happened to us. It reinvented over and over and over again and remained fresh. [The Resident] has that potential.”
Of course, Jones concedes that the series is at the mercy of TV executives and business decisions: The Resident has regularly been on the renewal bubble each spring, and its pickup for Season 6 came notably later than usual during this May’s Upfronts week, due to behind-the-scenes negotiations.
“The fate of the show is somewhat caught up in the fact that it’s owned by Disney but shown by Fox, which is not an ideal scenario… And that’s also tied up with the fate of the network drama, which, God only knows, at this point,” Jones admits with a laugh. “The ratings are incredibly stable. We have a very core audience that just loves us, and if we have a chance, I’m sure we will continue to grow. It has the potential to go on and on, but whether it’ll be given that shot, I don’t know.”
And though The Resident has had its share of cast turnover — including the exit of pivotal player Emily VanCamp last season — Jones believes that its procedural elements still make the show accessible to new viewers in Season 6.
“It’s my fondest hope that people will realize you can pick it up at any time. If you started the season and had never seen one before, you would have no trouble following and engaging and learning who they are,” she continues. “I hope it keeps going.”
The Resident returns for Season 6 on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8/7c.
Its not original and its often repetative. Those twins are awful. Its a dead show.
“Its a dead show.”
Clearly not.
*It’s
And, it’s obviously not a dead show.
I just binge watched all 5 seasons. What a fantastic show. Great cast. It can go on and on. If Greys is still on and it’s long past it’s prime. The resident is much better IMO. renew renew renew
It should end. This one of the reasons why network television will never dominant award season again. Bad writing, no longer taking risks, too many episodes a season and milking the cow past her sell date.
It’s time to close this one out. Everyone anyone cares about is happy or at least content. There are no good villians. It’s getting boring. Medical dramas are recycling the same stories they get from real life. Good run but wrap it up.
A great show with a superior cast. Other than the twins I like all of the characters. It’s the only network show I always watch. I hope it continues.
The Resident is one of my favorite shows because of the writers. Working in a hospital I know that the stories are interesting and getting a glimpse of the doctors and what they go through is touching and true. A hospital is a working adventure everyday. Thanks and please keep this show alive.
Love this show. One of my favorites that I look forward to watching. Would of liked to see Emily Van camp stay on the show. Great chemistry between her & Conrad. Also, great cast. Hope this show moves forward & does not get cancelled!! Good luck. 🍀
Without nic the resident is not the same. Her and Conrad made it. I wish she could have stayed and her pregnant with baby no. 2 at the end. I hate Conrad and Billie together.
We absolutely Love The Resident, the diverse cast & Medical procedures. We never watch. FOX with one exception, The Resident. Wish CBS would air it as they
have no medical shows. Since we never watch Greys Anatomy, ABC would be apptopriate.
Dr. Conrad Hawkins is a hero and I wish he was a doctor in real life. The Resident is too good to be a TV Show!
The resident is the very best show on TV in my opinion. I hope it goes on for many more seasons.
I’ve read all the comments. Into those who think this show should and don’t know what good TV shows are they just talk to make themselves relevant. I’ve watched all five past seasons from day one. The resident is one of my favorite shows I look forward to watching it each and every Tuesday. There is a lot of potential for the characters on the resident I look forward to watching season six and many more seasons to come.
I just Adore THE Resident.
It is very overwhelming, watching What It’s like to be a front line hero.
The Resident is an outstanding medical drama which is not only fairly accurate in its presentation but is a show that you can pick up on at any point and still have an enjoyable viewing experience! The cast is very skillful and believable and is quite diverse. It not only has a vast tv audience, but also has numerous groups on social media with large followings of their own! I agree with Amy-It has the potential to allow for many future stories and I can even see some possible spin-offs! One of the best shows going on tv in my view!
Season 6 so far of the resident has been so bad it’s not worth renewing there are two political to watch I’m going to watch the episode where there’s the wedding after that probably not anymore if you’re going to shove political stuff down my throat I don’t want to watch it should have ended at season 5 not to mention the twins are awful Cade and her dad are ruining the show who wants to watch a pill popping doctor
