Fans who rejoiced in Esther’s eventual happy ending in the Sanditon Season 2 finale may not have realized it, but it was the character’s swan song.
TVLine has confirmed that Charlotte Spencer, who has played Esther for two seasons, will not be returning for the PBS period hit’s upcoming third season. The news comes in the wake of the actress signing on to star in the new BBC/Paramount+ drama The Gold.
As for Spencer’s Sanditon character Esther Babington, showrunner Justin Young recently told Decider, “I think where we leave her at the end of Season 2 she’s got everything she’s ever wanted. She’s happy, married, and now she has a child that she adores, so I think that’s the end of Esther’s story as far as I’m concerned.”
“I’ve always said with respect to this show, the way we built it is that, like a novel,” the EP added. “We have to honor that characters have finite stories.”
Sandition‘s Season 2 finale aired on April 24 on PBS. Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2023.
Are you sad to hear Charlotte Spencer‘s Esther won’t be back for Sanditon Season 3? Are you satisfied with the way her story ended? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
I figured she wouldn’t be back with how her characters story arc ended in season 2. I’ll miss her character, but I’m glad she got everything she wanted.
I liked that she found a good partner in Lord Babbington and that she adopted the baby she desired.
I absolutely loved Charlotte’s Portrayal of Esther. It’s one of the reasons I tuned in. She Is a great actress and I will definitely watch “The Gold”.
I think this is the best ending and a good departure point for the character. However I will miss Charolette. I think she is an extremely talented actress.
This makes sense especially since the actor who played her husband wasn’t able to film while they were filming the two seasons last year. They’re happy and now have a child now just off-screen.
I’m so sad to hear that Charlotte Spencer won’t be back as Esther Babington. She surprisingly became the highlight of Sanditon season 2, with extremely strong acting she really became Esther. Her strength, beauty and wit were very Austen like and I will greatly miss her. I’d like to watch a whole series about she, Babington, and baby George…we can dream, can’t we? But I’ll try to catch her in The Gold somehow from the states. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to this lovely show!
I love Charlotte Spencer who plays Esther She is a great actress and very beautiful I am sad we wont see her character anymore but i wish her the best in her knew adventure
I really believe Esther’s part has e ded perfect
She’s my favorite character in the show, so on the one hand, I’m sad she won’t be in it anymore, but on the other hand, so glad we won’t have to watch more terrible things happen to her!
Esther was my most hated character at first but became one of my favorites by the end. Charlotte Spencer brought so much depth to the role and I loved that she got her happily ever after. At least they finished her story and didn’t leave us hanging!
Awww I’m SO TORN!! I love Charlotte’s portrayal of Esther! Strong, Witty, Quick to the Point kinda gal lol. Although I will miss her in Season 3, I LOVE that she got her happy ending. I do sincerely wish her the best in all future roles and will watch those as well 🤓
I was glad to see Esther have a happy ending to her once miserable life. It was good for her to leave on a good note, if she had to go.
It’s only my opinion but I thought the true love story of Sanditon season 1 was Esther and Babington! The intelligent way their relationship evolved right in front of us was, again just my opinion, more Austen-like, than Sidlotte. I was even hoping, as things grew very dire for Esther in season 2, that somehow Babington would swoop in to rescue her, although I had read that Mark Stanley was not available. I will miss their characters but thank you writers for the happy ending Esther deserved!
Yes! I so agree! 😭
I will miss Esther but im glad she has a child and a happy marriage i wish Charlotte all the best hope yo see her in her knew adventures
Np,.I’m not satisfied..would like to see more of Esther
I am truly sad that Charlotte Spencer is not returning. An excellent actress. She played Esther well! After all everyone deserves a happier ever after….
The dynamic between her and her brother and Aunt is the reason I watched the show. She’s an amazing actress. With Theo James gone as well not sure I will tune in next year the other actors were vanilla.
Ditto!
I am truly sad that Ester is returning! I will homely get to see her again
When I saw that scene of Esther’s back as she departed the room with baby in her arms in the last few minutes of the last episode of Season 2 I got that feeling of satisying “happy ever after” for Esther. Suffering, repentance and a resurrection of sorts. Good for her!!
Esther Babington is my favorite character in the show so I am sad to see her go but I am glad she got her happy ending. She is such a strong woman and her character changed for the better after her betrayal by her half brother, Edward. She is the reason I watch the series. I’m looking forward for more interesting characters in season 3. Thanks.
It did take me a while to not hate her. And now I think I will miss her…. But there are many other characters to enjoy in this show, there are many open questions for everybody so I’m curious for the next installation. And the location is so different!
I would have enjoyed watching Lord Babbington’s reunion with his wife. Their meeting was so funny. They had a rare chemistry.
I really wanted to see her surprise Lord Babington, then watch them ride away into the sunset. I really loved her character, she did have great lines. Hahaha
Let me just start off by saying first season was absolutely fantastic second season absolutely fantastic Charlotte could use a lot more backbone and I am happy with Esther and her happily ever after thank you.
I loved her and her happy ending. I for one am glad she’s far far away from her awful stepbrother.
Wanted to see Esther and her husband
Great ending for her it ended perfect for her roll. I’m happy she has moved on to other rolls. I wish her the best.
