At least somebody is going to be showing up for Yellowstone. While the Paramount Network hit’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan and most of the series’ regulars— including leading man Kevin Costner — were no-shows at Saturday’s PaleyFest panel, Matthew McConaughey is set to saddle up in an extension of the franchise, ViacomCBS president Chris McCarthy tells our sister site The Hollywood Reporter. What’s more, the McConaughey vehicle will move forward whether or not Costner returns to his role of John Dutton for the back half of Season 5.
You’ll recall that in February, a behind-the-scenes dispute with Costner surfaced over shooting schedules, with the Oscar winner allegedly wanting to limit himself to just one week of work on the remaining eight episodes of the season. It was reported to be a “source of frustration” for Sheridan and was allegedly “causing morale problems with [Costner’s] co-stars.” His attorney later called that report “an absolute lie.”

Filming for the back half of Season 5, which was supposed to air this summer, has not yet begun. There is still no date set for finishing the season, and McCarthy has no update on whether Costner will ride again as John (whose murder was being plotted by adopted son Jamie in the midseason finale). Yellowstone “wouldn’t be what it is today without Kevin,” is all that McCarthy says on the subject, “and we hope that that stays [the case] for a long time to come.”
What say you? Are you down for a Yellowstone spinoff with McConaughey in the lead?
Well clearly TVLine is taking sides against Costner as evidenced by how this article was written. Nothing about how Sheridan did not have scripts ready, and that he changed the shooting schedule at the last minute. Sheridan is over exposed and it has shown in his writing/storylines for his shows with plotlines dragging on or stalled out all together (Mayor Of Kingstown, 1923) I won’t be watching this.
Sheridan wrote the entirety of Season 1 of Mayor of Kingstown, but for Season 2 wrote 1 episode solo and had co-writing credits on the season premier and didn’t direct any episodes. He stepped back from that show almost entirely and it shows. While season 2 was pretty good, it was nowhere near as good as season 1 was.
He didn’t write any episodes of Tulsa King, Terrence Winter is basically the guy for that.
1883 and 1923 were written entirely by Sheridan and he did a good job with that shows.
The story about Sheridan not having scripts ready was from April 2022.
Do you have any sources for your claim that the scripts aren’t ready?
Agree with most of what you said. Wish they’d quit blaming Costner until they have all the facts. But will we ever get all the facts?
Mathew Mc is perfect…new series is about a dude ranch….
Ugh! He is literally unwatchable. I’ll be skipping this one…
Matthew McConaughey? He’s one of the best and biggest actors in the world. You’re crazy. Go watch the first season of True Detective. That’ll change your mind and if it doesn’t then I dunno what to tell you.
McConaughey makes me cry.
I get it, feel that way about Tom Cruise. Nothing against him as a person and couldn’t tell you why, but just can’t stand his acting. Aren’t we all wonderfully different :)
First I’ve heard of your version of what went down between Costner and Sheridan. Where are you getting your information from?
I think it’s strange that Costner wive commented she wanted him home more and wasn’t in favor of another Yellowstone season. Yet, now he is too busy because he is directing, writing and starting in his own western film.
I would hate to see Costner leave but I have to say I love Matthew McConaughey so I think it will be another exciting twist of the show.
From what I read, Matthew McConaughey would be starring in his own “new” Yellowstone show and not joining the original one. Unsure how they would tie it in to the original.
Can’t wait bring it on👍👍
I think that killing John off (naturally, not by murder) would be a really good move for the show. Doing it now means that it happens right at the moment when his kids are about to go nuclear and destroy their whole family. His death would mean that they step right up to the line, but don’t cross it, and it could be a jolt for all of them. His kids are all different aspects of John, at war with each other. He put them in those roles, whether they want to be there or not. It would be interesting to see his death actually help to heal the family overall, over the course of another season or two.
Honestly, I can’t see a resolution to Kevin Costner’s absence than killing John off. They have the setup all ready to go from last season anyway.
So the deal closed on this and then no one showed up for the panel? It reads like the studio is being shady and the cast isn’t having it. If my hard work had built a franchise and then they decided that work wasn’t good enough, I would be mad too.
Kevin Costnor Is Yellowstine. All the actors are great, but Kevin is the glue that holds it all together! Liz Devers
Matthew is a great asset to any tv series for sure, but without Kevin returning I’m not sure I can continue watching the best series out there since Dallas. That would have been like Larry Hagman leaving the show. I’m so hopeful that this outstanding show would go on for another 7 years at least!
I’ve been a true fan of Yellowstone, but these delays and back and forth of he said stuff has turned me off. Kevin Costner get over yourself and fulfill your obligations to contract and fans. Not a good look for you right now. That’s what happens when shows are successful and stars get full of themselves
McConaughey is probably the star of the 6666 show, set in Texas. It can’t just star Jimmy. The cowboys are going there, and some could be on, if Yellowstone ends
OH boy, just what we need another spin off. They can’t get the ones they have filmed, yet let’s add another one? What did 1923 teach us in the first season other than we now know the characters? And we are STILL waiting on Spencer to get home. Don’t care to watch prostitutes and Native Americans being mistreated. I love the Dutton family but too much time away from them. And Kevin Costner is Yellowstone, so he goes, so do we. I’d love to hear both sides of the story as to why the episodes aren’t already filmed. We will not be watching ANOTHER spin off, disenchanted now.
Not a fan of McConaughey but if he is part of 6666 and that is where the majority of the Yellowstone cast is going to be for a year at least, then I’ll watch. A little bit of McConaughey goes a really long way with me.
.
As for Yellowstone, I said ages ago that all they have to do is stick John Dutton at the Governor’s residence (and his scenes could be filmed in a day or not at all) and Kayce could continue running the ranch with the remaining cast. I simply don’t care about the behind the scenes stuff AT ALL because we don’t know the actual facts and probably never will. As far as I’m concerned they killed off the wrong Dutton at the start with Lee because Jamie is just getting so tiresome, predictable and downright soapy.
No I will not be wat watching yellowstone without Kevin Costner
This is one of the reasons that the original Yellowstone is having so much trouble. Stay on point Mr. Sheridan and get back to writing about it and not so many other series. We love Yellowstone so much and would appreciate it.
NOOOOOOO!!! I am really disappointed that M.Mc will be the lead in a new spin-off. Ugh! That means I won’t get my wish of his character being killed off quickly! Dang. Just not a fan of the body of work he’s had, nor of him personally (from interviews etc.) I adore the Yellowstone World — all 3 shows so far have been impeccable! I doubt I’ll be a fan of M.Mc new spin-off. :(
Mathew Mc…no no no…. not impressed…. no Yellowstone worth watching
without Kevin and his daughter!!
As long as it is a spin aff show and not Yellowstone itself. Like 1883 and 1923 there were different characters.
All original cast members, that’s how it should continue. Thks you joe mortellaro buffalo n.y.
