Spoiler alert: We’re about to discuss a minor plot point from the finale (Episode 8) of Obliterated, now streaming on Netflix.
The minds behind Netflix’s Obliterated had a simple vision for the Las Vegas-set action-comedy series: “big reactions, big laughs, big scares and big tension.” If you’ve binged (or possibly tripped) your way through the show’s eight-episode first season this weekend, you already know that this was a mission accomplished.
Speaking of accomplishing missions, can we talk about that ending? And no, we’re not referring to the team successfully thwarting the terrorists’ plot to blow up Las Vegas. We figured that would happen. We’re talking about McKnight (Nick Zano) and Ava (Shelley Hennig) finally finishing, you know, the business they started in Episode 1. Then boom. Cut to black. Roll credits.
According to executive producers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the decision behind that final (money) shot was two-fold: not only did the characters deserve it after two-failed attempts throughout the season, but they also “didn’t think we’d ever seen a show that ended on a shot like that.” (If they’re wrong, we’d love to hear about it in the comments.)
The moment was made even more memorable when paired with suggestive imagery (champagne bottles popping, etc.) from the team’s victory party. “The last line of the script is very descriptive,” the EPs note.
But will there be a morning after for McKnight and Ava? “Obviously nothing’s promised” in terms of the show getting a second season, but the EPs are “hopeful that the world reacts to the show like we hope they do.” And if the opportunity for a second season does present itself down the line, they’re ready to make it happen: “We fall in love with our characters and everything we write, and the movies that we wrote throughout our careers have had sequels.”
Simply put: “As long as there are bad guys in the world, then there’s the potential for our team to come together and party and hopefully save the day elsewhere.”
Have you already burned through Season 1 of Obliterated? Are you hoping for more? Grade it in the poll below, then drop a comment with your full review.
Loved it! Hopefully a season 2 comes.
This show was absoulltely ludicrous, beyond silly, and that twist was telegraphed but DAMN was it funny and enjoy able as well. Nick Zahn totally going against his legends of tomorrow type i barely recognized him.
Don’t necessiarly need a second season but it was a ton of fun to watch this weekend
This was awesome! I thought it would be stupid, and it was, but in all the best (intentional) ways. Definitely the most fun I’ve had watching something in a while. Netflix releases a lot of really “blah” content these days and you’d be forgiven for thinking this was just more of the same, but it’s not. I hope people find it and it does well.
Binged it and loved it more the I ever expected. It knows exactly what it is and hits the marks on all the right ways. Need a renewal now
It’s a great series and I hope there’s more.
The show is successfully a failure and a success. First, it portrays the team of supposedly the Best of the Best as a bunch of stoned drunk bumbling incompetent idiots that couldn’t save anything from anybody.
But. When you take it in the vain of a comedy, it works ok. It definitely is no “Guardians”. Don’t know if I would watch a second season
Best series starring a Brad Pitt lookalike ever! Can’t wait for Season 2!
It was the funniest series I have ever seen. It has my vote for a second season. The raunchier the better. Screw those PC snowflakes, if they don’t like it change the channel I’m tired of other people trying to dictate what we should watch. Kudos to Netflix. I want more shows like this keep up the great work.
Great show funny action packed great scenery views of Vegas really enjoyed the 8 episodes please add more seasons

It’s extremely over the top, but in a very VERY good way. LOVED it.
