Well, we have good news and bad news, All American fans. The good news is: You’ll be seeing more of Spencer and the gang this season. The bad news is: You might be seeing less of them next season.
The CW has increased the football-themed drama’s Season 6 episode order from 13 to 15, according to our sister site Deadline, with the extra episodes allowing producers “to flesh out that story better and bring it to a satisfying conclusion.” But if All American is renewed for a seventh season — its status for next season is still currently in limbo — it will likely introduce a new wave of “next-gen young characters,” Deadline reports, in an effort to freshen up the series and reduce production costs. (The CW had no comment when reached by TVLine.)
The current Season 6 finds Daniel Ezra’s Spencer playing football in college and preparing for the NFL draft, which “would wrap creatively Spencer’s journey” on the show, Deadline notes. It currently airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW, after returning for Season 6 earlier this month.
All American is in “the strongest position to potentially continue” of the three remaining CW scripted shows that predate the network’s acquisition by Nexstar. (Superman & Lois’ upcoming fourth season, slated to air later this year, has already been announced as the final season.) The spinoff All American: Homecoming, though, isn’t as lucky: Deadline pegs its chances of renewal at “less than 50-50, with a cancellation as the more likely outcome.”
Would you watch All American with a fresh cast? Let us know in the comments below.
Yes I will
Well I would but only if the old cast shows up here and there.
I’d rather they end the series with the 2 extra episodes. I can’t handle a season 7 with a soft reboot. It’ll be like when The Game came back with a soft reboot.
All American and home coming should both continue. It’s about high school and college. Keep the new faces coming please.
A show doing a cast overhaul this late in its lifespan very rarely works out. I’d check it out, but my preference would be for the extra two episodes ordered to give us a proper conclusion to the series.
I would love to get another season with fresh faces
I wouldn’t mind if it semi-rebooted itself as long as it keeps itself new, fresh & different.
Bonus episodes to wrap up storylines. The show will be cancelled.
Yep, preparing for a potential screwing-over by The CW and Nexstar, alright…
New Cast Wow so basically they don’t want to pay workers what they want even though they have giving you a hit show typical Corporate BS
Not so sure I’d continue to watch. It makes sense that the characters have grown in different directions and are movinf on in life, but in my mind, the show was about Spencer and those closest to him. I grew to love those characters so not seeing them kind of closes the idea of watching the show for me. But who knows if the new casting and storyline catch my interest maybe I’ll give it a chance.
Definitely
Time of death for all-uppercase closed captioning on scripted programming: 9:00 PM, April 22, 2024.
Hi Jim,
I’ve seen people mention this on the website before… Is this something that people don’t like? I use close caption all the time, but I never paid attention to whether it’s capitals or not and I was wondering about it being a topic of conversation. Thanks!!
I had been so frustrated over All American using all-caps closed captioning from the beginning of its run. In 1999, all scripted TV programs on American broadcast TV had their CC in uppercase. In 2024, all scripted broadcast TV programs have their CC in lowercase. Somebody at NCI-CAP (who does the closed-captioning for All American) told me that it’s the producers of those programs who request uppercase closed-caption, and NCI-CAP have to honor such requests to the very end of their runs. I wish those producers wouldn’t make such requests; The shows’ CC has to be in lowercase no matter what. Only use uppercase CC for live events.
I’ve found it bothersome that Criminal Minds continues to use all-capitals CC in its final few years on CBS (and retains that CC style on its Pluto TV channel while reruns on WeTV have lowercase CC). The uppercase CC had become too big of a bother for me to get into shows like Criminal Minds, Arrow, The 100, and the two All American shows.
I checked for myself on The CW’s website, and saw that it was actually the sixth episode of All American‘s current sixth season that the drama finally ditched the all-capitals CC. We might have to change that time of death to April 29. I first saw confirmation of this on a tweet by Tribe Mafia (a hip-hop duo from Austin, Texas who contributed a song (titled “Nonstop”) to that sixth episode “Connection”. My apologies for the initial mistake because of being too scared to check for myself in the first place.
Yes l will definitely watch it with the new cast. I love all American regardless of who is acting.
Shocking that they are producing these CW shows at 500k to a million per episode. It usually take a couple hundred people to staff a series and you have to rent gear, studio space, location, etc… And they want to bring the costs down even more. From a business perpective, I get it. Broadcast ratings are, maybe, 10% of what they were in the demo, compared to 20 years ago. But, perhaps, broadcast just isn’t viable anymore. I don’t think the CW survives more than a couple of years.
A good middle ground is to make the show about Dillion and his circle of friends who include an All American Basketball or Football player. You time jump a couple of years and Spencer and Jordan are established in the NFL. Layla and Olivia married them and moved out of California as well. Coop and Patience got together and Coop moved out of state for Law school (Patience followed.) The original cast does guest appearances and is mentioned from time to time. I don’t love it, but I could at least give it a shot.
I’m not here for any type of soft reboot. Do, whether the CW orders a 7th season or not, I’m bowing out at the end of the season.
No, I love the original cast and why not follow Spencer’s NFL career?
Getting the rights to NFL IP is too expensive to do that.
I don’t know if the NFL would allow them to use their teams to follow Spencer’s Journey I mean sure for the Draft but no not the whole journey!!
Definitely. I loved the show from the start and looked forward to each new season.
I love spencer he is my man so I don’t know it depends
I would love TVLine to do an article ranking shows that have gone this soft reboot route (not including the spin-offs). I’m trying to think of shows that have done this successfully but not many have come to mind. Friday Night Lights and Grey’s Anatomy might be the only real winners imo.
All this to say, I will be tuning in but skeptical on how good it will be. I love Spencer James as the center of this show!
There’s no way I would be interested. I love All American WITH its current cast and characters, most notably Daniel Ezra as Spencer James. A new group of characters wouldn’t interest me.
First off I wanna say thank God because 13 episodes wasn’t gonna cut it I think this’ll wrap up Spencer’s story no matter what!! If we do have a Season 7 with a new cast I’m cool with it just as long as we get to keep some of the originals like Preach for one thing!!
Yes; Preach, Grace James & “Him”, Laura Baker, & Denise!
I definitely won’t be watching any further if they change the the actors
No!!!! I would stop watching because these characters are naturally progressing as adults and they keep my interest!!!! I love for these characters and the actors telling this story!
I want to watch season 7 with the original cast, including Daniel and Samantha.the original cast still has some juice left to tell! Keep the OGs.
Yes I would continue watch the show.
Yes i will watch it this so all american has so much more to say so yes pass the ball
