The second season of Chapelwaite that has been in development at MGM+ since February 2022 is no longer moving forward.
“I’m afraid Captain Boone’s story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand,” series co-creator and executive producer Jason Filardi posted on X (fka Twitter). “There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!”
Chapelwaite, which is based on Stephen King’s short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” debuted in 2021 on Epix (which is now MGM+). Set in the 1850s, the series “follows Captain Charles Boone (Adrien Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea,” reads its official description. “However, Charles will soon have to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history, and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.”
The new season that was in development, as reported in February 2022, was supposed to reveal that the Boone family’s curse didn’t die with Jakub (Christopher Heyerdahl), and that De Vermis Mysteriis remains as powerful as ever.
In addition to Brody, the adaptation also stars Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Jennifer Ens (Buying Back My Daughter), Sirena Gulamgaus (Transplant) and Ian Ho (The Expanse).
The series is executive-produced by Donald De Line, Jason Filardi and Peter Filardi.

Reversing renewals should have been a big part of the WGA contract strike. Studios used to suffer penalties for passing on put pilots (which don’t seem to be a thing anymore). There should be even greater penalties for canceling a show they already renewed.
I hate it for the fans and everyone involved with the show. It had everything I would have liked, but I couldn’t get into it. I just don’t enjoy shows set during that era.
But it was based on vintage King!
Actually really sad about this. It was a really quality show with fantastic period detail and costuming, genuinely spooky too. Disappointed there won’t be another season!
Season 1 wrapped up suitably, but since I liked most of the cast and the show was watchable I was going to go along for the ride in Season 2. I would have been cool with no Season 2, but I really don’t appreciate being yanked around by an October 15 premiere date, then nothing, then Season2 being in the wind, then having the rug pulled out from under me by way of unrenewal. And just to pre-emptively dispense with any clapback: Yes, it actually is all about me.
^ This. I woulda been a little sad for no season 2, but not that bad. But just the other day I was thinking about this show and wondering when S2 was going to happen… Unrenewals are the worst
This really sucks…it was a great show.
Dammit!
Why do do all the good thought provoking
Shows get cancelled and the junk continues on and on. Mind boggling.
This show would keep my mgm+ subscription alive. Sadly like Chapelwaite mgm+ is dead to me. Bring it back again please!!!
What more story to tell in season 2? The father ended up being a zombie to protect the book. The end of the story.
Really sad that this happened to this show and everyone that was involved. And I agree so much with what others said about how reversing renewals, a practice that was started by David Zaslav last year after he scrapped Batgirl and moved on to do the same for other projects for tax-writes off, should have been part of the WGA contract. Something like that never happened before, once a show got renewed it stayed like that, period. What Zaslav did made others feel confident enough in doing it as well this year and it’s awful. I hope some other streamer can see the potential in this to pick it up and let the showrunner’s creative vision be realized.
This is why I don’t invest in serialized shows. Too many times I’ve been burned.
I’m seriously bummed about this news. I was eagerly awaiting Season like a kid waits for Santa on Christmas Morning. I’m so sad now! I love, love, love Adrian Brody. I think he did an amazing job in season 1. He’s also not bad to look at either. Ugh, well there goes my winter plans 😭
Awe come on why does all the great shows get canceled probably because that dam writers strike. We have to do better than this especially with good shows. Same with Penny Dredful maybe now the strike is over maybe they will rethink about canceling
They never fail canceling good shows. Nikita, The Secret Circle, Penny Dreadful, Forever, Almost Human, Defiance, etc. But crappy shows live on….
What the heck happened??? We were sooo looking forward to another season….get it together guys, you don’t get to announce another season then drop!
I am very disappointed at the news that there will be no more Chapelwaite! I thoroughly enjoyed Stephen King’s book, Salem’s Lot, as I have all of his books. I do not understand why this series was not continued. Was it lack of viewers? I thought the series was interesting enough to keep going. Again, I am very disappointed to start a good series only to have it whisked away!
This was a stellar series in my opinion. It truly, truly disappoints me season two will not be. I envisioned so much more to come due to how episode 10 ended. That story is definitely far from over, and it’s a real shame nothing further will come of it. Hopefully someone will buy the rights to it and give it the season two it so deserves. I agree with one of the others here about the great ones being cancelled and all the junk living on forever it seems.
I’m very disappointed! I was looking forward to Season 2.
They should just do a Salem’s Lot – Chapelwaite series with stories surrounding both towns from the 1900s until just before Salem’s Lot in the 1970s.
We are so bummed to hear of its cancellation. It was a really good show and nothing like what has currently aired. I love the time period and the eerieness of the nighttime nature noise and the darkish day skies. Should not have been canceled. My daughters and I was hoping this was a marketing stunt and that it truly is renewing. Our fingers are crossed. Please bring It back.
