It’s pencils down and viewers bummed. HBO‘s Euphoria will have an even longer break between Seasons 2 and 3 than it did between Seasons 1 and 2, our sister site Deadline reports. Between the writers’ strike, series creator Sam Levinson’s commitment to The Idol and in-demand star Zendaya’s busy schedule, Euphoria, which aired its sophomore season finale in 2022, won’t return until 2025 — at the earliest.
“Euphoria is one of those [shows] that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol, but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” HBO exec Francesca Orsi says. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show — ideally in 2025 — will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is [not writing] and just finishing post on Idol.”

Although the cabler’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon continues to shoot Season 2 in hopes of premiering in the summer of 2024, George R.R. Martin has said that his other prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, has shut down its writers room. Work on new seasons of The Last of Us and The White Lotus has also ground to a halt. “We were looking at The Last Of Us for some time in 2025,” Orsi said. “And The White Lotus was ideally looking to go in 2024, but there’s some question about timing of the strike…
“I’m hopeful that we can come to terms sooner than later,” she added. “Otherwise, we will have to assess what is the end of the ’24 schedule, what are the shows that are going to be delivered for 2025. At this point, those shows that I’m looking to air wouldn’t necessarily be ready if this strike [were to] last six to nine months. So yes, that’s a big question for us, but I think we’ll cross that road once we come to it.”
I know they are blaming the strike but it was going to be mid or late 2024 at the earliest even before the strike happened.
True. Zendaya is a huge star. And many others are up and coming, so it would have been hard to have shot in time to have returned before the timeframe you referenced. Plus, The Idol is coming out.
Euphoria does have a great cast. The Idol looks….interesting.
Something makes me feel like this just isn’t coming back..
No way HBO is letting them out of their contracts. They’ll play these characters when they are 40 if it takes that long to make S3.
I’ve been meaning to watch, but haven’t started yet, so correct me if I’m wrong…isn’t this a show about high schoolers? Much of the cast is already in their mid-20s, and will be nearing 30 by the time this comes to fruition. I hope it’s being planned as a final season, or at least moves past high school.
It revolves around high school with a few recent grads who are on the fringes.
.
It’s good but you might as well wait until it completes its run at this point.
I don’t think I’m a prude, but I think the show’s depiction of violence, sex, and drug use is a lot and I’m thankful they don’t use actual teenagers.
I do t think it’s officially confirmed but I’ve heard speculation the next season will jump forward five years.
Alexa Demie is in her 30s. A 32 year old high schooler
Wow… the wait time between new seasons is getting ridiculous. This happened even before the writers strike, so that’s not the only issue. It’s just so difficult to understand why it takes TV shows that only produce 8-10 episodes per season 2+ years to churn out new ones… The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. didn’t have this long of a wait time, so what gives now?
Agree. I have been saying they need to film seasons back to back, now I think they need to write them back to back as well. The breaks are just ridiculous when network used to do 22+ (and some shows still do).
Streaming isn’t a great model for content. Broadcast/Basic Cable: +episodes = +ad revenue. Premium cable: need for weekly tentpole content, so new viewers have something catchy to watch right away and, also, good ratings help them sell the content as must-watch. Streaming hides ratings and has huge libraries, they just need trendy content and a few episodes every now and then does it.
I think an additional issue is those shorter seasons mean everyone has time to purse other projects that are of varying lengths, so it’s harder to get everyone’s availability to line up (not sure on this, just how it seems)
By the time S3 is on, I’ll have lost interest and moved on to other shows. That what always happens (with me anyway) when there’s such a big gap between seasons.
I don’t care if they cancel it since it turned into a sausage fest.
The breaks between seasons is getting longer and longer. More and more people forget the last season that was aired, so they don’t bother to watch the second, or when they do hit the air again, supposedly picking up where they left off, the characters have aged to much. Look at Stranger Things , between seasons the kids went from being prepubescent to teenagers between season 2 and 3. So at some point you have to wonder, why even bother, or you could always just pat the writers what they deserve.
If you’re missing out on stories about teenagers doing drugs and acting out, you can just read the news!
Time jump assured. Cast in two years could be pushing 25 or 30. Teen angst indeed.
Alexa Demie, who plays Maddy Perez, is 32. Most of the other main high school age actors on the show are in their mid-20s.
Season 2 was a snore and not worth the wait covid imposed. It shelved Jules and Kat to focus on the stupid sisters and the play no school would let be performed on its stage. Delaying 3 isn’t going to do it any favors.
What about Season Two of “Julia” and “The Gilded Age”? Has filming wrapped up?

I wonder if the pandemic is still hanging around in the background here, in terms of the delays . Perhaps projects signed up for the last two of three years which would ordinarily have been long completed are not quite out of queues.
Sounds like it’s time to cancel a lot of these extra channels and streamers. All the worthwhile shows are being pushed back years, simply because corporate greed can’t wisen up and pay their writers fairly. We wouldn’t even LOVE these shows if it weren’t for the writers. Ridiculous.
Why does Zendaya look like she doesn’t shower or wash her hair?
It’s such a bad week for WB between this David Zaslav getting booed at Boston University’s graduation and chased by a banner plane…
