Elena and Lila’s story will reach its conclusion on HBO with a fourth and final season of My Brilliant Friend, TVLine has learned.

The final collection of episodes (premiere date TBD) will be based on The Story of the Lost Child, which is the fourth book in Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend quadrilogy.
“When we decided to bring Elena Ferrante’s masterpiece Neapolitan Novels to the screen, we knew Elena and Lila’s story had to be told in its entirety,” says Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming. “It’s both thrilling and bittersweet to embark on this fourth and final season. We’re deeply grateful to the entire creative team led by Saverio Costanzo and Lorenzo Mieli, and to our season 3 director Daniele Luchetti. We look forward to completing the quartet and know The Story of the Lost Child will bring the series to a close with the same heart, intimacy, and epic storytelling that has defined Elena and Lila’s journey from the beginning.”
For the uninitiated, My Brilliant Friend tells the story of “Elena Greco and the most important friend in her life,” according to the official logline. “She met Raffaella Cerullo, whom she has always called Lila, in the first year of primary school in 1950. Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story goes on to cover more than 60 years of their lives and explores the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and — in a way — both her best friend and her worst enemy.”
New episodes of the show’s third season air Mondays at 10/9c. The season finale is scheduled for April 18.

It was always meant to last 4 seasons since the beginning, given its huge success the renewals are just a formality really.
Is it actually that successfull? I mean it is in Italy, but I never hear a peep about it in the American entertainment news. I thought it was a rather niche product and not A great success for HBO.

It’s very popular in Europe… I don’t think most people like subtitles in America, which might explain why it didn’t do that well there.
W ell I have no idea what this “My Brilliant Friend” HBO series is but I will give it a view to see if I like it.

Yay! Such an incredible show and this season has been phenomenal once again. There is literally nothing like it on tv and every week it transports me to Italy. So happy we’re going to get one more fabulous season! Will miss these two wonderful young actresses though when they’re forced to age the characters up next season.
The series is brilliant because the story is brilliant. Both have mesmerized me. I’ll read the books again and again!

One of the all time brilliant series of a friendship that has gone through unthinkable highs and lows. Jealousy, admiration and bravery during years of change. So glad we get a final Season 4!
Absolutely beautiful! I read the first book before I started watching the HBO series but it was so helpful for me to be able to picture all the characters as they were portrayed in the series when I read the other three books. I was completely hooked. I think they did an excellent job in both casting and editing what made it to the filming. Best books and tv that I have experienced in a very long time. Unforgettable!
This series is as brilliant as the Ferrante novels. My husband & I are emotionally “spent” @ the end of each episode. This is film @ it’s highest level. The women’s stories of poverty, violence, politics, education & loyalty are so relateable & relevant today. So glad to know there’s season 4.

Actually Elena is the Brilliant Friend and is referred to as such by Lila in the first novel and in season one.

I purchased it on kindle. Each book in the set is based on each season of the show.
I love the story watched all of episodes. I will really miss it when it’s over. I was in an Italian family some of it is familiar. Thanks for bringing it to HBO.
I came upon the series & decided to watch it & got hooked! It’s such a great story that you have to keep watching to see what’s next . Story is excellent & I love the language I understand very little but I read the subtitles. I fell in love with Elena & Lila.. can’t wait to see what the end brings & I’m going to read the book & I’m sure I’ll rewatch it again..
My Brillent Friend is the most well done thing I seen on tv in years the actors are all perfect for their roles the series stays very close to the books and is beautiful to watch I am only sorry their are only four books and they will be complete next season

So unbelievably elated that HBO took a chance on a foreign language series to maintain the integrity of the characters and environment. It is beautiful storytelling at its best.
I’ve watched this series from the beginning and it’s marvelous! I wasn’t familiar with the books, but being on HBO it intrigued me enough to give it a try, and I’m glad I did! You need to start watching from the beginning to truly understand the dynamic between Elana & Lila, and life growing up in post WWII Naples poverty. Education there and then wasn’t free, and both girls were the smartest in their class, but only one of them’s family made the necessary sacrifices to see her continue her education. It’s a slow burning tale, and it’s delightful!

Bravo, HBO for bringing such an exquisite piece of storytelling into our living rooms. The writing, the acting, the photography are all brilliantly realized. This is the most compelling television l have seen in years.

Truly a beautiful show. It makes me want to move to Italy The language is wonderful and since I don’t speak Italian the subtitles are a necessity. I am totally hooked on this show.

I read all the books and I am now watching the series, I love them. Such a friendship, with so many ups and downs between Lenu and Lila, I like the fact that the story will be told in it’s entirety
