The Lord giveth, and He taketh away: The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for Season 6, which also will be its last hurrah.
Hulu announced the dystopian drama’s fate Thursday at the Season 5 premiere event, which took place at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In addition, the streamer confirmed that Handmaid’s showrunner Bruce Miller is “actively developing” a sequel series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel The Testaments, that picks up years after the events of the original show.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 begins streaming on Wednesday, Sept. 14, with a two-episode premiere. Single episodes will follow weekly.

Finally! This is one of those shows that’s gone on way too long!
Yep, was hoping s5 would be the end.
Definitely curious to see what their endgame is.
I’d really love to see them reach a hopeful conclusion that shows there is a way to fix an oppressive fascist dystopia, but I fully recognize that this show has never been about easy or comforting answers, so a bleak or at least ambiguous ending may be in store.
They should because the original book had an epilogue where they were examining period artifacts at an academic conference- almost like they (the book you just read was transcribed from the tapes) were Ancient Greek maybe Civil War era artifacts or maybe like Jim Crow era.
Personally I love the show, not to say it isn’t time for the end. I look forward to the spinoff “The Testament”. I read and enjoyed the book.
Yes, it’s time for The Handmaid’s Tale to end, but in a way that leads into The Testaments. Storylines which do not show up before The Testaments need to be resolved and Aunt Lydia needs to find reasons to begin her conversion.
I’m obsessed with this show when it’s on, but it’s definitely time. It’s really an example of people wanting the inevitable and then it happens and no one can be happy about it. I’ve been rewatching The West Wing and I’m sort of craving a President Zoey Bartlett, only if Aaron Sorkin and Lizzie have nothing else going on.
I thought season 5 was the last. What more can happen? Are they really going to draw out whether she reunites w her first daughter? Yep, I think the producers are getting greedy. Same w Cobra Kai. Hopefully this season 5 will be it’s last. Do they have to resurrect every former foe or contestant? Even Ozark pushed it a bit with splitting the last season but I’d rather have two half seasons in the same calendar year than seasons 14 to 24 months apart for only 8 to 2 episodes….sometimes 6. Hey remember when network tv shows cranked out 22 to 30 shows a year? It was ridiculous w Stranger Things
…they were all advanced adolescents or almost in college. There’s going to be a viewer fatigue w the way streamers are stringing customers along.
I think it could go on for 10 seasons. Way worse shows have been given way more. I hate it when good shows end.
ITA!! I love this series, and would welcome a 6th season (but perhaps after that, they should finish it off) Definitely looking forward to The Testaments!
I love these characters dearly and I get grumpy when my “universe” gets new people. I stopped watching TWD but I never would have been so entitled to say that just because I don’t like something anymore, it should cease to exist so no one else can enjoy it. Makes me so sad.
The show’s viewers and the books’ readers want to SEE Gilead’s downfall. I was listening to the Eyes on Gilead podcast and they pointed out that June’s tale was only one of thousands of women’s stories and I got to thinking that we need a comprehensive conclusion to not only her story but all the other unknowns who were affected by Gilead.
Good, about time. Another show over staying it’s welcome.
so the season after this season will be the last…not this season.
thought the whole series was stupid .
Hopefully Alexis Bledel is available to return for the final season to wrap her character!
They probably gave her character an ending in Season 5. She’s recently divorced with a young child, so I doubt if she’ll be returning.
I read how they wrote her out (I’m a huge fan of spoilers) and it is AWFUL. Super out of character for her.
Makes me sad to see it end, I really look forward to seeing new episodes, the story is so gripping, I don’t want it to end
I’ve never been hooked to a TV series like I am with The Handmaid’s Tale. All the actors are awesome and the storylines are nail biting edge of your seat. I would love it to never end. They could do longer flashbacks of life before Gilead. Elisabeth Moss is the best!!!
Its hard to say end in season 6 because not seen season 5 yet.To see how it ends.
Handmaid’s tale was by far, the best series I have ever watched.
I will be disappointed to see it end.
