The highly anticipated Young Sheldon spinoff may already be rewriting history with its newly revealed title.
Following a series order in March, CBS has confirmed with the release of its Fall 2024 schedule that its multi-camera offshoot centered on Georgie and Mandy will be called… Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. It will pick up where Young Sheldon leaves off and air Thursdays at 8/7c (premiere date TBA).
The title is a play on previously established Big Bang Theory lore: In the hit sitcom’s 2019 series finale, Nobel Prize winner Sheldon said he received congratulatory texts from Georgie’s ex-wife… and Georgie’s other ex-wife.
During a recent interview with TVLine, Georgie & Mandy stars Montana Jordan and Emily Osment expressed hope that the spinoff would find a way to undo (or at the very least tinker with) Georgie’s marital history.
“I’m hoping that I’m the ex-wife and the new wife,” Osment said at the time. “People get divorced and remarried. Why can’t she be both?”
Judging by the title, it sounds like that’s precisely what producers have in mind. Watch a teaser below:
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage — which is being penned by Young Sheldon co-creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, and fellow TBBT veteran (and Young Sheldon co-showrunner) Steve Holland — will follow Jordan and Osment‘s fan-favorite characters “as they raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting and marriage,” according to the official logline.
No further casting has been revealed as of press time.
We trully live in golden age of tv
We live in the age of spinoffs and reboots, not original ideas. The 70s (the likes of All in the Family, MASH, and Mary Tyler Moore) was the golden age.
There was a lot more variety in the 70s, but “All in the Family” had quite a few spinoffs. And “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” also had spinoffs.
Not only did All In The Family have spin-offs, but a couple of those had spin-offs of their own. AinF > Maude > Good Times and AinF > The Jeffersons > that hotel show with Florence (forgot the title).
Also bunkerplace and Gloria then in the 90s 706 houser street.
Amen and 227 wouldn’t of happened if not for the jeffersoms popularity
I think it was called Checking In.
There were only four TV channels in the 1970’s.
There was also a very good mystery radio program on CBS radio in the 70’s. I have to find a time machine somewhere.
All In The Family was based on an earlier British sitcom, Til Death Do Us Part. M*A*S*H was based on the movie.
Those were not original ideas and involved spinoffs.
LMAO no, this show is as dumb as YS. If it weren’t for Jim Parsons having originated Sheldon it wouldn’t have lasted as long as it did.
I can’t wait for this show! And I also hope they decide to keep this couple together long term. They really are sweet and every throw away line from TBBT doesn’t need to be gospel.
We don’t know much of Georgie’s future life. But Sheldon’s line did seem to indicate two wives. And they were not the same person. People do get divorced, and married again. Especially on television. So, time will see what happens.
I am actually not that high on a show that only has Georgie and Mandy, his in-laws. Because already the scenes on Young Sheldon makes me wish they were still at the Cooper homestead. It’s more boring. And Mandy’s mother is not a appealing mother-in-law. Harping. Showing her constant disapproval. So, I can by that they will eventually divorce.
Perhaps there was a marriage to a second person in-between?
Exactly – Sheldon’s line makes it clear there are two separate women that Georgie marries. That doesn’t mean that Georgie and Mandy aren’t married again to each other for marriage number 3.
Georgie owns a chain of tire stores in BBT, which is the business Mandy’s father is in.
I agree, but Will Sasso has been in need of a steady job since Mad TV left the air.
I agree. You never see an article or review that doesn’t point to something has to be this way for continuity with TBBT. For example, why does the father have to pass away at the end of young Sheldon, since we already know he is not this horrendous father TBBT made him out to be? There have been may spin offs through the years where there has not been exacting storylines to the original programs.
They could always pull a Dallas or Roseanne move and say it was a dream.
I can get behind that. Since I’ve been binging Young Sheldon like crazy, I’ve become fond of that family. I’m looking forward to the new series. I hope that the rest of the family show up on occasion. I couldn’t imagine them not being in Georgie’s and Mandy’s life.
Just get rid of the idea that Georgie had multiple wives, it’s okay for spin-offs to ignore some things the original show established. Frasier basically rewrote Frasier’s entire family history that was established on Cheers for example.
Ridiculous. Multiple marriages is all a part of who Georgie was.
This isn’t like MASH with Margaret Houlihan’s father being dead early on – for the sake of a one-off joke that had nothing to do with anything else the rest of the time – and her father later appearing for a touching story.
And being an only child with a dead father who had been a scientist was part of who Frasier was until the spin-off. And Fraiser was a much more significant character on Cheers than Georgie ever was on Big Bang.
Can’t wait!!!! My two favorite characters on tv right now.
Have they decided whether it’s single cam or not?
It will be multi-cam.
Thanks for the answer, but boo on multi-cam!
I’ll be watching though. Even tho I’ve never watched a full ep of TBBT or YS
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TBBT was a favorite of mine. I have been binge-watching YS and it’s hilarious. The characters are endearing, so I have hope for the spinoff. Georgie is so danged funny on YS.
AND THAT does what for me watching or the audience?
I love this couple and look forward to seeing them in their own show. I’m sure there will be a great troupe of supporting characters (hopefully Mee-Maw is one of them).
I really hope some Young Sheldon characters appear on the spin-off. It’s hard to imagine them “living in a bubble” without having any family around. The only way that would make sense is if they moved away.
I am worried though because there hasn’t been any mention of other actors being added to the cast. Or did they and I forget about it?
I don’t know how they would be able to move away, because on TBBT Georgie said he took care of his mother, sister and family after his dad died. I don’t think it would look good if he just left his family and moved away right after his dad dies. Maybe they just won’t show the others, but will talk about them during conversations (ex. going to visit his mom, but won’t show it).
They have to have other characters besides the two of them. I’m sure some if not all of the remaining family will stop by now and then.
Plus it’s amazing that Emily osment has had the longer career then her brother and sure she did take on some turkey’s like the fox show but I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed she would have the longer career then her brother Hailey Joel osment although he seems pretty content with his life and she’s another one of those child actors that was able to transition to adult roles and she hasn’t had the problems like other child stars likely because of her upbringing and who she has worked with who they probably told her enjoy it while it lasts
Haley Joel Osment is very busy with voice work and on screen acting, including a great turn on What We Do in the Shadows.
I actually think the title is a clever way to rewrite TBBT lore and hints at the potential some bumps in the road in their relationship.
It’s entirely possible that Georgie and Mandy divorce, he marries someone else on a whim, divorces and remarries Mandy. That would account for the 2 ex wives.
That’s what I was thinking. For that matter they both could have married other people after divorcing – or more than one – but eventually reconnect.
But would the woman who was briefly Georgie’s second wife really care enough to call Sheldon and congratulate him?
Looking forward to the show.
Title sounds kind of dumb.
I’m looking forward to this because the characters (and actors) just have an obviously natural chemistry on camera. It may well have caught Lorre and Molaro by surprise at how well that coupling worked out. But like many others, I hope they don’t neglect the other YS characters. Especially Annie Potts who I’ve lusted after… uh, meant to say whose work I’ve enjoyed for nearly 50 years.
EWWW! TMI.
“Sheldon said he received congratulatory texts from Georgie’s ex-wife… and Georgie’s other ex-wife.”
Unless she sent two congratulatory texts, they are 2 different people. Let’s not undo the show with semantic games.
In an earlier episode of TBBT Sheldon was his brother was on his fourth wife…
Whatever the lore, I can’t be the only one thinking that’s just a truly awful name for a show?
I truly believe it has to do with a comment I believe I read on this site in another article. “Why would I want to watch a show about them knowing they divorce in the end?” I’m not saying anyone from the show saw THAT comment but perhaps considered it when titling the show.
Having never watched Sheldon or Theory, reading comments indicate Georgie was married several times. This allows the series ending season to perhaps trace those situations and the final episode is them reuniting. Or it could just plainly mean its the first marriage for each of them. Dunno.
It is easy to do. Have them be relatively happy. But she’ll go to college locally or get a job. Then she’ll have a chance to move for her job, but Georgie will want to stay because of his business. This will lead to a breakup in about 3-4 years. Then a 2-3 year time jump one summer until she comes back. Georgie will have remarried, and possibly divorced already, some annoying idiot. Georgie and Mandy will reconnect, fall back in love, and get back together.
.
Boom. 7-8 year series arc right there.
.
The key to this show will be supporting cast.
I’m watching it, but I have my doubts on the success of this spin-off. Can they atleast get rid of the mother in-law? She’s just unpleasant and annoying.
It doesn’t matter if it flows the polit or not of a remarried . Because he 18 in young sheldon and 42 in big bang theory. He has 24 years. To get married and device twice. If the 2nd married lasted 5 years. The show can worry about it come season 19. Now if it was evenly split. Then yes 12 season in is it run. But we don’t know how long his marriages were.
Reading that literally hurt.
Excited. Can’t wait to watch this.
I predict this series will sink faster than the Titanic.
Wish George did not have to tie. Love his character and relationship with Mandy’s dad. No one cares about what was said on The Big Bang Theory anymore especially with the spin-off. Hope all the characters return except we don’t need Sheldon anymore. Please keep George!
That’s too important a character point in Sheldon’s life. Sadly, George Sr. has to die, and soon, because Armitage is 15 years old and we know George dies when Sheldon is 14 years old. But Georgie evidently played a major role in the Cooper family after George dies (and Sheldon is never aware of it) according to Big Bang Theory. So I’m not sure how that will be incorporated in the new show.
I find the title kind of meh, but definitely still going to watch it. I will be very, very sad if they don’t include some Meemaw and Missy (I suspect if they haven’t they’ll give in shortly after if ratings are meh and after they’ve established the show a bit). I know its not realistic budget wise, but they should have Jerry O’Connel (obvs) and Rebecca Romijn do a flash forward/narration like grown Sheldon does.
EWWW! TMI.
Sounds to me like Georgie and Mandy divorce at some point, he marries and divorces someone else and then Georgie and Mandy remarry. That can also happen in real life.
I hope they can add Meemaw (Annie Potts) into the show. She was the best character on Young Sheldon.
I would love it.
Fans get way too wrapped up in canon.
Love the idea of being the ex wife and new wife! Hey we thought George had an affair turned out he didn’t. So, anything is possible!
