Exclusive Criminal Minds: Evolution Sneak Peek: JJ Find Emily Feeling Pretty Low… and Quite High

Pris had emailed my popular and weekly-ish Inside Line column asking for insight on a Paget Brewster tweet about Prentiss getting “stoned” during this season of Paramount+’s Criminal Minds: Evolution.
My answer to said Q comes in the form of the exclusive sneak peek, above.
In this season’s sixth episode, titled “Message in a Bottle” and streaming this Thursday, July 4, JJ (played by A.J. Cook) helps Prentiss work through an existential (and literal) hangover. After all, the BAU boss was put on restricted duty in the previous episode, after Politico got wind of Prentiss’ recent arrest.
In the clip above, JJ finds Emily crashing at Garcia’s pad, consuming vast quantities of salty and savory snacks. While Emily attempts to pass off her boosted spirits as just the effect of some white wine, JJ comes to realize that other, legalized-in-the-District of Columbia forces are at play.

Surveying the light (if underlit) banter between the longtime BAU buds, Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer tells TVLine, “This episode is just past the midway point of a very heavy season. We wanted to have a bit of a departure with Emily and JJ, showing their closeness but in an unexpected way.”
As for Emily’s unique way of raking chips into her munchies-craving maw — which is effective in keeping dusty seasonings from accumulating on fingertips — “My daughter uses chopsticks to eat chips,” Messer shared, “so this is a nod to her genius snacking skills.”
Elsewhere this week: Alvez and Garcia profile who might be targeting Tyler’s ex-girlfriend, and when Rossi’s Voit delusions reach a breaking point, he confronts the BAU “consultant” and unpack what has been truly haunting him.

Honesty I feel criminal minds evolution is flying too close to the sun in their attempt to be edgy. Yeah I know it’s supposed to be more r-rated with the more gory content and profanity and all but Emily was never someone to crumble like this to quit the team to get high as a kite. It feels like a betrayal to the characters of 15 years.
Or…that’s what 15 years of being around the dregs of humanity does to a person?
If that is the case they should pull a Gideon and turn in their badges.

Rossi’s a headcase. JJ is close to breaking after her likeness was used on a dark net site and Garcia is having more than friends relations with a convicted felon. For the best minds in the FBI they’re all a mess and I am not sure how they still have their jobs
Criminal Minds…. all the torture, abuse, assault and murder is fine, but swearing and getting high, how am I supposed to explain that to my child!?!?!?!??!?!?

Why is it so dark in the clip? You can barely see anything. Is it a power outage in the storyline?
The last episode was like this too. It was so dark I thought something was wrong with my tv. I’m not sure why they think having the show mostly in the dark is effective, but I’m close to tapping out. I am not a fan of this season so far.

It’s so dark, I can barely see the characters’ faces. Glad Pagat will get a comedy scene.
They’re dragging this case and it’s not even interesting, hope it’s done completely by the end of this season.
Too much Tyler and not enough luke character wise. I could care less about Garcia thing, it is another boring plot.
This season is sooo dark! Literally and metaphorically! I can deal with one but both are almost too much. Can we start a gofundme to help them pay their power bill so we can actually see what’s going on???
