Dave Filoni really knows how to give the people what they want, and this week’s episode of Ahsoka was no exception.
Tuesday’s installment, titled “Dreams and Madness,” brought back a fan-favorite character from the original Star Wars film trilogy and delivered more satisfying nods to the Clone Wars animated series.
After defying a direct order, Hera found herself in a hearing before the Senate Committee to answer for her actions on Seatos. Senator Xiono was particularly abrasive, calling her report a “child’s fairytale” and refuting the notion of Imperial remnants colluding, let alone the possibility of Thrawn’s return. He even brushed off the conflict on Mandalore, as depicted in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, maintaining that Gideon (played by Giancarlo Esposito) acted on his own. Xiono then recommended that Hera be court-martialed for her disobedience, and it looked like the general would lose her command.
Enter C-3PO (voiced by Anthony Daniels) on behalf of Senator Leia Organa, arriving just in time to present a data transcript that showed Organa authorized Hera’s reconnaissance mission to Seatos, and was unaware that it went against Senator Xioto’s request. That settled the matter, and Hera was off the hook.
Still, Chancellor Mon Mothma suspected something was up and asked Hera how real the threat of Thrawn’s return was. Hera advised her to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Ahsoka, meanwhile, trained aboard her ship, which was currently in the mouth of the star whale traveling into deep space at hyper speed in a pod of other purrgil. Working out to the last of the 20 or so hologram recordings that Anakin made during the Clone Wars, Ahsoka listened as her master encouraged her to trust her instincts, name-dropping the likes of General Grievous, Asajj Ventress and Count Dooku in the process.
Arriving at Peridea, the space whales dropped out of hyper speed and landed in an Imperial mine field ultimately scared off the entire pod. Ahsoka and Huyang, in their T-6, made an escape even while being chased by Imperial fighters. As they found a temporary hiding spot in the bone-filled graveyard, Huyang wondered how the enemy anticipated their arrival. But, of course, Ahsoka knew the answer: Thrawn.
On Peridea’s surface, Sabine caught Ezra up to speed on everything his missed — including the Battle of Endor, the rise of the New Republic, and Hera’s commanding fleet — while they traveled with a Noti caravan to a new location. Sabine also revealed that Ahsoka took her on as an apprentice, and Ezra recalled when he briefly trained with her.
In the T-6, Huyang’s attempt to scan for Sabine failed, so Ahsoka opted to call to her Padawan through the Force instead. It worked, and Ahsoka noted that she could see her Padawan while Sabine commented to Ezra that she had a “familiar feeling.” But Ahsoka and Huyang were soon forced out of their hiding place. Thrawn, with help from the the Great Mothers, had found their location and ordered Enoch to open fire.
Meanwhile, the Noti came to a dead stop when they spotted Baylan and Hati up ahead. Baylan ordered his apprentice to go with the bandits and kill Sabine and Ezra, and take her rightful place with the Empire while he pursued a different, still-undisclosed path. caravan. The turtle-like Noti put up an impressive fight, considering they were working with slingshots and rocks, while the enemy attacked with blasters. And their tank-like mobile homes added a much-needed layer of protection.
Ezra ordered the Noti to gather and lock themselves inside their hover pods, so that he and Sabine would take on Hati and her reinforcements alone. Sabine tried to give Ezra back his lightsaber and he refused, noting it now belonged to her and that all he needed in this fight was the Force.
Elsewhere, Ahsoka leapt from her shuttle to Peridea’s surface to face Baylan in a rematch, while Huyang, still flying the shuttle, continued to evade the Imperial forces on his tail. On the ground, Ahsoka clearly wasn’t looking to defeat Baylan — she just needed a distraction. Cue Huyang flying overhead and the crossfire from enemy ships providing the perfect opportunity for her to escape on a howler.
At the same time, Ezra and Sabine engaged in battle with Hati, who sliced off a small chunk of Ezra’s hair with her lightsaber. The duo soon also found themselves surrounded by two squads of Night Troopers, deployed on Thrawn’s order. But Ahsoka quickly appeared as backup, helping to fend off Imperial forces. With the tides turning, Thrawn called his troopers back and conceded to a small victory for Ahsoka. As Thrawn gloated to Elsbeth, Ahsoka had already lost the one thing she couldn’t afford to lose — time, given that he soon would be ready to leave the planet, with the Nightsisters’ mysterious coffin-like cargo on board, and make his triumphant return.
As the Night Troopers retreated, Ahsoka not only spared but offered to help Shin, but Baylan’s apprentice decided she was better off on Team Thrawn. Sabine then got a moment to formally clock Ahsoka’s cheating of death — which was all kinds of news to Ezra, who in turn shared a warm reunion with Tano.
And with Huyang hovering in the shuttle above, Ezra realized that was finally going home. Though, that would seem easier said than done..?

That works only if those people have watched the Clone Wars cartoon. Because all he gives is a bunch of fan service.
Speak for yourself. I never watched Clone Wars and I liked this episode.
I’ve only just started watching Clone Wars, yet I’ve enjoyed every episode of Ahsoka. My family has never seen Clone Wars, and they love Ahsoka as well. None of us has seen any part of Rebels. We don’t find it difficult to follow the characters as they are given brief intros or recaps.
I have been thoroughly enjoying this show. And after finally seeing him for more than a few seconds, I think Eman Esfandi is a perfect Ezra. I love all of the casting.
The subtle notes of Leia’s Theme as Threepio appeared were perfect. Leave it to Leia to save the day with impeccable timing.
Ezra’s “you keep it, the Force is my ally” also perfect.
Seeing both Ezra and Ahsoka going against lightsaber wielding opponents without using lightsabers was great.
Nice to see Sabine using some of her armor’s capabilities. It’s a shame she didn’t bring her jetpack though.
Was genuinely surprised to see Threepio. He and R2-D2 were my favorites in the original trilogy. Mr. Filoni, my childhood thanks you.
One episode to go and still so many questions. It’s totally going to be a cliffhanger to another show or movie isn’t it?
Even when stoically staring off and contemplating his path I’m in awe of Big Ray in this. Sadly missed.
Guessing 3PO was due to them probably “not wanting to go there” like Rogue One and deepfake Leia. Completely happy with this, but recasting “the big 3” should be considered if they continue with new republic stories.
Still don’t like Thrawn but anything is better than bringing the yuzan vong to live action!
Sooo… Zeb is “training recruits” ? So it wasnt him in The Mandalorian ? What gives ?
What is with the evil blue guy having a bunch of pens in his shirt pockets…looks dumb
