In The Sympathizer, Robert Downey Jr. is everywhere.
HBO released a new trailer for the espionage thriller on Thursday showcasing executive producer Downey Jr. playing multiple characters. The upcoming limited series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel will premiere on Sunday, April 14 at 9 pm ET.
With Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden, Joint Security Area) and Don McKellar (Michael: Every Day) serving as its co-showrunners, The Sympathizer is described as “an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War, and his resulting exile in the United States.”
Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bebop) plays said spy, while the cast also includes Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le and Ky Duyen.
In addition to co-showrunners Park (who also directs Episodes 1-3) and McKellar, and Robert Downey Jr., the limited series’ exec producers include Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, Kim Ly, Niv Fichman, Ron Schmidt, author Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Jisun Back. Fernando Meirelles directed Episode 4, while Marc Munden helmed 5-7.

This looks awesome. Chan-wook is one of the greatest filmmakers ever and Meirelles directed one of the greatest movies, City of God. Top notch talent.
April 19 is a Friday- do you mean April 21???
I’ll watch anything with Robert Downey, Jr. in it. And it’s a bonus if it’s any good.
spy games with sandra again
I tried to watch the first episode, but it was unwatchable due to half of the subtitles being unreadable. I have a 60 inch HiDef TV and even at just ten feet away I couldn’t read the small white on white background letters. I can’t imagine that anyone watching on a smaller TV or a phone would be able to read them. This happens in too many shows. Does anyone in the production crew even check if the subtitles are readable?
Spot on. I thought it was just me. Why they can’t have a black strip and reasonably sized text is beyond me.
