Bringing history and innovation to life through the only remaining home of Benjamin Franklin

About us

In the heart of London, is Benjamin Franklin House, the world's only remaining Franklin home. For nearly sixteen years between 1757 and 1775, Dr Benjamin Franklin – scientist, diplomat, philosopher, inventor, Founding Father of the United States and more – lived behind its doors. Built circa 1730, it is today a dynamic museum and educational facility encompassing: A Historical Experience - presenting the excitement and uncertainty of Franklin's nearly 16 years in London using his historic rooms as staging for a drama which seamless integrates live performance, and cutting-edge lighting and projection technology. A Student Science Centre - encouraging Franklin's boundless spirit of enquiry through hands-on experimentation with scientific discoveries from Franklin's London years, juxtaposing past and present knowledge. A Scholarship Centre - featuring research facilities, including a full-set of the published Papers of Benjamin Franklin, as a focal point in Europe for study of Franklin and the myriad subjects with which he was associated.

Updates

  • The winners of the Benjamin Franklin House Literary Prize 2023 have been announced! Each year a question or quote exploring Franklin’s relevance in our time is open for interpretation in 1000-1500 words. The competition is exclusively for young writers living in the UK, aged 18-25, with a first prize of £750, and a second prize of £500. Our cash prize is generously sponsored by the Chairman of Benjamin Franklin House, John Studzinski. We are also delighted to partner with The Telegraph who publish our winning entries on their website to showcase their work and inspire more young writers to take part. In 2023, the quote for interpretation was: “Government must depend for its Efficiency either on Force or Opinion.” From ‘The Colonist’s advocate', VII. (Feb 1, 1770) We received some excellent entries for the 2023 Prize and are pleased to announce the first and second prize winners as chosen by our judges including Rory Sutherland, Wendy Moore, Guy Black and Huw David.  First prize winner, Ciara Griffiths, is a Philosophy graduate of Royal Holloway University of London. She is currently volunteering for Oxfam and works as a Social Media Ambassador for BucksVision, a local charity supporting visually impaired people living in Buckinghamshire. Wendy Moore commented it is a "very stylish piece of fiction with lots of tension and echoes of A Tale of Two Cities.” While Rory Sutherland noted “an ingenious link to the French Revolution.”  Read Ciara's winning entry here: https://lnkd.in/egDqe5B2 Second prize winner, Angus Brown is a third year doctoral candidate in History at the University of Cambridge. Lord Black called it “A compelling essay, expertly written.”  Dr. David commended it as a “Well researched, brilliantly structured, [with] a thought-provoking conclusion.” Read Angus's essasy here: https://lnkd.in/ezBzPpuM
