In this special episode of the Ex-Military Careers Podcast, Broadgate's Connor Nurse caught up with the insightful Karen M Wrancher (Gigi), who shared her first-hand advice on transitioning out of the military. Gigi Wrancher is a retired Army Colonel. She was a logistician who managed food distribution, equipment maintenance, disposal and destruction, warehouse management, and aerial delivery systems at increasing levels of responsibility. She served as the first battalion commander of the 1st Armored Division Headquarters (after the division returned to the US after 40 years), the first female Chief to the U.S. Army Quartermaster General, and the first Command Inspector General for Operation Inherent Resolve before serving in the Pentagon. Her culminating assignment was serving as the Chief of the Assistance Division, the largest division in the U.S. Army Inspector General Agency. Gigi began her career as Internal Auditor in December 2020 with Wells Fargo. She began her Vice President role with PNC Bank in May 2024. Lt. Col. Matt Urban, one of the most decorated American officers of the Second World War, was revered for his unparalleled bravery and combat leadership across the European theatre. Born Matthew Louis Urbanowicz, Urban demonstrated leadership and tenacity from a young age. After graduating from Cornell University, he joined the US Army in the spring of 1941, setting the stage for an extraordinary military career. Urban reported to the 60th Infantry regiment, 9th Infantry Division, at Fort Bragg. Nicknamed ‘The Ghost’ by German Soldiers (because he kept coming back to fight after sustaining heavy wounds), After seeing his first combat in North Africa, Urban went on to serve in 6 campaigns across Europe and the Mediterranean, eventually earning the battalion commander position. On one occasion, Urban was recovering from his wounds in an English hospital when he discovered his unit had sustained casualties in Normandy – determined to re-join his men, Urban hitchhiked back to the front, refusing evacuation until his battalion was secure. Lt. Col. Matt Urban's unwavering gallantry was recognised with numerous awards, including the Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and seven Purple Hearts.
