Non-profit Organizations

A global partnership of more than 1,600 civil society organisations committed to ending child marriage

About us

Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage, and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. We are a network of over 1,400 civil society organisations in over 100 countries working in partnership to end child marriage. Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men and are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives. Our vision challenges deeply embedded social norms that harm the lives of girls, women and their communities.

  • 🌟 Proud to share the impactful work of the Gender Leadership Programme (GLP) designed to enhance the capacities of select Girls Not Brides member organisations in India 🇮🇳. GLP trained 27 participants from nine states to become Gender Justice Champions, leading efforts to integrate a Gender Transformative Approach into their work in a way that addresses the root causes, and to develop more impactful programmes to end child marriage and support ever-married girls. The GLP concluded with participants developing an idea for a collective project to put learnings from the programme into practice. 🛠️A workshop was held in Delhi on July 30th & 31st, where participants, supported by Partnering4Change Consultants, developed a tool to capture young people's perspectives on addressing child marriage. The insights gained will help organisations assess and identify areas for strengthening their organisational policies and programmes with a strong Gender Transformative Approach. • 🗨 "Girls’ decisions to marry are not made in a vacuum; they are influenced by a myriad of factors including family expectations, peer influences, societal pressures, economic factors and representations of marriageability, all of which often being reflected and amplified by media portrayals." Read the blog co-written by Salamatou Abdoul Karim Yamba and Aïcha Awa BA, where they delve into Salamatou's research on how peer influence and material gains can shape girls’ decisions regarding marriage. This research highlights the broader theme of societal and cultural pressures, often reinforced by media, impacting young girls' perceptions and choices about marriage. 📖Full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/dba7C6_Q #Education #Media #YouthAdvocacy #SocialMediaInfluence #Research #CaseStudy

What Nollywood has to do with child marriage? (Version française ci-dessous) It is my pleasure to announce the publication of this new blog series around the youth-led research initiated by Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. Salamatou Abdoul-Karim Yamba and I co-wrote the first piece, which explores perspectives from Salamatou's research on how social and mass media influence girls' perceptions of marriage and education. As we delve deeper into the factors driving child marriage, it becomes clear there is a need to develop a stronger collective understanding of the complex interplay between social norms, cultural norms and girls’ agency. While it can be uncomfortable to acknowledge that girls can be involved in the decision-making processes surrounding child marriage, recognising this reality is essential for a nuanced and effective approach to addressing and ending the practice. Girls’ decisions to marry are not made in a vacuum; they are influenced by a myriad of factors including family expectations, peer influences, societal pressures, economic factors and representations of marriageability, all of which often being reflected and amplified by media portrayals. This exploration not only highlights the media’s power in reinforcing traditional norms but also underscores the potential for change through more diverse and empowering narratives. #ChildMarriage #YouthResearch #GirlsEducation #Nollywood #MediaInfluence #SocialChange #Empowerment #WestAfrica #GirlsNotBrides
