University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England.

About us

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population. It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. We also run a number of smaller satellite units, allowing people to be treated as close to home as possible. We see and treat more than 2.2 million people every year across our sites and our hospitals deliver more babies than anywhere else in Europe. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics, HIV and AIDS, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK. We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, the QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC). We have over 24,000 members of staff and we are committed to investing in their development and their health and wellbeing. UHB is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and aims to achieve positive change for LGBTQ+ people by creating an inclusive, inspiring and equal environment for both staff and service users.

  • “My best advice to other leaders, or aspiring leaders, is to be ‘the calm’. You are a role model, and it is important to be calm, particularly when the going gets tough.” Kiran is Chief Medical Officer at University Hospitals Birmingham. Growing up in West Bromwich, it wasn’t until Kiran went to Cambridge University to study medicine that he noticed how stark health inequalities in his home town were. This spurred him on to want to make life better for every single patient he saw. As Kiran describes it, “It isn't about depriving some, but levelling up, and making it better for everyone.” After developing a charity to help tackle the issue, and holding medical director roles at our own Good Hope Hospital and across the West Midlands, Kiran returned to UHB. He said: “My team within the medical directorate has been amazing; they’ve given me the space to get settled in and helped me adjust to UHB.” Read about Kiran’s career, and what qualities he thinks make a good leader, in this week’s ‘Senior leader reflections’ blog.   #NHSJobs #teamUHB #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM

  • “It sounds quite a cliché, really, but believe in yourself. If you've got a passion to do something else, make sure you follow it, because your happiness is the most important thing.”   Nick is a senior data officer in the liver research team at University Hospitals Birmingham. After a career in hospitality, Nick came to the NHS because he wanted to help people and enrolled on a business administration apprenticeship through The Learning Hub, our dedicated careers service. Now, he has progressed to a senior role and has had the opportunity to travel with his work. Nick said: “I feel like there are a lot more opportunities in this job. As opposed to my previous career in hospitality, where I felt I was stuck in a rut. Everyone here is a lot more positive and supportive of my development.” Read more about Nick and his career in this week’s, ‘We are UHB’ blog.

  • 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🥊 Kind-hearted staff at Heartlands Hospital pulled no punches arranging for a teenager, who has a rare type of cancer, to meet his heroes. Boxing mad Ollie from Birmingham was treated to a surprise meeting with GB Boxing as they continued their preparations ahead of the Paris Olympics. Earlier this year, Ollie was rushed to Heartlands Hospital, after his leg broke whilst boxing in his local gym. It turned out that a tumour had caused the horrific break and tests soon revealed that the16-year-old was suffering from a very rare type of bone cancer, that affects one in 1.5 million people. Ollie made the brave decision to have his leg amputated, to stop the cancer from spreading further. Moved by Ollie's incredible bravery and spirit, our compassionate staff decided to do something special for him. They reached out to GB Boxing, who were preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and arranged for Ollie to meet his heroes at the home of national boxing, The Lions’ Den, based at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. 🇧 Carla Lally, Senior Emergency Practitioner said: “Ollie’s courage has been inspiring for all of us. We wanted to give him a memorable experience, and thanks to the generosity of GB Boxing, we made it happen. Seeing Ollie's smile was priceless.” 💙
