  • Market Profile: Cloud Management Platforms, 2013

    Gartner

The cloud management platform (CMP) market is highly dynamic and yet in its infancy because no CMP addresses all use cases out of the box. Mergers and acquisitions complicate CMP selection. Enterprise-grade CMPs are not easily replaced, so organizations should demand long-term vendor commitments.

  • 2013 Planning Guide: Data Center, Infrastructure, Operations, Private Cloud and Desktop Transformation

    Gartner

In 2013, organizations will continue transitioning data centers to host private clouds in order to improve efficiency and agility. Decisions such as choice of cloud management and virtualization platforms and software-defined infrastructure make 2013 a critical year for technical professionals.

  • Evaluation Criteria for Cloud Management Platforms

    Gartner

The cloud management platform (CMP) market is so crowded, and it is evolving so rapidly, that tracking competing solutions and their capabilities represents a significant challenge. Additionally, CMP vendors differ highly in terms of platform maturity, architecture complexity and feature sets, which makes it harder to identify the best solution for cloud management. Organizations that are evaluating CMP solutions require common criteria to objectively evaluate and compare competing products.

Although each organization built its internal cloud to address unique business needs and use cases, all participants faced similar organizational and cultural challenges during the application onboarding process. In this document, Research Director Alessandro Perilli highlights lessons learned by field research participants and discusses common approaches to building onboarding decision criteria across common deployment alternatives. Those may include software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and traditional infrastructure.

  • 2012 Planning Guide Executive Summary: Data Center, Infrastructure, Operations, and Internal Cloud

    Gartner

In 2012, data centers will continue their transformation from a traditional, virtualized, consolidated, and centralized IT infrastructure to a service-oriented, economically efficient internal cloud that enables business units to consume IT as a service, house critical applications and data, and augment capacity by using the external cloud. This transformation is the result of pressure external cloud computing exacts on IT organizations to compete with cloud providers and the desire to support…

In 2012, data centers will continue their transformation from a traditional, virtualized, consolidated, and centralized IT infrastructure to a service-oriented, economically efficient internal cloud that enables business units to consume IT as a service, house critical applications and data, and augment capacity by using the external cloud. This transformation is the result of pressure external cloud computing exacts on IT organizations to compete with cloud providers and the desire to support a growing and increasingly complex remote and mobile workforce. Thus, IT organizations must change from a command-and-control mind-set to an IT broker mind-set that facilitates IT service consumption for their internal customers. In 2012, new technology in cloud orchestration software, server-hosted virtual desktops, virtualized networks and storage, and skinless and blade servers will enable IT organizations to build internal private clouds, virtualize desktops, bridge to external clouds, and increase data center resiliency while reducing capital and operational costs.

Cyber-attacks can be mitigated by automatically coordinating responses from cyber-security tools. For example, a cyber-security engine can include software modules created by multiple sources, each of the software modules being for integrating a respective cyber-security tool with the cyber-security engine. The cyber-security engine can use the software modules to communicate with the cyber-security tools in order to detect one or more events indicative of a cyber-attack against a computing environment. The cyber-security engine can then determine a coordinated-response strategy involving cooperation among the cyber-security tools to mitigate the cyber-attack. The cyber-security engine can transmit commands to the cyber-security tools to cause the cyber-security tools to implement the coordinated-response strategy.

These exceptional community leaders come from a wide range of backgrounds. They are teachers, artists, doctors, engineers, as well as technologists, who actively share their high-quality, real-world technical expertise with the community and with Microsoft.

With the MVP Award, we thank these inspiring individuals for representing the voice of thousands in the community through the powerful and independent feedback they give us, and for helping our customers maximize the potential of their software.
