Propelling Careers Episode 14 is live! Spotify (https://lnkd.in/et9yzMEu) and Apple Podcast (https://lnkd.in/eapnXK5q). This is a jam packed episode - we hope you enjoy listening! In this episode, we continue with resume advice (following on from Episodes 12 and 13) and at the end, Jim Gould, PhD and I provide some critique to his CV and my resume. This episode covers topics such as: - Why it’s important to update your document on a regular basis (hint… it’s not just for job searching) - Is there a preferred order for how to list information in a CV or resume? Jim’s book, making the most of the Postdoc, https://lnkd.in/ebBmuiQY also highlights a few points for this also. - What order are recruiters reading the experience section in a resume? - Content is important but it’s also important to zoom out an make sure the resume or CV is appealing to the eye - Should social media links be included in a resume or CV? - Be intentional about what story you want to share with your resume or CV and ensure it aligns with your career interests - What should people highlight if they are moving into a different field or area from what they have focused on previously? - What do you do if you have gap years? - Should people make their resume look artistic? - How do you deal with acronyms in a resume? - Do you need to meet minimum requirements in a job add? - What about the idea of being overqualified for a role? - What document is best to use for job applications? Word, PDF, other?

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time, not just in the UK but globally. As we grapple with bacteria that are becoming increasingly resistant to our current arsenal of antibiotics, the need for innovative solutions has never been more critical. This is where bioinformatics comes into play, offering a beacon of hope in our fight against this growing threat. Bioinformatics, the application of computational techniques to analyse biological data, is revolutionising our approach to understanding and tackling antibiotic resistance. By harnessing the power of big data, bioinformatics enables us to delve deep into the genetic makeup of bacteria, identifying the specific genes and pathways that contribute to resistance. This is crucial for the development of new antibiotics that are more targeted and effective. In the UK, where the healthcare system is already under significant strain, the role of bioinformatics is particularly vital. It allows researchers to rapidly sequence the genomes of resistant bacteria strains, tracking their spread and evolution. This surveillance is key to informing public health strategies and interventions. Moreover, bioinformatics facilitates the exploration of the vast microbial world, uncovering novel compounds that could serve as the next generation of antibiotics. But the potential of bioinformatics extends beyond just drug discovery. It also plays a pivotal role in the optimisation of antibiotic use. By analysing complex datasets, bioinformatics can help predict bacterial responses to different antibiotics, guiding more precise and personalised treatment strategies. This not only improves patient outcomes but also helps to mitigate the risk of further resistance development. The UK is already a leader in genomic research, and by investing in bioinformatics infrastructure and talent, we can further cement our position at the forefront of the fight against antibiotic resistance. Collaborations between academic institutions, healthcare providers, and the tech industry are essential to drive innovation and translate bioinformatics research into real-world solutions. In conclusion, bioinformatics is not just an accessory but a cornerstone in the UK's strategy against antibiotic resistance. It empowers us to understand the enemy better, anticipate its moves, and outsmart it at the genetic level. As we continue to face this global health crisis, the integration of bioinformatics into our public health arsenal will be instrumental in safeguarding our future. #Bioinformatics #AntibioticResistance #UKHealthcare

🔬 Why Clinical Trials Stop: The Role of Genetics 🧬 A groundbreaking study from Open Targets and EMBL-EBI reveals that incorporating genetic evidence into drug development can significantly reduce clinical trial failures. 🚀 🔍 Key Findings: -Researchers developed a machine learning model to analyse reasons behind early clinical trial termination. -The study found that genetic evidence halves the odds of early stoppage due to negative reasons like safety or efficacy concerns. -Genetic insights can lead to more effective and safer therapies, de-risking future clinical studies. 💡 Study Highlights: -The analysis involved 28,842 clinical trials from ClinicalTrials.gov. -Trials with strong genetic evidence supporting the target-disease relationship were less likely to stop early. -Cancer trials were notably prone to stoppage due to safety or side effects, linked to genetic constraints, multiple known physical interactors, and lack of tissue specificity. 🗣️ Expert Insight: “The results underscore the critical importance of integrating genetic evidence in drug development,” said Olesya Razuvayevskaya, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Open Targets. “This reduces trial failures, leading to more effective and safe therapies.” #ClinicalTrials #Genetics #DrugDevelopment #MachineLearning #Bioinformatics #Pharmaceuticals #Research #HealthcareInnovation #OpenTargets #EMBL #GenomicMedicine #AIInHealthcare

The last 12 - 18 months have been a strange time for an industry that typically is set to battle any issue faced... An industry that develops treatments for ongoing, life changing diseases should always be full of opportunity right? Despite the lull from a number of sectors within the Pharma space, Ophthalmology is one in particular that has kept it's head above water and is continuing to develop innovative and ground breaking treatments. As an industry with an estimated value of $7.97 billion in 2023 which is set to exceed $22.68 billion by 2034, these key clients that we are consistently supporting and making global placements with see the value in their product and in turn the need to hire the best of the best. Just today I personally placed a consultant with an emerging Ophthalmology company looking to get their first product in development in the coming months and hope to have 4 in development by the end of 2025. If you want to have a conversation regarding our abilities to source top talent across the Ophthalmology space across numerous functional areas or a conversation surrounding your experience in the Ophthalmology space, get in touch today for an exploratory conversation. 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠 🧠 An insightful article released earlier this week for Dementia Action Week, highlighting the achievements and research activity in the area of Alzheimer’s disease, something that lies closely to me personally. As the article states, the approval of several drugs for Alzheimer’s disease has encouraged further activity within this space for new drugs and diagnostics. New procedures to calculate tau and other biomarkers are in development. Several companies are developing diagnostic blood tests, with Roche recently winning a breakthrough device designation from the FDA for its Elecsys pTau217 plasma biomarker assay. Another company developing a tau-based blood test is Sunbird Bio, whose APEX platform is a proprietary diagnostic system that detects extracellular vesicle (EV)-bound tau proteins in blood. CEO John McDonough stated that “We don’t just have an opportunity, we have an obligation to develop these tests and make them as accessible as we can in the US and around the world”. Data shows that the Alzheimer's Market will be $15.9bn in 2030 Globally. #Tau #Diagnostics #DimentiaActionWeek

Hera Biotech have reported positive results from their clinical trial of the world’s first molecular, cell-based test for diagnosing endometriosis. This test would eliminate the need for explorative surgery and biopsies to diagnose the debilitating condition, which could speed up the process of diagnosis considerably. The test (MetriDx) demonstrated 94% accuracy in diagnosing the condition in the trails participants. 🔬This is extremely promising news, and much needed advancements in the space, considering its estimated between 10-20% of women worldwide suffer with Endometriosis and the debilitating symptoms that come with it, and diagnosis can take anywhere from 6 to 10 years from the onset of symptoms. ✨ Causes and treatment of Endo have historically been critically under researched and funded, so it is incredibly encouraging to see traction in this area over the last few years. Well done to Hera CEO Somer Baburek, MBA and the whole team, and companies like them for advocating for change for women worldwide. #womenshealth #endometriosis #herabiotech #femtech #womenshealthnews #endo
