📊 The results of our Museum Directors Research is in! More than 300 museum directors responded to this survey helping us explore what challenges the sector is facing and how we can shape our programme, advocacy and planning in response. 👇 Here are some of our key findings... 1. The number of museums worried about funding is growing: In 2022, half of museums were concerned about funding shortfalls. That figure is now two thirds. 2. Audiences are returning: Over half (57%) of museums have seen their overall visitor numbers increase in the last year, with 23% of these reporting audience numbers back to, and 25% above, pre-pandemic levels. 3. Museums are thinking creatively to form new partnerships: 63% of museums are working in partnership with other museums to develop temporary exhibitions in 2024/25. This partnership figure was 46% in 2022. Read more about these results and other key findings from our Museum Directors survey here: https://bit.ly/4e4zi3D

PH21 Gallery presents: 'Shape' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition - Shapes are one of the most important aspects of creative photographic compositions. Living beings and inanimate objects, including the built environment, come in many forms, and photographers often rely on the creative possibilities offered by their shapes. While in some cases the images of things only serve a depictive function, at the other end of the spectrum, abstract photography concentrates on shapes and forms for their own sake, to the point where we can no longer recognise the depicted objects themselves. Between being either insignificant or the only significant element, the shape of recognisable forms may also be the driving compositional component of an image. That is, the shapes of living beings and objects may be of central importance to the composition of photographs, not only in abstract photography but also in virtually all other photographic genres. These images capture our attention and stand out for their creative compositional form. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Shape. We are seeking submissions from all photographers interested in this subject who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure provided by PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; we are looking for photographs in which shape is a significant compositional element, including abstract photography. Indeed, we are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. DEADLINE: August 19, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eXkD5ydN #TheArtList #PH21Gallery #Shape

This is why proper documentation & cataloguing is so important, yes you will still get people doing shady things but it will make these things so much harder. Obviously this also requires sufficient staff capacity, time and resources! #Antiquitiestheft #museums #collections #collectionscare

🖼️ Transforming Collections interrogates concepts of art, nation, heritage, bias, where marginalisation actually happens, and how #AI used responsibly can help recognise patterns and conceits. This 3-year project that I’ve had the privilege of being part of ends this year and the week of events at Tate will look, feel and sound *very* different to your usual art conference and events. Not just a chance to look and listen, but also play. Starting 30 September. I have spent the last two years researching the mechanisms and relationships needed to build public collections of modern British art. This is the hidden stuff you don’t hear about or see, involving an astonishing number of people, schemes and of course, money or money-like currency (philanthropy, positional goods). In particular I’m interested in how such acquisitions are framed in the languages of benevolence and equity, the notions of gift-giving that are central to an unwritten contract between museum and public, and how bias is crystalised and manifested in these processes and the records they produce. Experimenting with the project’s AI machine learning text analyser has significantly changed my views and my findings—and helped me to ‘read’ organisational texts like annual reports at scale. Not perfect and one that has felt at times alien to my normal research methods. I will be talking about all of this at the conference on 2-3 October at Tate Modern.

💬 "Museums can support the wellbeing of their freelance workforce by building costs into their budgets. Make sure that when putting out briefs for consultants, artists, educators, etc., that you’re being fair with how much you’re asking." Great advice from Alice Briggs FRSA . Since going freelance myself one thing I've noticed is that a lot of salaried folk have no idea what a fair freelance rate is, or what their equivalent salary would be in freelance terms. If that sounds familiar, there are lots of guidelines just a quick google search away, but here's one I use from a-n The Artist Information Company: 📍 https://lnkd.in/ejp3S3j3 #freelancers #creativefreelancer #freelancelife #artistfreelancer #freelancerpay

Brilliant Article highlighting the shared leadership approaches at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop. Great to see these models being put into practice. "Running a Residency and Community Programme that aims to support those involved holistically but not doing this for ourselves is fraught. As a sector we can not normalise the extreme pressure we have been working under and the loneliness of leadership, especially in a time when we are experiencing so many threats to the sector. Secondly, this multi-voiced leadership model creates space for more people to step into leadership positions from a wide range of lived experiences. We hope it is a model that can sustain people who face barriers to leadership positions and to do so in a far more supported way." https://sca-net.org/ssw/ #leadership #artistled #sharedleadership #Scotland

Few days from being installed as new @UKCulture Secretary, LisaNandy , said: “Our world-leading museums are a source of creativity and curiosity that can inspire lifelong passions for learning, history and the arts." referring to the ArtFund Award 2024 won by the Young Victoria and Albert Museum What do you find extraordinary in this fact? So many things that I don't dare count, beforehand... 1. Recognition of the innovativeness of the British museums - no doubt that still many (although not all) of the most innovative reflections and approaches come from the UK, willy-nilly. 2. Museums are recognised as source of creativity and curiosity (!!! - I have strived since 2004 to pass the concept that museums are hubs for new cultures but I am a sort of old Briton undercovered: understatement is my Patronus ;-). 3. Museums can be inspirational - no need to comment this point: we all are dancing on the table. 4. Museums can sustain the life-long-learning improvements of the individuals in learning, arts and history. 5. Museums elicit positive emotions, no not positive emotions.... passion! Well, on the day George Clooney speaks up... what else??? One of the best summary of the ICOM definition. Hoping it won't stay just a statement! https://t.ly/JM_ko #innovation #management #digitalmarketing #creativity #Future #futurism #smims #education #fundraising #museums #fsbac #dicolab #share #culturaaldigitale #musei

The theme for THE SUSSEX 2024 is Duality. Jo explains why she chose the theme, and how it can be interpreted and used to inspire your entries in a BLOG POST over on our website. Read an excerpt of the post below: When I think about a subject, theme, or title I like to use literature as a starting point. I always start by researching what the word itself means: DUALITY 1. the quality or condition of being duel “This duality of purpose was discernible in the appointments”. 2. an instance of oppositions or contrast between two aspects of something, a dualism “his photographs capitalize on the dualities of light and dark, stillness and movement”. An idea, observation, or opinion is shown through an artwork that is shared with and communicated to others. It is in this dualism, the convergence of artistic intention with the physical building blocks of visual art that entices the observer to ponder the artwork and why it exists. Drawing them in a rich tapestry of stories, thoughts, and emotions and communicating with them directly. Next time you are at a museum or an exhibition look at the other people around you. Look at those that are caught in front of an artwork for a length of time. They are considering, looking, questioning, admiring, and thinking about what is in front of them. Duality explores the positive and negative spaces in life, between lines and lived-in experiences. Head on over to our website to read more and get your mind immersed in thinking about DUALITY https://buff.ly/3yQ4mE0 #sussexart #sussexartists #sussexcontemporary #opencall #artistopportunity #thesussex #newhaven #duality

From the deserted office park on the periphery of the city to a once bustling shopping centre, Outer Spaces is transforming a diverse mix of meanwhile spaces across Scotland into a network of creativity and innovation. We are reusing redundant buildings and making carbon savings. We are occupying the obsolete post-covid work spaces within corporate offices and the too large or in the wrong location shops and stores that have been lying empty for years. In them, our network of artists, arts graduates, groups and art organisations are connecting and collaborating, researching and making, rehearsing and sharing and opening up their spaces to existing and new audiences, curious about what our artists are doing. Three years on from 2021 when we emerged as a response to the pandemic on artists and creative freelancers, we are planning ahead for the next three years and more. We are not waiting for things to go back to the way they were or for more money to be found for culture. We are finding our own ways and solutions, because at the hardest of times for people working in the arts, Outer Spaces is offering an alternative to what was before. We will keep putting spaces into the hands of artists for free. We know artists need time and space. If artists don’t have to find additional employment to pay for a studio they will have more time to spend there, making the art they want to make. Being artists. As these buildings find new uses or are earmarked for development, we are not standing still. For those in our network, we will keep replacing the spaces that have gone, and we will find more spaces for artists wanting to join. We will continue to create new opportunities, offering more than space. New fellowships, bursaries and new commissioning is already happening and more opportunities are coming soon. We are developing new partnerships because we know we are better when we’re not alone. We are supporting the art creators, curators and producers because we believe in the importance of contemporary art always, but more so in these shifting times. More programming has an effect on us all. More space for culture, more shows to see. Artists maturing and developing their practice. Vibrant places and creative communities emerging in places where there was none. New collaborations and new works enriching Scotland’s culture. Ensuring a future for our network, occupying spaces here and now. https://lnkd.in/e_C7qqri

With the big May auctions taking place in New York this week (Sotheby's kicked off proceedings last night - Monday 13 May) I've rarely seen so much press about the current state of the art market. Last night the results were a little slow, with the total closer to the low estimate than the high estimate and with one of the key lots, the Francis Bacon Portrait of George Dyer Crouching failing to hit low estimate - selling for $27.7 million against the high estimate of $50m (see bottom link). So no doubt this will instigate some more doom and gloom on the art market but I'm quietly optimistic. As investment guru, Peter Lynch, once said: "A correction is a wonderful opportunity to buy your favourite [artist] at a bargain price" (substituting the word company for artist I should note!). I suspect the buyer of the Francis Bacon in 5-10 years will agree, and many others who are scouring the auction block (as I always am) looking for bargains, of which there are going to be many this year. Christies up next... if they can win their current battle with their hackers (as at 6am on the date of their evening sale, the Christies website is still down!). https://lnkd.in/dcUH9_R2 https://lnkd.in/dv_4xw2Y #Art #ArtMarket# #Sothebys #Christies #Phillips #NewYork #ContemporaryArt #FrancisBacon #KerryJamesMarshall #LucyBull #JeanMichelBasquiat #FrankStella #JeffreyGibson #JustinCaguiat #LucioFontana #FaithRinggold
