🎤 Government Seeks Stakeholder Input on Changes to UK REACH ⚗ You might have read or heard about it recently! The UK government is calling on chemical businesses aswell as downstream chemical users and other stakeholders to provide their views on a proposed alternative transitional registration model (ATRm) specific to UK REACH. In a few brief words, the main purpose of the ATRm for UK REACH is to simplify the transition from EU REACH by avoiding duplicate chemical registrations for UK businesses. It focuses on targeted registration and, unlike the comprehensive EU REACH, also seeks stakeholder input to ensure it meets UK-specific needs while maintaining high protection standards, with the name of the game being to save time and money for UK market authorisations. The new model aims to ⚕ 🌳 Maintain high protection levels for human health and the environment. 💸 Reduce transition costs for the domestic chemical regulation regime. The UK has operated under a domestic regime for controlling chemical substances since 2021, replacing EU REACH with the initial transition being slow and burdensome for businesses. The overall transition to UK REACH is expected to cost the UK chemical industry £2bn (US$2.6bn). The ATRm aims to ease the transition by avoiding duplication of chemical registration information already submitted to EU REACH. The consultation seeks input on: 📅 Improving the restriction and reporting processes. 🙀 Enhancing protections against unnecessary animal testing. 🚛 Understanding trade impacts. The Chemical Industries Association and the Chemical Business Association have both expressed cautious optimism, emphasizing the need for regulatory certainty and a workable solution for UK manufacturers. Eurozone manufacturing momentum ebbs in June as demand deteriorates: Eurozone manufacturing sector activity slipped further into contraction in June as demand slowed in most of the bloc’s largest economies, while conditions improved in the UK. The purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for the eurozone sector fell to 45.8 from 47.3 the previous month, representing the fastest rate of decline seen so far this year as demand weakened and new export orders saw a 28th consecutive monthly drop. So far this year we have supplied in to companies that are developing technologies and manufacturing processes in biotechnology, recycling, hydrogen, nanotechnology, carbon capture, waste to energy and many other niche sectors. The $528M mining services contractor Macmahon Holdings has put in a buyout proposal for $46.7M for contractor DECMIL. Decmil embarks on complex projects across the infrastructure, resources and renewable energy sectors. It has had a challenged past, where it was forced to call in the restructuring experts several years ago because of troublesome contracts, including the Sunraysia Solar Farm project in NSW. It also had to shut its New Zealand operations after losing a Department of Corrections contract. That is behind it, although more recently, dragging on its balance sheet has been the Homeground Gladstone Accommodation Village, a 1392-bed master planned accommodation village for mining workers that has suffered from a decline in occupancy. Once under Macmahon’s ownership, the facility, which is on Decmil’s books for $63m, will be sold. Macmahon has the balance sheet to grow Decmil and enable it to take on more work, including projects in spaces such as the renewable energy sector. It comes after years of mergers and acquisitions talks between mining services providers in Western Australia, as investors shy away from the sector, deterred by its capital intensive nature and in some occasions, volatility, causing share prices to fall despite solid performance in many cases. Macmahon has not been a target because of its 44 per cent ownership by Amman Mineral, the second-largest copper and gold mining company in Indonesia, has looked at other opportunities. Amman bought into Macmahon after CIMIC Group Limited's CPB Contractors, which earlier owned the business, bid for Macmahon. The move thwarted CIMIC’s buyout efforts. https://lnkd.in/gC5msum4
