12,000 tech companies in 3 months? That was the rate of new incorporations in just the second quarter of the year, and has resulted in the sounding of alarms as it represents a slide in new TechCo starts in the UK. The question is whether this simply reflects maturity in the sector, with more advanced technologies coming to market, and (perhaps usefully?) fewer startups that in reality are little more than novel apps.. Interesting reading all the same, and highlights the highly competitive dynamics across international markets:

Splitting off your technology engine seems to be an emerging trend among challenger banks with Engine by Starling being one of the first. This week, German graphene-based chipmaker Black Semiconductor raised €254.4 million ($272.2 million) for its Series A, a large amount but by no means the biggest of its ilk to close this year. In April, Chicago biotech startup Xaira Therapeutics closed a staggering $1 billion Series A, while generative AI company H Company pulled in $220 million for its seed just a few weeks ago. The rounds show that eyewatering amounts can be raised even in this challenging fundraising market. They are also proof that the alphabetical labeling convention for funding rounds has become increasingly meaningless, particularly for early-stage companies, offering a skewed perspective on a startup’s growth journey. The origins of the traditional VC labels—seed, Series A, Series B, etc.—are unclear, but they have been used for decades to provide a clear framework for understanding a startup’s development and funding expectations. But as disparity in deal sizes within stages has grown over the last few years, the lines between the categories have become blurred.

We were asked recently during a due diligence call why we choose to go with a Private Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) rather than working with the robust ecosystems in the public ledger DLT space. Where the public ledgers do have vast communities and development, we found that there are specific advantages to private ledger that are not being utilized, let me explain our thoughts with these points.  Private DLTs offer several advantages over public ledger DLTs, particularly in terms of control, privacy, and efficiency. Here are some key benefits: Enhanced Privacy and Confidentiality: Restricted Access: Only authorized participants can join and transact on the network, which helps maintain data privacy. Confidential Transactions: Sensitive information can be shared selectively with permissioned parties, reducing the risk of data breaches. Better Performance and Scalability: Faster Transactions: With fewer nodes to reach consensus, private DLTs often achieve higher transaction speeds and lower latency compared to public DLTs. Scalability: Private networks can be more easily scaled and optimized for performance, as they are not burdened by the high transaction volumes seen in public networks. Greater Control and Governance: Centralized Management: A consortium or single entity governs the network, allowing for more streamlined decision-making and implementation of updates or changes. Customizable Rules: The network can be tailored to meet specific business needs and regulatory requirements, with custom consensus mechanisms and governance models. Improved Security: Known Participants: Since all participants are vetted and trusted, the risk of malicious actors is significantly reduced. Regulatory Compliance: Easier to enforce and monitor compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, enhancing overall security and trust in the system. Cost Efficiency: Lower Operational Costs: Reduced need for extensive computational resources and lower transaction fees compared to public networks. Energy Efficiency: More energy-efficient consensus mechanisms (e.g., Proof of Authority) can be used instead of energy-intensive ones like Proof of Work. Interoperability and Integration: Business Integration: Easier to integrate with existing enterprise systems and workflows, providing seamless connectivity with internal business processes. Interoperability: Can be designed to interoperate with other private and public DLTs, enabling hybrid solutions that leverage the strengths of both types. In summary, private DLTs offer significant advantages in terms of privacy, performance, control, security, cost efficiency, and business integration, making them an attractive option for enterprises and consortia with specific needs and regulatory requirements like the world of payments, and payment services. This is the core concept we have adopted in our WaaS model payment platform, and why we believe it is the right solution for today's payments sector needs.

The UK accounts for 39% of the daily $7trillion of global FX transactions with NYC being second accounting for 19% of the transactions. Historically it was helpful when Asian FX traders handed over their FX positions to London who then traded and then handed over to USA who then in turn kept trading until they handed back to Asia. Digital currencies can trade 24/7 so the geography and time zone becomes less relevant.... Sarah Green at The Law Commission has done some great work clarifying the legal position around digital assets in English and Welsh law (used to conduct 80% of international trade). Given the $150+billion daily turnover of stablecoins we need banks to be able to offer cash backed stablecoins that generate interest and so unlock the benefits of automated payments and create a more inclusive financial markets. Another huge benificary of having digital payment options such as stablecoins is to help SMEs get paid faster, SMEs which employ 61% of all UK employes. Getting paid faster ought to help improve UK productivity and a faster circulation of money potentially results in more economic growth. Megan Caywood Cooper, former Barclays chief product officer and Starling chief platform officer, has announced her new AI wealthtech Caywood, at Money 20/20 today. Cooper described the startup as wealthtech platform and product that uses AI to provide financial guidance that personalised in real time. She discussed her experience at Barclays and Starling over the last 10 years and what she sees as the next step in digital banking: “If this first phase of digitisation was about automation, making it easier to access what we do. The next phase will be about augmentation, creating better services for customers.” Cooper stated this required a “fundamentally different user experience.” She added: “AI and APIs have matured in a powerful way such that we can now harness this technology to provide customers with real time personalised financial guidance in a way that we were unable to do before.” On a slide, Cooper stated Caywood would include: Smart financial aggregation, Financial summary and budget outlines, Cashflow forecasting/modelling, AI driven financial planning, Smart budgets, Money on autopilot: automatic portfolio management, Tax optimisation, and Open APIs and development platform. One feature Cooper highlighted is tax optimisation.

JP Morgan last week released an AI research chatbot to staff in its asset management division. It appears to be an interface to third-party tools, rather than a tool developed from scratch in house. Called LLM Suite, it was billed to staff as “a research analyst that can offer information, solutions and advice on a topic” according to the FT. It is not clear how the model has been trained or whether it will undergo ongoing fine tuning. Training and fine tuning are what gives the large language model (LLM) technology its power, because they enable the software to be trained on specific datasets and learn from its mistakes.    If LLM Suite is just a way of enabling staff to access ChatGPT without the data security risk, that is one thing. But if it is being fine-tuned, then it has the capacity to develop into something more sophisticated. That could determine whether this is a game changer or not for the job security of the analyst (buy or sell side).
