At the time, it was a pioneering initiative, and I created a partnership with the UK Local Government Association to make it work. It became firmly established as part of the communication and elected member strategy of over 50 UK local authorities for a number of years generating six-figure annual revenues for the company.

The project grew significantly in January 2008 when all 26 local authorities in Northern Ireland were funded to participate in the project by the Department for Finance and Personnel (NI).

The project has consistently been both commercially sustainable and politically necessary. Upon leaving Fused Group in June 2008, I continued developing this project on a freelance basis and made at least one visit to almost every one of Northern Ireland's 26 local councils (and more than one in a number of cases).

By 2002, Poptel was established as one of London's leading web development agencies, specialising in the voluntary and trade union sector. When Poptel was struggling in 2002, the web-development arm was the only remaining profitable sector of the business, and I helped to lead a management buy-out as the rest of the business was broken up.

    The Democratic Society

“Save Democracy – Abolish Voting” sketches out an alternative means of managing liberal democracy.

It is an unusual book, in that it defends the values and reputation of Representative Democracy as vigorously as possible while also promoting a new form of Direct Democracy that could even eventually replace our current parliamentary system.

It is an unusual book, in that it defends the values and reputation of Representative Democracy as vigorously as possible while also promoting a new form of Direct Democracy that could even eventually replace our current parliamentary system.

While rejecting the use of referendums, the book also rejects the argument made by some opponents of referendums about how voters don’t have the intelligence to make big democratic decisions for themselves. Instead, it argues that it is the wise voter who rejecs the selective appeals of politicians who allow us a say on some carefully-chosen questions but not others.

“Save Democracy – Abolish Voting” calls for an equality of control over every aspect of our governance. The book suggests an alternative to balloting – one that makes it practical and possible for us all to have our interests defended and advanced equally.
