What are effective ways to prototype a UI for a global audience?
Words don’t mean the same thing everywhere. There are always local nuances. One thing I’ve found helpful is to work closely with a local human translator for user research facilitation to ensure your candidate feels high trust with the interviewer. As well as assistance writing the research questions to mitigate the risk of insights losing their contextual meaning.

The advertisement company Iris held an event called Arduino Hack Day which is a world wide guerrilla workshop to which you bring your own set of tech tools and creative ideas and collaborate with other developers and engineers to produce new interactive hardwares. Myself, Kate Pincott and Rafael Filomeno worked in a group. We came up with a idea of the midi-shredder which is a mixture between a paper shredder, a music box and a Tamagotchi. It reads the black and white of the paper that is shred and turns it into funny or melodic sound. It generates different sounds depending on the character: monster, bird and heavy metal rocker. It encourages more people to use a shredder, therefore being eco-friendly. It also has a small LCD screen on the chest which displays comments such as “Feed me!” when there is not much paper to be shred or “you have saved 5 trees” which makes you feel a sense of reward.

South By Southwest Talk 2012

The talk was entitled "Hacking SXSW For Smiles & Dorkbot Street Cred" and covered Arduino & Physical Computing with Sky 1 Gadget Geeks.
I organised and ran a one day hack to generate physical computing ideas to answer the brief of making SXSW smile. The winning idea from London College of Communication students Rafael Filomeno, Kate Pincott and Young Kim was a tamagotchi style smart shredder. More details of the student's work is available here:…The talk was entitled "Hacking SXSW For Smiles & Dorkbot Street Cred" and covered Arduino & Physical Computing with Sky 1 Gadget Geeks.
