One of the most successful programs in high school football history is changing head coaches.

Massillon Washington in Ohio has won 22 state titles, nine national championships and is among the top five programs in the nation in victories. The town has played high school football since the late 1800s.

Jason Hall, the head coach since 2008 who led the program to six consecutive playoff berths in seven seasons, won’t be returning, school Superintendent Rik Goodright told The (Canton, Ohio) Repository on Sunday.

Goodright said the decision was mutual and that the program is “heading in a different direction.”

Massillon’s season ended at 7-4 with a first-round Division II playoff loss Friday. Perrysburg, the top seed and playing the first postseason home game in school history, dominated Massillon 56-7, the program’s worst loss since a 68-0 shutout by Steubenville Wells in 1931.

Goodright left the playoff game near the end of the third quarter.

“I left because I knew difficult decisions would have to be made in the next 24 hours and I didn’t want people impacting those,” Goodright said. “When you make a decision like this, you look at the whole body of work, but Friday night didn’t help that matter. We got beat by a very good team. This is still Massillon football, and that was a new experience for Massillon football.”

After the game, Hall said, “Nothing went right. You have to tip your hat to them.”

Hall finished with a record of 57-26.

Goodright said a small committee will be assembled to find a new coach.

“I still believe the Massillon coaching job is one of the best in Ohio,” Goodright said. “I believe it’s the Browns, Bengals, Buckeyes and Massillon’s football coach.”

Hall’s contract as head coach and athletic director runs through 2017. He could be re-assigned to another position.
