California water polo player hospitalized after being found at bottom of pool

A 16-year-old water polo player from Nogales High School in California was in critical condition after he was found at the bottom of the pool after having an epileptic seizure, officials said, according to KTLA in Los Angeles.

Paramedics transported Alejandro Camacho from the pool to the football field at Don Lugo High, where he was airlifted to the hospital. Fire officials later said Camacho was breathing on his own and expected to survive.

The team was practicing when the team noticed a player missing, according to Battalion Chief Scott Atkinson with Chino Valley Fire District. Camacho’s father jumped into the pool to rescue him.

“The other team had scored so we were lining up to keep going … when everybody noticed we were still down a player,” Marcos Garcia, the coach for Nogales High School, told KTLA.

Nogales was playing a CIF first-round match against Don Lugo.
