Jeromy Davidson has a number of responsibilities as principal and athletic director at Westview High School in Martin, Tenn.

He didn’t mind another item being added to his agenda Wednesday when the Chargers’ fieldhouse hosted a famous visitor for a workout. That famous visitor was Heisman Trophy winner and two-time BCS football champion Tim Tebow., who played at the University of Florida and in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets.

“He was coming in for a speaking event that night in Martin, and Randy Ricketts, who was pretty much the guy in charge of getting Tebow from Point A to Point B all day, called me earlier in the week asking if he could work out at the fieldhouse,” Davidson said. “It took me about a half a second before I said yes he could.”

The original plan was for Tebow to get some work in late in the morning and be out of the fieldhouse by the time the football team got there for spring workouts.

“But he’s a busy man and had a conference call and a few other things that pushed his schedule back, so he didn’t get there until right before noon,” Davidson said.

The first part of Tebow’s workout was on the baseball field at the park adjacent to Westview’s campus. Davidson got a few balls for Tebow to use, and word about Tebow’s presence began to spread a little bit.

“He was in the park, and there were other people there,” Davidson said. “But he was gracious and humble the whole time and took pictures with a few people. He even took one with me even though I try not to be that guy in that situation a lot.”

But Davidson did get to be “that guy,” which included playing catch with Tebow for a little while.

“There aren’t many people around here who can say they’ve played catch with a  Hesiman Trophy winner, a two-time national champion and a quarterback who’s led an NFL team to a playoff win,” Davidson said. “But I can.”

Tebow was still there when the football players arrived that afternoon. Davidson said he offered a couple of options for him to slip out.

“He wouldn’t have any of that,” Davidson said. “He walked into the locker room, and usually the most talkative bunch of kids in our school were awe struck and speechless when they found out who’d just walked in.”

Tebow’s presence in Martin wasn’t publicized as he was there for a private event benefiting Agape House, a place for counseling and medical care for mothers in Weakley County. So the surprise was a bit of a shock for the players.

“I told somebody yesterday that one of the players thought we were about to announce Tim Tebow as our new head football coach,” Davidson said. “But I don’t think a new coach would meet his new team in a sleeveless T-shirt, hat and shorts.”

On the subject of the next football coach, Davidson said he will begin work next week finding the coach to fill in for Don Coady, who announced his resignation last week after 25 years coaching the Chargers.
