Global Box Office: ‘Inside Out 2’ Passes ‘Minions’ as Fifth Highest-Grossing Animated Film, ‘Despicable Me 4’ Nears $230 Million

It was a big weekend globally for animated movies as Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” cleaned up at the international box office.

“Inside Out 2,” already the biggest hit of 2024, continued to climb up the list of all-time animated releases, passing “Minions” to become the fifth highest-grossing film in the genre with its $1.22 billion global haul. Over the weekend, “Inside Out 2” earned $78.3 million from 45 major markets.

Running slightly behind, “Despicable Me 4” earned an impressive $73 million over the weekend across 73 markets. That pushes the Universal and Illumination film’s foreign grosses to $106.9 million and its worldwide haul to $229.5 million.

In the U.S., the animated sequel, which sees Steve Carell return as Gru, and pits him against his “Anchorman” co-star Will Ferrell, playing a French supervillain, topped the Fourth of July box office, earning $122.6 million stateside. Looking around the world, it also played well in Mexico, where it opened to $12.6 million, as well as Brazil ($5.9 million), Spain ($5.7 million), the Netherlands ($2.6 million), Indonesia ($2.6 million) and Poland ($2.5 million). Universal said that the film is performing roughly in line with “Despicable Me 3” and just off of the foreign results for “Minions.”

It wasn’t just family films making a killing. Paramount’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” added $21.4 million from 67 territories, including eight new territories, bringing its international total to $83.8 million. Globally, the horror prequel has earned $178.2 million. This weekend also saw Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” earn $8.2 million in 66 overseas markets, pushing its overseas total to $182.8 million and its global grosses to $360.2 million.
