Janko Roettgers is Variety’s first-ever technology writer in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he covers big tech companies like Apple, Facebook, Google and Twitter, as well as emerging technologies like VR, AR and smart devices. Prior to joining Variety in 2015, he worked as a senior writer for tech blog Gigaom. Before that, he was a freelance correspondent for a number of European media organizations, including Frankfurter Rundschau, Berliner Zeitung, ORF, ZDF, Deutschlandradio, heise.de and others. Roettgers has written 3 books on cord cutting and online music, and co-edited an anthology on internet subcultures.
