Wang’s “The Farewell” wouldn’t be seen as a blockbuster at the box office, earning just $22.5 million worldwide, but it managed to score the biggest per-theater average gross of 2019, besting “Avengers: Endgame,” despite most of the dialogue being in Mandarin. And the semi-autobiographical film — about a young woman returning to her Chinese homeland to say goodbye to a grandmother being kept in the dark about the cancer that’s killing her — was an artistic triumph, earning star Awkwafina a Golden Globe Award and notching Wang as a filmmaker to watch. Next, she is set to write and exec produce Amazon series “The Expatriates” — with Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films — and helm a reimagining of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s 2013 family drama “Like Father, Like Son.”
