Wang’s “The Farewell” wouldn’t be seen as a blockbuster at the box office, earning just $22.5 million worldwide, but it managed to score the biggest per-theater average gross of 2019, besting “Avengers: Endgame,” despite most of the dialogue being in Mandarin.
